- We are joined Dr. Adel Eksharkawy, a Canadian physician based in Calgary, Alberta.
Dr. Elsharkawy tells us about his experience working at Gaza’s only functioning neonatal unit, at the Emirati maternity hospital in Rafah.
A specialist in the care of newborns, he recently returned from two weeks in Gaza as part of a delegation organized by Glia, a medical aid organization that provides care and medical equipment for vulnerable and conflict-torn populations all over the world.

If there is one silver lining in this situation its the number of times I'm presented with stories of real heroism and immesurable human kindness. Doctors like Adel are the people that future generations will look up to in the future.
I remember hearing about a surge of Palestinians donating blood in the early days of the bombardment and it makes you understand what grat people we are losing with every airstrike.

There isn't anything more vulnerable than a tiny preemie. Their care is very specific and there's no room for less than accurate care at 3 pounds. A matter of minutes seperates life from death, any power interruption can be fatal. How can anyone deprive these infants from a chance? The "pro life" American Christians should be especially ashamed.

Dear Dr. Elsharkawy thank you for updating on this profoundly heartbreaking situation. Re breast milk- I am aware of the millions of breast milk banks exist globally, and that some centres, in Brazil are reconstituting donated breast milk in dehydrated form. Is it feasible, possible to access this dehydrated breast milk to newborns in Gaza? I realize that lack of clean water may obviate this possibility. If you are able, can you please comment - thank you
Dehydrated human milk can, in fact, be an excellent solution and, since these tiny babies have very few ml, I think that if there was a possibility of milk getting in, natural bottled spring water could also get in...better than artificial milk...
May God protect these little ones and all the health professionals who try to save them, as well as their suffering mothers...
