  • The Victorinox Evolution 23 is probably the smallest currently available Swiss army knife with both a saw and magnifying glass. But a lot of potential buyers may have some concerns…

    I like that the Wenger knives came with a file in place of the small blade, which they’ve now copied on the Companion. I would love Vic to introduce the Wenger blade lock to some 91mm models. Fieldmaster with small file and lock? Perfection!

    Most of us include a smartphone in our everyday carry. The ability to take zoomed in photographs and videos is fantastic. During review of the photos and videos, the images can be further magnified. Obtaining the images at difficult angles can be accomplished. Flash can be used to augment difficult lighting situations with the photographs. Even though a magnifying glass may be useful for imaging, the smartphone camera on many smartphones is a quantum leap forward. Of course, if the magnifying glass is being used to start a fire, then a camera won’t do that.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  Год назад +1

      Oh, yes, excellent point! I've often thought that a smartphone can replace almost everything in EDC depending on what other technology you have around you. Of course it can replace a notebook and pen. It can replace a watch. It can replace house keys with some of these new technological locks. It can replace car keys if you have a Tesla, I think, although I'm not sure. It can replace a wallet either by sticking a sticky wallet to it or by actually just loading your cards into Apple pay or a similar app. It obviously has a flashlight on it, which I think you said. I think the only things that it's not going to replace are really a knife and a multi tool!!
      I actually have a magnifying app on my phone as well, and you're right that it does a fantastic job!

    The magnifying glass is 2/3rds smaller in diameter than Victorinox Swiss Card, but its magnification is still good and the 'glass will light a fire if the sun is out. The end piece is a useful screwdriver which I like. Regarding the scissors, these can be sharpened beautifully by a technique that Felix Immler shares in his YT workshop series. The scissors' spring is excellent and stays attached whereas SAKs usual scissors use sprung steel, but if they come undone away, I warn anyone they are extremely cussed to replace. If scissors are to be used at all, then a small pair of Fiskars will do the job very nicely.

      Oh good luck to me that you wrote to me! I have a question I need answered, and maybe you can answer:
      Have you taken your Rescue Tool interior in a structure fire? I think the rescue blade may have some promise for entanglement? I know a fixed blade built for decreased fine motor skills would be preferable, but I'm also kinda wondering - would the handles melt??

    • @xtremehardy388
      @xtremehardy388 Год назад

      @@thevineclimber Every time I go into a fire, I carry it with me. I wouldn't use any of the blades for entanglement unless it was my only option (I carry a few different pairs of cutters that are placed in various areas of my gear). Spring assisted is great for the fine moto skills part as a folding blade requires a bit more work and concentration. However, the rescue saw is fantastic for cutting drywall (whether it be for finding hot spots or cutting my way through to another room if the room I'm in suddenly flashes over). The handles will eventually melt but if I'm in a situation where the handles are melting, I'm in a situation I shouldn't be in. The Rescue Tool stays in it's sheath on my bunker pant belt. I use it more during rescue and EMS calls. Also on car accidents. I have a Sentinel Wavy / Clip on my radio strap and that sees a LOT more action than the rescue tool.

    I just ordered one tonight and to be honest I’m very excited to carry this one. I find it to be cute and charming like a jelly bean, but still robust and capable of course. Actually all the evolution models give me that feeling because of the scales if that wasn’t obvious. But the evolution 23 comes with a cool magnifying glass. One I like much better than the ones from the Victorinox original pocket knife line.
    Also I find it worth mentioning when I bought this i couldn’t find a brand new evolution 23 anywhere except through the victorinox website. Even used on eBay I almost got no results. If the universe isn’t playing tricks on me when I’m searching the web than I would deduce that the evolution 23 must not be very popular. However I think we’ll miss it if it ever leaves production.
    If you already have an opinion on this or you just know things related to it I would love to hear about it in a future video.

It is a lot more sturdier than the regular one, but unfortunately it's very small. I have seen lots of broken regular ones made of cheap plastic, so I probably would go with this one even though it's uncomfortable. I never liked Wenger swiss army knives, although I did collect swiss army knives, so ended up with some and this version was one. Of course this one is the Victorinox rendition with improvements like can opener and the awl? The magnifier is poor to be polite and if you use the screwdriver on the end ,be careful the lense doesn't fly out!
    The scales add so much width to the knife also!
    Wenger were the masters at innovation and if you look at the Wenger Giant, you will see just how many innovations they had.most failed and it always surprises me Victorinox never did a proper lense on this implement, and that these odd few Delemont models even still exist?
    One to try out is the evolution s54 or as Wenger called it the tool chest plus ?

      Hi Mike!I do truly love this knife but I agree that the magnifying glass is difficult to use.It's too small with too high of a magnification.The Victorinox version of the magnifying glass is significantly better! However it is the smallest way to get both a magnifying glass and a saw on a Victorinox knife. And I like having both of those things! It really isn't small enough to make it easy for me to carry but I still like it a good deal and if I have misplaced my Swiss champ I will carry it with me temporarily.
      I like to see how many things Wenger innovated. I wonder if the internet being like it is now, if they would have had greater success with all of the many inventions for the Swiss army knife.

    So the title of your video is very misleading ..... You explain how all your concerns are not really concerns ..... Hmmm
    OK video otherwise! Although you are probably the only person in the world who sees Beavis!!

      Going for radical honesty here, I'm going to admit that was not a good title, and it was click bait. I'm sorry. BUT I'm super glad you watched the video... and now you're gonna see Beavis, too!!

      Wow, that is very interesting, I'm gonna go look at it when I got home. You know, the Evolution 23 is available at a quite low price on Amazon for around $40 and has been for months it seems to actually work really well. I haven't noticed any function problems with it, but it definitely is at a suspiciously low price. So I'm gonna go home and take a look at it and get back to you about the tang stamps. Because I thought it did have them. But I can't tell you for sure.
