Turpan basin is located at the eastern part of Tian Shan Mountain (Mountain of Heaven) in Xinjiang, China. The ethnic music here has a distinct Central Asia rhythmic flavor, and lutes and fiddles are widely used to create instrumental polyphony. I find that the tempo and the passion in the ethnic music carry resemblance with the lucid and lively tango of South America. Turpan Tango is an attempt to fuse the two different music genres into one.
