  • The iconic Sydney Gardens in Bath with the unique spectacle of mainline trains thundering through England's last eighteenth-century pleasure gardens on the historic GWR main line.
A railway photography adventure in the iconic Sydney Gardens in Bath, Somerset, England. Nestled at the end of Great Pulteney Street. These exquisite gardens are not only a public open space but also the last remaining eighteenth-century pleasure gardens in the country.
Listed as Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, Sydney Gardens have the unique spectacle of mainline trains thundering through Sydney Gardens on the historic GWR main line, built by none other than the visionary engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, during the 1840s.
Our adventure doesn't end there! Join us as we embark on a quick visit to Box Tunnel, an engineering marvel that traverses Box Hill on the Great Western Main Line between Bath and Chippenham. Completed in 1841, this 1.83-mile tunnel held the prestigious title of the world's longest railway tunnel at the time.
An opportunity to witness the harmony of nature, history, and engineering as we explore the Sydney Gardens and Box Tunnel.

Really enjoyed the video, Sydney Gardens is a place on a list to visit for a very long time. Been to Bath a few times and even seen the former Bath Green Park Station and there still some great locations even with that modern fencing up. Seeing Box tunnel was a bonus that I enjoyed as well.

Excellent images Andrew, I very much enjoyed visiting Bath in December and checking out not only Syndey Gardens but also the 'Bath Lookout' - which was certainly worth the steep climb on foot! It's always great to see someone documenting a location you've also visited, although I must say I'm annoyed I didn't spot the 'camera-sized hole' when I visited! Still, that justifies visiting again I suppose.

Lovely video. I always think of Sydney Gardens as Brunel’s idea of railways as theatre. Shame about the railings but I suppose you have to allow for the behaviour of the bottom-feeders. Excellent images and ideas. I look forward to going back - when it’s warmer. Many thanks.

Dear Andrew, a suggestion: you could take a crate full of beers to the park, relax and drink the beers in the sunshine, then utilise the beer crate as a height boosting step to see over the railings.

Fantastic work Andrew. Much food for thought there. I went to Bath about 3 years ago, and in the Park in Sydney Gardens , there were high fences surrounding the railings, so, I really struggled getting shots. Glad that’s been rectified now, I need to return!
