- Published on Mar 10, 2026
- Your cat is watching you. Constantly.
But what your cat sees when they look at you is far more complex than most people realize.
In this science-based video about how cats see humans, we dive deep into cat psychology and cat behavior explained to uncover what your cat truly thinks about you. Using real scientific studies on feline psychology, we explain how cats perceive humans, why your cat observes your actions, and how they silently evaluate you every single day.
This video reveals what your cat thinks about you, why many cats see their owners as a secure base, and how the emotional bond between cats and humans is built on safety, trust, and familiarity - not just food.
Using real research on cat behavior, you’ll finally understand what it really means when your cat:
- Ignores you on purpose
- Follows you from room to room
- Kneads on you
- Stares at you without blinking
If you’ve ever wondered:
- What does my cat think about me?
- Does my cat love me or just tolerate me?
- Why does my cat watch me so closely?
This deep dive into how cats see humans will completely change the way you understand your cat.
In this video, you’ll learn:
• Why cats “judge” human behavior
• The Secure Base Effect in cats
• Why cats ignore their owners on purpose
• How cats read human emotions
• The real meaning behind purring and kneading
This is not guesswork. It’s science-based insight into cat psychology, showing why your presence matters more to your cat than food alone - and why your cat sees you as safety.
👉 If you want to truly understand your cat’s mind, you’re in the right place.

I had stage 3 cancer, my cat stayed right by my side physically touching me for 6 months, all throughout my chemo/radiation, once I got better she went back to mostly ignoring me, good kitty.
I read once that the frequency of their purring is a healing frequency. I’m glad to hear you are doing better ❤
Thank U for sharing this. Many people underestimate how sensitive cats are to changes in our body and behavior. She likely sensed something was different and chose proximity as protection. When things returned to normal, she did too. That quiet loyalty says more than constant attention ever could.🤗💕💕💕😻
Now that is a nice one! I have my own opinion of cats, and get greeted with a miaow when I wheel my bike past a neighbours cat on our walkway, I miaow back just to acknowledge it, I touched it in a gentle stroke, but it did not like that, so I'll just pass quietly in future, it is a comical little thing.
@jenniferglenn14thank you
Anytime I’ve ever felt under the weather one of my cats has always stayed with me beyond what they would typically do. Cats really do sense discomfort and when we need some extra attention
The domestication of humans by cats is a miracle.
We thought we domesticated cats. Cats think otherwise.😅🤣🤣🤣😼
Human: "Oh, how cuuuute!" - Cat: "Feed me, or I will kill you, Schweinebacke." 🤗
Love this comment! ❤
@judyplatz2885 I presume we both love cats. Rudyard Kipling has a great story: The Cat That Walked By Himself. K. knew a thing or two about cats.
Marvellous what they can do isn't it.😂
I had a brain injury from a car crash. My daughter brought home a kitten. It adopted me and saved my life. 10 years later, we are still inseparable.
🙏🙏🙏Reading this honestly gave me chills. The idea that a small kitten could become such a strong emotional anchor over ten years is really moving. Sounds like U both saved each other.😻🤗💗
That's awesome
Details. I need them.
God sent you a caregiver!,🐱❤️
Cats don't like everybody, but I've never met a cat who didn't like somebody.
That’s actually beautifully said. Cats can be very selective, but once they choose their person, the bond is incredibly strong.
True
I have! I've met a cats that I swear was possessed by Satan
Oh, I have. Sister's cat won't permit anyone in its personal space, about 1 foot radius. Any thing entering that space will be attacked. No interest at all in humans except for food, water, and shelter.
@MalachiWhite-tw7hlhow is this cat with your sister, though? Does it show affection towards her?
My cat always looks at me like she thinks I'm about to ask her for a ride to the airport.
Cats really master the art of giving us the most suspicious looks. Maybe she’s just double checking U aren’t about to change her routine.😼💗💗💗
Mine can take the damn car if he has gas money
😂😂😂😂 i am dying!!! 💯
Cute
😂😂😂😂
Dogs: Wow these huge things feed me, love me, shelter me and take care of me, they must be gods.
Cats: Wow, these huge things feed me, love me, shelter me and take care of me, I must be a god.
Haha that sums up the attitude perfectly. But deeply down as the Secure Base test proved they rely on U for emotional regulation. They act like royalty but in reality they view U as their biological anchor in a scary world.😂😁💕💕💕😻🤗
@Meowtopia-k8z I know my cat loves me. I don't know where I read that but I thought it was funny.
@PaulTheSkepticYou've probably read it or heard it in multiple places, it's become a meme. 😛
Nope. My cat realises I don't have to feed her, it's a choice that I make, so she nudges me a little thank you before eating.
Cats appreciate you and the like autonomy but they are well aware they are not in charge.
@deborahcurtis1385 It's only a joke.
If you break down and cry, cats that normally are jumping and playing will sit still and look at you. They don't know why its happening but they clearly get the gravity of the moment.
U are absolutely right. As mentioned in chapter 6 they act as Emotional Mirrors. When U break down their energy shifts to match yours because they are attuned to ur frequency. It proves they are not indifferent but deeply connected to how U feel.😿😺
My kitty would come and comfort me the couple of times she really saw me weeping. She literally climbed up on me and put her little paw on my heart. And then she licked up my tears. She was the best comforter I could have imagined.
Fun Fact the narrator is a Cat all along
Shhh! U weren't supposed to tell everyone! I was hoping to keep it a secret a little longer.😂😂😂😂😂😹😹😹😹😹
@Meowtopia-k8zno way!
we're the cats too
@Otmennaya12 And we serve cat.
My cat ignores me no matter when I call her. But as soon as she hears a can of food being opened, she comes running from a thousand miles away!😹
Haha classic selective hearing. She definitely processed the data like we discussed and decided the can was worth moving for while ur voice just means safety so she can stay put.😅😺💕💕💕
They'll eat you if you die alone.
