It never fails to amuse me when I read comments such as “it’s not that hard to play like Jimi“ or “he was just a blues and R&B player who turned up his amp” Imagine trying to play this song live, keeping in time throughout AND singing at the same time. Very, very few can only come close but not quite there. God bless you Jimi.
He was so intuitive but also so technically brilliant and iconoclastic. I can't think of anyone who really plays like him. Stevie Ray Vaughan could get some of it down but not the whole creative spirit.

Add to that his song writing abilities and singing plus stage presence and looks, you've pretty much got the whole package in one. Sure, there were/are others that can write and perform and come close, but Jimi was also pushing the musical boundaries of what was possible with an electric guitar. Even today in 2023 there are many players out there still scratching their heads trying to figure out how Jimi got those sounds/techniques. And yes, before I 'big him up' too much, he had his off days (no shortage of repackaged poor quality crap out there) but when on form, in my humble opinion, he was in a league of his own.

I thought- but he had SUCH a beautiful voice, and all the other talents. The songwriting and arrangements and the creativity. I like lots of guitarists- Rory Gallagher, Brian May and so many others but Jimi was in a league of his own I think. It's so sad he didnt live longer and produce more music. A great loss.

I also think that in the last year or so of his life, his playing really picked up. If you compare his earlier work with the experience (purple haze, stone free etc..) to his later work (Valleys of Neptune, power of soul etc..) there's a real maturity in his playing. Only 27, such a shame.

@damon gant He actually recorded a bit of studio stuff with Miles & Cox, (mainly BoG related), but then Miles got kicked out and Jimi brought back the Experience with Mitchell back on drums & Cox instead of Redding. This new combination recorded quite a lot of music together and you can hear it on official posthumous albums, some of them contain the material Hendrix 100% recorded for his next studio album, which was like 80% complete. First Rays is the closest official attempt at recreation of Jimi's vision on 4th album
Band of Gypsys, man i got that album and was blown away, did not evne know how great it was then...but I learned later.. Here you'll hear Buddy and Billy having the confidence of letting go and just keep the groove and let Jimi loose..I mean that solo is so out of the ordinary, you cannot comprehend...and both of them keep it...and ofcourse Jimi floats effortlessly towards them to connect ....it is totally amazing if you get to understand how far out Jimi went at times...

Jimi was such an innovative rhythm player, forget about his solo chops and the physcdelic stuff. His rhythm playing is always funky upbeat and optimistic. I dont think hendrix ever wrote a truly serious solemn brooding track. He was melodicaly complex but never versed into the deranged or manic side of the physce like say a Pink Floyd who could be both haunting and beautiful but much more emotionally dark and damaged. I think Jimi was a happy playful man and it showed in his music.

No one went to a Bulls game to watch Horace Grant and John Paxson they came to see Jordan . Just like Hendrix he is the sound the show the hole reason everyone came ..

I really liked the direction Hendrix was moving in musically before he died, I feel if he'd lived another year or so we would of had his best album.
Check out his posthumous albums. First Rays of the New Rising Sun for a start.
