War Thunder is a free-to-play multiplayer air, land and naval combat simulation video game primarily featuring vehicles from World War II, the Cold War to contemporary wars. Developed and published by Hungarian studio1 Gaijin Entertainment. Announced in 2011, War Thunder was first released in open beta in November 2012 before becoming available worldwide on PC on August 13, 2013, on PlayStation 4 on November 29, 2013 and on Xbox One on June 19, 2018.
War Thunder allows the player to control a vehicle (plane, tank, ship or helicopter) in battles involving two teams of up to 16 players on a map for control of objectives (or up to two teams of 32 in some missions in World War mode). Three different game modes - arcade, realistic and simulator - with increasing difficulty are available, as well as a panel of 2,500 vehicles from 10 different nationalities.
War Thunder received several awards upon its release, such as the Best Simulation Game award at Gamescom 2013. The game also holds two official world records from the Guinness Book of Records, for having "the greatest number of planes in a flight simulator”3 and to have “the most players online simultaneously on a flight simulator”4. In 2019, War Thunder is one of the most played games on Steam with an average of more than 25,000 players simultaneously5.