I guess it depends on the cat. Mine is the opposite. When I call him, he comes to chill with me. Sometimes when I think he's hungry, he doesn't eat and just comes back to chill. When hungry, he jumps on the cabinet and stares at me
My cats do a cost benefit analysis of not coming in at dusk when I call them. They know that if they decide to stay out then I won't let them in if they come back at 3am, they will be out all night. Then when I finally do let them in they won't get any food, water yes food no. They also have to factor in being told off which happens immediately and then intermittently thorough out the day. By evening they will get food but not their favourite and not as much as they'd like. The compliant cat sits smugly getting the proper food and attention.
So now they will go out and meet their friends and come in at say 9pm. Not an overnighter as such. Very clever animals. I believe they understand a lot of what I say and they act guiltily when I reprimand them. I withhold affection for about 3 days after they do an overnighter.
It's been months since they have failed to come inside. Being told off really hurts their feelings.
Mine are rescues and they feel the call of the wild from that. I let them outside because they are simply far happier and more stimulated that way. The arrangement with the birds is they have morning in the garden, at about 10am the cats are let out. Shrill warnings fill the air of the birds, then the birds have a few hours before dark to themselves. This seems to be working. The birds eat from my pear tree and grape vine. They're very intelligent too.
We adopted a cat years ago - it would only come back home when it was ready or if you shook a box of dried catfood ( the dried food was only a bribe, it had proper food normally, like chicken necks cooked in pressure cooker to soften the bones, great source of calcium )
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
It feels that way sometimes, but the truth is more interesting. Staff don’t get followed, checked on, or slept next to. Cats stick close because there’s a bond, not just benefits.🤗😻💕💕💕
correction: cats have friends.
"nobody owns a cat, but I suppose you can consider me on long-term loan."
-Garfield.
@Meowtopia-k8z You don't insist staff go for a walk with you - one of our cats does that, we often follow each other on the nearby country path
@Viper-fd2fx Friends with food, rent-free accommodation and health care benefits😉😼
@Meowtopia-k8z Well, I did have a job once that... 🤔 Ah, nevermind, I suppose that was a little weird now that I think about it...
My cat thinks I'm her pet and my training is coming along well😊
Many cats definitely behave like we are the ones being trained. From their perspective, if you respond consistently, the system is working perfectly.😅😁😼
My dearly departed Gab was my buddy. Always loved hanging out with me either in my lap or next to me. He'd nap at my feet or next to me when I laid down. He was always close, but never a nuisance or got in the way. He just wanted to hang out and get pets, but he'd never "demand" them. He'd politely touch me with his paw as if to say, "pet me, please?". He was the sweetest boy and I miss him every day
Gab sounds incredibly special. Wanting to be near U without demanding attention shows a deep, secure bond. Cats like that don’t just love, they understand. The way U describe him, it’s obvious he chose U as his person, and that kind of connection stays with U forever.🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
I’m sorry for the loss of your dear kitty Gab. I hope you find some comfort in the loving memories you two shared together.
My cat would invade my room and claim the bed as hers. When I get up to prepare for work, she'd scream and yowl for me to come back for snuggles.
It was a ritual we had, eventually she'd go and run off to other rooms after a while.
When we lost her due to illness, those first few weeks were so silent for me. I almost hated waking up and knowing she and I wouldn't have our little "game" anymore.
❤❤❤
My Pimousse too. I had many cats over we the years but with some we share very special bonds. I miss him every single day 😢
My cat see's me as his butler, heating pad , chef , masseur.....😂
Pretty accurate summary of cat ownership. We think we adopted them, but really we just applied for multiple positions.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you want to receive unconditional love, get a dog.
If you want to give unconditional love, get a cat.
That’s actually a beautiful way to put it. Dogs often show love outwardly, while cats make us slow down and learn their language, which can feel just as deep in a different way.🤗😺🐶💕
an underrated comment
My last cat, I got both. I've been very sick and almost housebound for about 23 years now and she was with me for about 20 of that time. She was in physical contact with me for easily 80% of that time. She'd sleep with me, lay with me, watch TV with me and even go outside with me and ride on my quad or walk on the leash. She went to her grave without me ever once hearing what she sounded like in anger. She never bit, scratched or hissed at me ever. *ever*. Not once, not kind of, not at all. Her message for "I have had enough now, put me down because I'm mad" was she'd lick her lips exactly three times in rapid succession. But, I also loved her more than anything or anyone I've ever loved before and she returned that in spades. Even when she nearly died when she had surgery and her stitches burst a month later (I promise you, it was worse than it sounds. Ugh) and was in agony, I held her together in my arms in pieces and she didn't lash out. Sometimes they really do give you unconditional love. And it really was her that decided our relationship was going to be like that. I just reciprocated because it was so obviously special. I miss her dearly.
that made me tear up because I lost my soulmate cat over two years ago. I can't even think about him without overwhelming grief. I loved him no matter what, even when he was so sick he peed on me. I would give anything to have him back and well again.
Correction
If you want to receive unconditional love, get a dog.
If you want to give unconditional love, get a dog or a cat.
My cat sees me as her primary food giver and for that she lets me live in her house.
Fair deal honestly. Food provider status unlocked, lifetime residency approved.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😼😁
My cat comes to me when I’m sad or in pain, and she bumps her head to my shoulder and cuddles with me until I feel better.
That’s a beautiful sign of emotional awareness. Cats are incredibly good at reading changes in our body language, voice, and energy. Coming to U, head bumping, and staying close until U feel better shows a strong bond and real empathy.🤗💕💕💕😻
My cat is that way too, he's affectionate, he comes up to me and leans against me purring several times a day
She's playing you
@Meowtopia-k8z❤❤❤
My cat, a Russian blue, comes when you call her name, all the way from another room or from 200 yards away in the yard.
That makes perfect sense for a Russian Blue! They are known for being incredibly intelligent and forming very strong bonds with their 'person.' Your cat isn't just responding to her name; she's responding to your call because she sees U as the center of her world. 🤗😻💕💕💕
Someone dumped a kitten in my garage last Summer, l fed and played with him. Next morning l came to the garage and started calling if he was still there, l suddenly heard a faint meow way off in the distance. The meows grew louder as he got closer until he burst through the weeds, been m6 cat since.
