  • More than 100,000 travellers have seen their flight plans thrown into disarray as WestJet works to restore service from the long weekend strike, but the airline is warning that disruptions could stretch on for days.
The Calgary-based air carrier confirmed in a release Tuesday that a total of 1,137 flights have so far been cancelled before, during or after the long weekend strike that saw WestJet maintenance engineers take to the picket line. In a statement on Monday, WestJet warned that it will take time to get back up to full operations.
"Instead of WestJet having an adequate strike notice to draw down their schedule in an orderly way, it happened in the most chaotic of circumstances," explained former Air Canada executive Duncan Dee, who added that normally airlines have time to wind down operations before a strike happens.
Global's Katherine Dornian reports on the after-effects of the strike, and why it caused so much chaos.

What is the next step if you recieved email like this - Upon review of your reservation, we are unable to approve your claim for compensation as the most significant reason for your flight interruption was due to an operational delay as a result of upline unplanned aircraft maintenance and was outside of WestJet’s control.

WestJet has done everything possible the past few years to NOT have to give any compensation. All they have to say is that the reason for cancellation was “outside of their control”, and then your claim for compensation gets denied. It’s ridiculous

WestJet has fallen so much in 10 years. Went from one of the best companies in Canada to literally one of the worst.

one of the best? i guess we used to have and still have very low standard. compared our airlines to the asian airlines and middle east airlines. ours are bad that words cannot describe.

@@MrBobbyBrown2006 one of the best in canada? hahaha. i guess we have to set our expectation to VERY VERY VERY low then. hahaha. in canada, we have alot of smaller airlines, the only 2 that we compare normally are air canada and west jet.
they can only compete for the worse, not competing for who is better. hahahah

Not sure what kind of engineers these are on strike but I have never ever heard of an engineering being a member of a union. This too is a bit questionable from an ethical standpoint.

It is highly detestable that so many different unions take turns going on strike and disrupt normal travelling, causing so much undue hardship to so many passengers. Once binding arbitration is declared, no strike action should be taken. To begin any strike action, 14 days’ notice should be given to all passengers who have booked onto flights