That’s a powerful story. He didn’t just recognize your voice, he trusted it. Coming toward a call from a distance means he had already associated U with safety and care. That’s often how cats choose their human, quietly and decisively.🤗😻
Our precious Torti was found in our yard (assuming she was feral) looked to be 2 months old. She is so good, comes when we call her name. So far 10 years of love
@sashasue00 Feral cats are awesome.
My last Cat, Budha was with me 23 years and I miss him so much , I feel he truly loved me, such a loving little tuxedo kitty
I know how it hurts, but 23 years ! You must have taken really good care of him, and don´t forget, he may have left this life, but he is still an immortal soul. He will remember you with love. just as you remember him.
The way you describe him makes it clear he felt safe and connected with you, and that’s something that stays long after they’re gone.🙏🙏🙏💗
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@Meowtopia-k8zabsolute 💯
I had a black Buddha. He’s been waiting for me at the rainbow bridge for about two years. I’m looking forward to that meeting.
I know it sounds weird but my cat and I are so close we understand each other's language, almost like we're having a conversation. I know what she is telling me when she does something specific and she understands me in the same way. We are very very close, we found each other at a time in our lives when we both really needed someone more than anything else so we've become each others emotional rock. In the 4 years we've been together I have never heard her hiss a single time and she has never scratched me out of malice. I work at home so I'm here most of the time and she is always somewhere close to me in one of her designated spots if she's not in my lap asleep or right in my face or making biscuits on my chest. I have never been around a more precious kind cat in my life and she's the 4th one in my family, they don't see her often but she's just as kind and loving with them too. The kind of love she shows me I will defend with my life.
That doesn’t sound weird at all. When U spend so much time together, a real silent language starts to develop through routines, body language and trust. What U describe sounds like a very deep secure bond, and honestly those connections can be life-changing.🤗😻💕💕💕👍
I had the same with our boy who passed away. We could literally exchange a look and understand each other. He was a cat with very specific needs (I jokingly called him autistic) but he was my buddy. I still miss him :(
Same here❤😊❤
My cat too ❤
That sounds like a familiar or a gift from Freya.
My kitty rarely "makes biscuits." What she does do is scratch and "dig" at my open shirt until she manages to get her whole body inside it with me.
That is even more intimate than making biscuits. She is basically treating U like a kangaroo pouch. By burying herself inside ur shirt she is getting the ultimate Secure Base effect we talked about where she feels 100 percent protected by ur scent and warmth.🤗😻💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
100% my Maine coon with any human female. He got more game than me
😮😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When ever there are fireworks, I head into the bedroom and call the cats on the bed. I turn up the TV a bit and we sit on the bed and watch TV. They don't crawl under the bed. Yes, I see them watching my face to see if I'm afraid. No fear and they stay calm.
That is a textbook example of the Social Referencing we discussed in chapter 4. U proved that they look at ur face to process the data. Since U remained calm they knew the loud noises were not a threat to the colony.👍😺🐱
Yes mine respond to my reassuring tones, as well as what you do. It's very sweet seeing them deepen their trust.
Every bonfire night I spend the night curled up on the kitchen floor with my cats and my dog
Interesting, in the case of fireworks my cats always flee to the garden, even if the sound is coming from there.
we have encountered the opposite, when the doorbell goes, we jump up and act immediately.
both our maine coons have learned to dash and hunker down when it happens, just because we act strongly.
My cat did pest control for me. I gave her food because I wanted her to stick around. She was a feral cat. No clue what to expect from a human. The first thing she noticed was the air conditioner. Then she found out about the brush, finally the bath... That means "no more fleas."
Next thing you know she was sitting on my lap and purring.
Then, for reasons I can't explain..... she decided to chase off a pair of raccoons. Went from being a fluffy, well groomed "people cat" to the scariest alley cat you can ever imagine. All fine and good, except that a raccoon is not going to be intimidated by a four pound cat. She must have known that I am an impossibly large and very capable predator, and I was right behind her.
That is the perfect real life example of the Secure Base Effect we discussed in chapter 2. She launched that attack on the raccoons because she knew her Super Provider was right behind her backing her up. Her bravery was completely tethered to ur presence.😼👍🤗
I've been feeding a feral cat for 3 years. She has just started meowing at me and making biscuits while I talk to her. This is all while I'm leaving her for on the front porch. She still won't let me touch her.
Me too!,I"ve been feeding a beautiful,Tuxedo cat for at least 5 years.I know at one time, she was spayed(ear is clipped)I bought her a converted,Igloo cooler where she lives. Its very cold out right now,I change the straw and feed her quality food. She"s a great cat that doesn"t want to be indoors.
Your last sentence says it all: "She's a great cat that doesn't want to be indoors." That is love in its purest form-respecting who she is, instead of trying to force her to be something she's not. The converted Igloo cooler idea is brilliant 👍
The 'biscuits' from a distance are her love letters to U. It's her way of saying, "I trust U and I feel safe here," even if her instincts still tell her to keep her distance. U have built an incredible bridge of trust with her, one step at a time. You're doing a beautiful job.🤗😉👍💕🐱
My neighbor moved and left her long hair marbled cat. She would come to me for food but would not come in for a year, when she did it was complete. She sleeps on my chest. I let her out when she wants, usually once a day now
Im honored.
Ty for feeding her!!!! You’re a saint ❤
My cats don't seem to care if I fart... my husband leaves the room. I like my cats.
That is true love. As we mentioned in the video cats live in a world of scent so the fact that they stay put means they accept U completely smells and all. They definitely pass the Secure Base test better than ur husband does.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😻💕💕💕
I had a dog that would get off my lap if I farted.
You cats think you smell like prey.
OH well, the cat cares.
but she is polite.
People keep saying cats don't meow at each other in the wild, and I've seen them do it hundreds of times. Absolute nonsense.
While science confirms meowing is a behavior cats have primarily adapted to communicate with humans, there are certainly situations, like fights or mating calls, where they use it with each other too.🙏🙏🙏
I have discovered that some of this happens because of the confusion about certain types of meowing. Like you, I've observed cats meowing to each other a LOT. And of course they YOWL at each other. But, so far, I've not observed them "trilling" at each other. Have you?
It's cute that you think you've seen cats in the wild.
@SHUTUPANDRECORD Feral colonies.
@J.J.C.JR.Sorry, but feral domestic cats are not wild. Not opinion here.
I have never believed cats think we are just big, weird cats. That would imply that they can't differentiate between species, which is just bizarre and silly. If they know a mouse, bird or dog isn't a cat, then obviously they know we aren't. Imagine a solitary hunter negotiating life and being unable to recognise the difference between food, threat , possible mate and thing of no interest. I'm glad to hear that idea has finally been dropped. I believe we occupy a unique position in the thought processes of socialised cats, a kind of blend of honorary family member and personal resource. I know my cat regards me 'hers', she will show annoyance and agitation if she thinks i'm paying too much attention to anyone else.
That blend of family and resource is spot on. Since they view U as their Secure Base it makes sense she gets agitated when U pay attention to others. She is guarding her most valuable asset and ensuring her position in the colony remains secure.🤗😼💕💕💕
This. I've been saying this for years. If they know a dog roughly their size and shape isn't a cat then they obviously twig that the big pink bumbly fridge-operator isn't a cat.
My cat snores … cutest thing ever… always sleeps within arms reach.
Tiny snores are dangerously adorable. Sleeping that close usually means strong trust and a real sense of connection.😻💕💕💕🤗
My cat looks at me with the most loving eyes. His eyes always follow me wherever I go, and most of the time he stays in the same room as me. He adores me as much as I adore him. We are each other's world, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
That’s honestly beautiful to read. When a cat watches U like that and chooses to stay near, it’s usually a quiet but very strong sign of deep attachment.🤗🙏🙏🙏😻💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
About 6 years ago I had lost my job of 21 years and was feeling really down in the dumps. One morning I woke up to find my cat's favorite toy next to me on my bed. I'm convinced she was trying to cheer me up and it worked.
Moments like this show how deep the human-cat relationship can be. Whether intentional or instinctive, many cats react when their person feels low, using familiar objects or routines to reconnect and create emotional safety.🤗😻💕💕💕
holy crap this almost had me in tears. i basically, instinctively knew everything this video shared, when i was like 14. i could never explain why my cat was so in tune with me and nobody else at home. she'd outright attack my brothers and hid from my mom. but whenever i had a shit day at school she'd cozy right up with me as if she knew i needed it. miss her 🥲
I miss my cat too. He was with me through a lot of bad shit in my life. It killed me having to say goodbye to him.
🙏
U were undeniably her Secure Base. She attacked the others because to her they were threats but U were her safety. She literally smelled your stress hormones and came to heal U. U were her person.🙏🙏🙏😢💕💕💕
It hurts so much because the bond was so real. He did his job perfectly by guarding U when U were vulnerable. U gave him a life where he felt safe enough to protect U in return.😢💕😻🙏🙏🙏
Our cat becomes anxious when we leave the house because she knows how helpless we are. No fangs, no claws, no situational awareness, poor hearing and smell, slow, clumsy, poor balance and reaction time. Even a rattle snake could do us in because we would step on it. She is amazed when we return safe and sound. She spends a good part of the night guarding us.
That made me laugh. In their minds we probably look like slow, defenseless giants who clearly need supervision, and the night patrol is just part of the job.🤣🤣🤣😸
I lived on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania for years. People were always dropping off or trying to drop off unwanted cats at the farm, thinking it was ok to do that. It's NOT. Most farms (of course) already have a big clowder of cats we work to care for and don't need more. If you were thinking of dropping off a cat unannounced at a farm, please don't. It's rude and very sad for the cat, who is thrown into completely alien world amongst other hostile and hungry felines (mostly feral) who are just fighting to survive.
U r absolutely right to speak up. It is incredibly unfair to dump that responsibility on farmers who r already caring for their own clowder. Plus dropping a confused pet into a hostile environment with territorial barn cats is just cruel not kind. I hope people read this and learn.👍🙏🙏🙏
I live a little way up the mountain from a small Spanish town, it´s a narrow track but near me is a place a car can turn around.
I´ve been here 9 years and had a whole succession of abandoned kittens which have enriched my life immeasurably. There´s also a big feral ginger tomcat, after two years I am allowed a little stroke when he is eating, and he´s been coming in the house for a few months now, (it´s winter ...).
@Meowtopia-k8zYeah, it's definitely not right to drop off a housecat onto a farm like that
11:00 - My girl sounds like a pigeon when she does this.
Heart melter. 👽✌️
I know exactly what U mean. Those strange little sounds always feel like their secret language, and yes, total heart melter.🤗💕💕💕💕💕😻
:09 notmy precious ”there’s higher spiritual energy” when she stares me down unlike my other two cats that don’t have that energy to them it’s odd
My kitten is upset when I leave her for longer than necessary...she jumps on me and runs offa few times before coming in for a cuddle and then bites me.
I love this ritual! Basically, she has to 'punish' U first for leaving her, with a bit of drama and a warning bite. Only after she's established that you've learned your lesson can she finally grant U the cuddles.🤗💕💕💕😻
My Bengal boy Charlie never slept on the bed, wasn't really a lap cat except when i got home from work and he'd spend 10 minutes licking my head. But whenever he was sick he would come to me. As soon as he was well again he would strut off as King Charlie ruling his kingdom. And i loved him for it.
Many confident cats keep their independence but still choose their person when they need comfort most, and that’s a very special kind of trust.😺💕🤗
My kitty Lacey runs to my bedroom, jumps on the bed when I pat the cover , while meowing and loves to be lightly brushed and ears,/face gently scratched, then while purring turns toward me and kneads my tummy for 10 minutes, jumps down to drink from the elevated water dish near. SHE DEFINITELY LOVES ME. She follows me around the apt and settles close by to nap, etc. She wakes me each morning so she can 'hunt" as I set peanuts on the railing of the deck where birds fly to quickly snatch them up. She and her sister are fascinated to watch them but are not successful hunters!
That routine sounds absolutely perfect. The kneading proves she is regressing to a kitten because she trusts U so much. Plus I love that morning bird ritual she really has U trained to help her hunt. Lucky cats to have such a caring owner.🤣🤗💕💕💕😻😻
One afternoon after sauna I had a terrible backache. When I sat down one of our cats jumped into my lap, something she had never done before, and stayed there all evening. When she finally jumped down, and I stood up, the pain had gone. Cats are miraculous!
There may actually be a simple explanation for it, but that does not make it any less special. Sometimes the steady warmth of a cat, combined with finally sitting still and relaxing, can ease muscle tension more than we expect. And if U felt or heard her purring, that probably made the whole thing even more soothing. On top of that, cats often notice subtle changes in us before we even fully process them ourselves, so she may have sensed discomfort and responded by staying close longer than usual.🤗😁😻😉💕💕💕
It's not just the food. I've befriended our residential mascot, whom I've never fed. It meows loudly when I visit, and bites in scolding when I've been away too long. This is not an injurious bite, it just states a feeling or makes a point and does not preclude further petting. I was away for several weeks recently and it ignored me when I returned. It's warming up again now that I've been back for a while. I've never fed it, but it has accepted me as a member of its family.
That non injurious bite is a sign of deep trust often linked to Neoteny. Since he does not get food from U he has clearly adopted U as a surrogate family member for social support. It is the ultimate proof that cats want more than just a vending machine.🐱💕💕💕🤗😉
My Cat thinks of me as a giant can opener.
Honestly that’s probably in their top three job titles for us. Giant can opener, heating pad, and personal assistant.😅🤣🤣🤣😼💗
I took in my boy when he was just a skinny stray. He chose me, I said no, he continually returned, I caved. He is such a blessing. We are best friends, brothers, family. I love him to death and I know he loves me. He waits outside on my balcony every day when I come home. What a gift my boy Prince has been. ☺️
Sounds like he knew exactly who his human was from the beginning. Cats choosing us and refusing to give up is honestly one of the most beautiful origin stories.😻💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏
@Meowtopia-k8zyes, so true. It’s been almost 6 months and I can’t imagine life without him now.
My cat lives mostly outside and she will meow very sadly when she wants affection. I don't even have to give her food, she feels better once she gets and pets.
This is exactly the kind of story that proves cats aren’t just looking for food. Choosing affection over eating shows how strong the bond between U really is.🤗💕💕💕😻
MY PHRANI IS 22 AND I KNOW SHE WONT BE HERE MUCH LONGER...I LOVE HER SO MUCH, I DONT KNOW HOW IM GOING TO LIVE WITHOUT HER...ONE THING I DO KNOW, I WONT GET HELP FROM A DOCTOR...THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE...
I’m really sorry, reading this I can feel how much she means to U. The bond with a cat who has been beside U for so many years becomes part of who we are. Try to focus on giving and receiving love in the present moments with her.😻 And even if U feel distant from medical help, I hope U still reach out to someone you trust when emotions get too heavy.🙏💗
Amazing video, thank you. This is a great Hitchhiker's Guide to Cats.
Thank U, seriously. “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Cats” is one of the best compliments I’ve gotten.🙏🙏🙏😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤗🤗🤗I’m really glad U enjoyed it 💖💖💖
My boy has never "made biscuits" on me. I rescued him from someone's backyard. He was not feral. More than likely abandoned. And he was not fixed. I wasn't able to have that done until I had him for 6 years. He did something else I never saw a cat do- I called it blanket "graping"...lol...after getting snipped he almost completely stopped that habit. I could never trust him around a very fuzzy, soft blanket. Those were his favorites....😅😅
Not all cats knead, and not all affection looks the same. His behavior was more about instinct and hormones than emotional bonding. The fact that it stopped after neutering confirms that. Your relationship with him developed in a different, equally valid way.🤗😻💗
I could never love a cat, though no home or venue is complete without one. They're facinating.
Fair enough. Cats have a way of being fascinating observers even for people who don’t feel deeply bonded with them.👍😺💕
This video is incredibly thoughtful and well explained. I love how it uses real science to challenge common myths about cats and shows how deep their bond with humans really is. It made me see my cat’s behavior in a much more meaningful way. Insightful, comforting, and beautifully presented.
Thank U so much for this thoughtful comment.🙏🙏🙏🤗💕💕💕 I’m really glad the science helped U see U r cat’s behavior in a deeper, more meaningful way. That understanding is exactly what I hoped to share.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕💕🤗💗💗💗
Mine claim i am their big brother that is poorly trained but can open cans .
That is a fantastic description! They see U as a work in progress. "He's almost perfect, we just need to train him better... but at least he can open cans, so we'll keep him for now." 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😅This video made me smile!!
We are really happy U enjoyed it.🙏🙏🙏🤗💗💗💗💗💗 Knowing that they manipulate us with that solicitation purr is definitely funny but it also shows just how smart they really are.
My kitties probably wonder about me bumping into stuff in the dark. There is that big clumsy but safe being again, bumping in to the same piece of furniture again. They are the sweetest little creatures. Each so different in personality, appearance and habit. They do both universally acknowledge that I am clumsy. One of my boys has a signs of arthritis, so there are little ladders for him for access. The other is losing his hearing in certain ranges. I know how to communicate as his needs change. This was my promise and I feel blessed to help them through all of 😊aging.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂They are probably thinking I guess evolution forgot to give him whiskers.😸🐱💕💕💕
@Meowtopia-k8z her, but yes, evolution skipped me when it came to night vision
😊
. I am right there with you. I bump into things constantly at night. It is a miracle my pinky toe is still attached. 😂😂😂
Cardboard boxes and discount food - my cats lived well into their late teens.
Proof that sometimes happiness is simple. A safe home, love, and a good cardboard box can go a long way.👍😸💕💕💕😺
(4:50) you just described most animal shelters.
I'll sit with a cat and wait for them to start to relax. Having them wander away from me to do something else has always felt like a win.
U have perfectly described the art of cat-patience. Waiting, with no expectation, until they decide you are safe. Seeing them finally relax and go about their business is the biggest reward.👍
@Meowtopia-k8z Honestly? One of the best moments isn't when a scared cat accepts petting, though, that IS a good one. It's when one wanders away, and eats, and then comes back. Trusting me to watch so they can eat without being attacked.
Exactly. That moment shows true security. The cat isn’t seeking reassurance through contact, it’s confident enough to disengage and meet its needs, knowing you’re not a threat. That’s a quiet but powerful form of trust.🤗💕💕💕😸
@Meowtopia-k8z And sometimes I just sit there and read and the cat never comes out of hiding. Even that builds trust... "see, there are people who you can trust who won't drag you out of hiding".
Freddy just came into the room and gave me a head bump.
He went out and came back and head bumped me again.
He was checking on me.
I'm ok.
He is acting like a true guardian. Returning for a second head bump shows that U are his Secure Base. He needed to physically touch his anchor to lower his anxiety and make sure the colony is stable.😁😻💕💕💕
2:47 I always imagined my cat as viewing me in the same way that a human might view being cared for by a dragon as their pet. Big powerful ancient beast, obsessed with its magical trinkets, drinking and eating poison, and in spite of the infection requiring constant reminders to actually take care of the pet.
😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣The dragon analogy fits perfectly with how cats sometimes see us as powerful but slightly questionable creatures.
i enjoyed this.
but thought i was going to see through the eyes of a cat.... or some kind of scope thing. 👀
Glad U enjoyed it. This one focused more on psychology, but if U are curious there is actually a video dedicated to seeing things from a cat’s perspective, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/y1P39jpb88k/video.html
We do not need science to relate to animals. They reactions are clear and simple. They never lie.
You’re right that animals communicate honestly. The video doesn’t deny that. Its purpose is to help people who don’t yet know how to read those signals. Science isn’t there to replace intuition, but to explain it and make it accessible to everyone.
watching these videos somehow makes me cry. i'm currently holding my cuddled up baby, and since she has recently turned 10 i just constantly dread the day i won't have her. 😪
I understand that feeling more than U think. Loving a cat deeply means knowing one day it will hurt, and that thought can sneak in even during the happiest moments. But right now she’s ten, cuddled up with U, feeling safe and loved. Try to stay in this moment. That’s what she knows. That’s what matters to her.😻🤗😉💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Several years ago, my brother lost his wife, and just a few weeks later, the cat died. He thinks it was because of a broken heart. Based upon what's been said here, I tend to agree.
Cats can build strong bonds with their humans, and sometimes their behavior or health changes after a loss in ways that really make us feel how connected they were.😢😿🙏🙏🙏
6:06 One of my cats follows me everywhere and sleeps with me most of the night (or day if I'm napping) and if I have a migraine here always stays with me until I feel better
Some cats show emotional connection by simply staying present, and sleeping beside U or guarding U when U feel unwell is classic cat behavior linked to bonding and comfort.🐱💖🤗👍
If they aren’t sleeping or getting patted. My three cats are basically a crouching tiger hidden dragon movie.
Sounds like U live with three tiny martial arts masters. Cats really do switch between total relaxation and full stealth mode in seconds, and honestly that contrast is part of what makes them so fascinating.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😺😻😼
I relate to this video! I grew up with cats and instantly accept the view that they view us - their bonded owner - as the source of safety and sustenance. I also accept that they are SO different from dogs. Ignoring us as a sign of them accepting us is an incredible insight!
Thank U so much, I’m really happy the video resonated with U.🙏🙏🙏🤗 U understood the core idea perfectly. Cats don’t show trust the same way dogs do, and sometimes what feels like distance is actually deep comfort. When they ignore U calmly, it often means they feel safe enough to just exist without needing constant reassurance.😁💖😻
I have cats all my life and there has been a strong bond with each of them except one who seemed to live in his own head only.
All of my cats listen to my calls snd “commands”, because they get so much care and love that they do not want me to be upset. It is a mutual agreement of trust, respect and love.
Cats are my soulmates for sure.
That sounds like a beautiful lifelong relationship with cats. When trust and respect are consistent, many cats really do respond more like partners than pets.🤗😺😻
@Meowtopia-k8zindeed my bond is with animals and not humans.
Cats are the only animals that can stare at a blank wall longer than a civil servant can.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍TRUE!!!!!
I have made up songs for my cat Scarlet and sing to her. She thinks I'm a dummy but loves me.
Honestly that sounds like peak cat parenting. They may judge our musical talent silently, but they definitely recognize the love behind it.😻💕💕💕
They are absolutely family. I grew up with cats and dogs, but cats are my absolute favorite. Of them all a kitten my daughter found abandoned when he was still blind and was bottle fed by my wife and daughter, was my absolute love. I called him my heart melter. He responded to his name by eight month old and came running like a dog, but only when I called him.
When he was dying, I spent his last five days nursing him and stayed by his side. I never wept so much in my life. He died in my arms. I still miss him dearly and cry when I remember his wise eyes.
😢The way U describe him shows how deep that bond was, and being with him in his last moments was a gift of love he surely felt.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I absolutely love this, thank you! ❤️
That means a lot to hear, thank U.🙏🙏🙏🤗💕💕💕😻😁 Always happy when something connects with real cat lovers.
I so agree with this. My cat relies on me for emotional security. I got him as a senior and he's quite attached. Sadly though, I don't think he loves me.
Sometimes love from a cat doesn’t look like what we expect. Feeling safe enough to attach, stay close, or rely on U emotionally is one of the deepest forms of feline affection. Especially for a senior cat, building that secure bond takes courage, and it sounds like he chose U for a reason.👍😉😺💕
This is so true. If a stranger comes to the door, my cat will stand behind me, and watch my reaction. It there’s a small earthquake (we get a lot of them here), he will run under the bed, but after a few seconds, stick his head out to look at me. If I tell him it’s ok, he will come out. It’s really the highest expression of love and affection that he feels safe with me.
I had 2 black cats that would watch TV with me. If Amazon came up the front steps to leave a PKG, they would both raise their heads, look at the door and growl. It was awesome.
Both U and @barbarapaine8054 have perfectly described how cats look to us as their 'safety benchmark.' Whether it's an earthquake or a delivery driver, their first instinct is to check the threat to protect the pride.
That's what's important, to make sure they feel safe
This was fascinating and explains a lot about my Sasha. Some of this I already knew but this video connects all the dots. Well done, and thank you for producing this video!
I’m really glad it helped make sense of things with Sasha.🙏🙏🙏🤗😻💕💕💕👍 Those “connecting the dots” moments are exactly what I hope for.
My imperious Siamese merely called me, “Foood Laaady!” But she knew she was my baby. And I know she loved me.
Acting like royalty while secretly being deeply attached is basically their personality in a nutshell.😻
That's obviously why my timid friend would never be allowed to stroke my cat. My cat was made nervous by her fear.
Cats read confidence better than words. If someone feels unsure, many cats pick up on that instantly and respond by becoming cautious themselves.
A man who has a dog to adore him must also have a cat to ignore him
Dogs give unconditional love. Cats give selective approval.🤗💕😸🐶
Brilliant stuff. Lost my Bruno 31/10/25 and feel totally heartbroken. Your vid made me smile and remember the beautiful things about my boy
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏It means the world to me that this helped you remember the beautiful things.💕💕💕Bruno clearly knew he was loved and safe with you which is the greatest gift you could have given him.🤗💗😻
My cat has, 'The floor is lava' thing. She will climb all over the furniture to get where she wants to go, rather than just get on the floor and walk there. What's that all about? Also, I was sane three cats ago.
😂😂😂😻 That behavior is actually known as the Feline Superhighway. In the wild being high up means safety from predators and a better vantage point. She is effectively creating her own vertical territory to feel secure while moving around.
Beautiful documentary. Thank you.I miss Yioshi and Fluffy.
Thank U for saying that.🙏🙏🙏💗 I’m sorry U miss them, but it’s clear they had a very special place in your life.😢🙏🙏🙏💕💕
Thank you for this very informative video it helps me understand my precious cats at a deeper level!❤❤ Also I have been watching/ listening to many of the cat 🐈 , dog and horse videos available since I’m retired now and find them all fascinating and enriching! Thank you for your time and effort in producing these and with the supporting research!
Thank U so much.🙏🙏🙏🤗💕💕💕😸 Knowing that they see U as a Secure Base really changes the relationship dynamics. We are honored that U chose to spend ur retirement learning with us about their inner world.🙏🙏🙏💗💗💗💗💗
My cat died 2 yrs ago he could tell when i was stressed and unlike the ones in your video that avoided us. Connor would climb up onto my lap and pur. I think he knew given i am autistic i needed help when stressed. He often slept when i slept as well.
I’m really sorry U lost him.🙏🙏🙏 Reading this honestly feels like Connor wasn’t just a pet but a true emotional partner for U. Some cats don’t avoid stress, they move closer to the person they love most, and it sounds like he really understood U in his own way.
Awe so my cat thinks I’m momma ❤
That is the highest compliment a cat can give. By viewing U as mom they are saying U are their ultimate source of safety and comfort. It means U have successfully become their Secure Base against the world.😻💕🤗
When young I suffered a loss and my cat stayed with me until I fell asleep.
Moments like that show how quietly supportive cats can be when we need it most.🙏🙏🙏😺💗😢
How I see my cat: The undisputed master of this house, who must be obeyed 🙂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😼Classic cat hierarchy. They supervise, we serve, and somehow everyone agrees with the arrangement.
@Meowtopia-k8zI fully agree but I wouldn’t have it any other way 😊
Dogs have owners - Cats have servants .
🤣🤣🤣Somehow we all start as owners and slowly get promoted to full-time staff.
I've known for quite a while that my cats know that we are different.
👍🙏🙏🙏
We had a pregnant mama cat in our household many years ago. Always, even before she was pregnant - she was small, so we didn't think she was ready to breed yet, ha, we were wrong! and in those days we let our cats outside - she would run to the door when we got home from work. She'd found a place to have her kittens, in an upstairs closet, so we fixed a box for her, and she spent a lot of time in there. Anyway, we came home from work one night, and she came to greet us as always, and this time she was meowing even more urgently! We looked more closely, and she had a kitten hanging out of her, half born! We picked her up gently, supporting the kitten (erg) and took her up to her box, where there were already two kittens. She'd interrupted her birth to greet us, but I think more importantly, it being her first (and only) litter, she was letting us know something big was happening, and she needed our reassurance. Once in her box, she got down to business. She had a good sized litter for a new mama, and we kept one of the babies to keep her company.
That story says a lot about trust. Interrupting labor to come find you isn’t random behavior. Especially for a first-time mother, seeking out familiar humans during such a vulnerable moment suggests she saw you as a source of safety and reassurance.🤗😻💕💕💕💕💕
Very helpful and I've had cats for decades
Thank U, that means a lot especially comin🤗🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💖g from someone with so much experience.
My kitty licks his lips every time he sees me:
So it is clear what he is thinking !!
But afterwards when he jumps up on my bed to sleep next to me then it is true love !!
Maybe he’s saying I’m happy U are here… and also maybe dinner time. But jumping on the bed to stay close is one of the clearest signs of affection a cat can show.😻💕💕💕
There is a cat in the neighbourhood who in the summertime sometimes used to come to us. We feed her. And she accepts it. We never force her to come to our palm - it is always her decision to do so. And we caressing her the way that she feels that she may go from us anytime freely. And therefore she many times comes back. I think freedom is very important to cats.
That sounds like mutual respect instead of control. Many cats value freedom deeply, and giving them choice often builds the strongest connection.👍🤗😺
Of course they love us, just as we love them.
That mutual feeling is probably the most beautiful part of living with cats. The bond grows both ways, even if they show it in quieter or more subtle ways than we do.🤗💕😻
My cat always came to me when i called her
Some people think cats don’t come when called, but many do when there’s trust, routine and a strong relationship like U describe.🙏👍
My neighbor's cats must thinks I'm a terrorist because every time I walk outside they'll get up haul ass running away when they are in my yard laying down on my porch or grass
Cats can be funny like that. Fast movements, eye contact or even just routine changes can trigger their escape mode. Give them space and over time they might start watching U instead of running.😉👍
Makes a lot of sense to me. I miss my kitty. She disappeared after I had a stroke😢😢
I’m really sorry U went through that, both the stroke and losing her like that. Cats become such a deep part of our emotional world, and it’s completely normal that U still miss her.😢🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
@Meowtopia-k8zthank you. I’ll see her again. I’m sure. I had her from a kitten.
My cats have all known they have free will until I click my fingers. Zappa, Daveycat, Skypuss and Denzel. If I'm honest Denzel is still learning, he was very unsocialized when he arrived but we're getting there :).
Unsocialized cats take time, and it sounds like U r giving Denzel exactly what he needs. Clear signals, no forcing, and consistency go a long way. The learning curve doesn’t erase his free will, it just gives him structure and safety.👍
@Meowtopia-k8z Indeed.
Sadly we lost Zappa Gingamog many years ago at 23 years of age. His passing made room for Daveycat Headbutt and Skypuss Bumrub who were brothers, all our cats get a nickname and they have all answered to both.
Sadly we lost Skypuss through illness at 16 and his younger brother became very ill and pined away without him :(.
Denzel as you might suspect is black, seven years old and was afraid of his own shadow when he arrived, he'd been in and out of cat homes for most of his seven years so anytime he had maybe made a bond in the past it was soon broken.
Add a dodgy back leg to his problems and his hopes of adoption weren't bright.
We were initially looking for a younger cat but when I bent down to his cage and saw him hide I knew we had to save him because nobody else was likely to.
It took about 3 months to give him his nickname because we hardly saw him during that time, we only knew we had a cat because the food disappeared and the litter tray got used.
We've had him a year and a half now and just as I promised him he would he absolutely loves being stroked.
His full name, Denzel Crazytail and he's curled up right beside me.
Denzel’s journey is a powerful example of what consistency can do. He didn’t need fixing, he needed time and stability. Choosing him when he was hiding was a quiet act of compassion, and it clearly paid off. He finally learned that this bond wasn’t going to disappear.🙏😻💕
Amazing friends.
Absolutely. Quiet, loyal, a little mysterious… and somehow perfect companions.🤗😻💕💕💕
I highly doubt that they scan our micro expressions, they don't see that good apart from motions. Body language yes, but our faces are just a blur to them.
Good observation. They may not read faces like humans do, but they are extremely sensitive to tiny shifts in behavior, tone and energy, which can look like “micro expression reading” from our perspective.👍😉
Are those not just... expressions? But I do agree, whenever I whip out the vacuum my cat is intensely staring at me to see how I behave and if there's danger lol.
I'm a cat mom and this is fascinating. My 2 rescues always seem to know when I feel sick or bad, and always stay close to me (lying on my stomach). Also, as soon as I am on my phone or computer, they insert themselves between me and my device!
I love hearing stories like this.😁 Many cats seek physical contact when they feel their human needs calm or grounding energy. And the “device blocking” is almost a universal cat move, like they are reminding U that real-world interaction comes first.🤗😺💖💖💖
Every cat ive ever owned has been very interactive (dog like). I think its the owners that make cats seem distant and aloof
There’s definitely some truth in that. The way humans interact with cats often shapes how confident and social they become over time.👍😻🤗💖
Maybe. I've had two cats our first was so everything 💗 so close. Our cat now is a loving feisty girl. She's finicky and at times aloof but at night she comes to sleep on our bed
I have a cat named Peggy I've had her for 10 years and she is extremely happy especially when I knock on her lower back she just loves that she wants me to do it every day all the time
When a cat keeps asking for touch in that exact spot, it usually means she associates U with comfort and pleasure. That area stimulates a lot of nerve endings, so it can feel amazing for them. The fact that she actively seeks it from U shows deep trust.😻💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕😉
What? We're not giant cats to them? Oh well, I guess I'll put my costume away then.
I mean… if it helps with bonding, maybe keep it just in case. Cats appreciate commitment to the role.🤣🤣🤣🙏😻
@Meowtopia-k8z 😆😅🤣
...
This video made so much sense. Very helpful for a first-time cat owner he will be one years old in 2 weeks everything explained in this video makes so much sense
I’m really glad it helped.🙏🙏🙏🤗💕💕💕👍 Around one year old, many behaviors start to click into place, so it’s great you’re learning how to read him early. Understanding what’s normal makes the relationship much easier and more enjoyable.😻
If you mean knead, in fact cats do knead people with their paws. Cats and dogs both are masters of eye contact. And both semi or totally close their eyes to show trust.
Exactly. These signals are clear once you know what to look for. The video is meant to help people learn that language, not redefine it.👍
BEST ANALYSIS of a cat I have heard! All TRUE and CORRECT! Well done! Because of that! Liked and Subscribed. See you in the next episode. - PS: My cat thinks she's Princess. Queen of the house. If she doesn't get a wide variety of food dropped in FRONT of her,...she just walks away! ??? Naaa, don't feel like eating that today. What else have you got! "Oh sorry your highness! Let's see what other CORDON BLEU food i have for you",...
Thank U, really glad U enjoyed the analysis and welcome aboard.🙏🙏🙏🤗💕💕💕 That honestly made me laugh because some cats truly believe they are royalty and we are just the personal chefs trying to keep up with their menu. And yes, that “I don’t feel like eating this today” attitude sounds extremely familiar, looks like her royal highness has trained U perfectly already.😁😼🤣🤣🤣
