I'm always immensely impressed by your arrangements. It's amazing how you can take a song that is normally a 1-minute loop and embellish and expand it into a full 5 or 6 minute piece with so many twists and turns. Good stuff, as always.
This is easily my favorite cover on the new album. I remember that, during the first time I heard it, I was smiling like the whole way through, my mouth just agape at the sheer splendor of this arrangement. This arrangement hits nostalgia nerves in all the right places. You not only bring back memories of Jolly Roger Bay and Dire Dire Docks, but this arrangement also somehow seems to supplement that nostalgia by truly embodying the location in the music, highlighting the locations in ways that our imaginations always did when we played the games...if that makes sense. It especially embodies Jolly Roger Bay, in my opinion -- the echo effects and harmonics and all just really make me think of a still, peaceful, foggy Jolly Roger Bay. The horns embody the smoothness of adventuring in the water, and it all feels so vast and free. It doesn't lack determination despite its immense peacefulness. It's genius -- it's a feast for the ears! Kudos to you all again. And again, and again, and again.
This hits all my niche favorite things, childhood memories + Pastorius big band arrangement + bass melody, been listening several times per day for 10 days. Thanks for this guys. Gonna add this standard to my jazz band's repertoire immediately. And you bet I'll be playing the melody on bass...
That build up and transition from 2-2:20 was so epic and full. I've heard so many versions of this song, and none come close to the warmth and quality of this recording. Thank you for remastering a song of cherished memories..
You have no idea how many times I have listened this beautiful and amazing arrangement from the 8-Bit Big Band on Spotify. Since the very first time I listened to it, I thought in the music of Pat Metheney and Pedro Aznar (the vibes are definitely there!). Amazing bass solo, beautiful voice melody and superb performance by the band 😌 words are not enough to describe my appreciation for this work.
Lol, Insaneintherainmusic just uploaded a cover of this a few days ago... Glad you guys made one too :) Edit: oh wait, this song already was in your new album on Spotify. Well then I'm glad you guys uploaded a cover video :D
Damn those ornaments on the bass are so natural and voice-like, to say nothing of the entirety of the playing! I love it! Big Jaco vibes (like with the harmonics lol), but it's so good just on it's own terms, really!
I loved every part of this but, man, the vocals were so incredible! Such a perfect fit that it feels like it should have always been there! Phenomenal work!💜💜💜
Some of the lines you chose throughout the main portion of the song reminded me so much of Jaco's playing on Havona, and the tonal and modal nod to Portrait of Tracy was suuuper tasteful
As a lifelong jazzer and video game enthusiast, you, your band and your arrangements bring so much joy to me! I also happen to be a video game audio programmer for a living. No accident. My only suggestion is to feature Jimmy as a trombone soloist. He’s a wonderful bebop trombonist and is being underutilized. Oh, and I LOVE that you’ve incorporated strings and vocals! So lush and fantastic. I wish you all the best!
Hope you don't mind me butting in here, but as someone who has listened to jazz for decades (and who only played the original Tekken), I highly recommend Australian ensemble 'The Consouls' - cleverly combining consoles with soul. They mostly stream/record live performances with a little bit of studio recording in between and focus on vgm but they've done a few anime arrangements too. Most of the time I don't know the original tunes but when I go back to the original, I am always amazed at the creativity of their jazz arrangment.
Yet another brilliant example of people displaying there natural talents. I applaud you all and I look forward to the next masterpiece. If I could make a request: Dr. Robotnick boss theme!
I saw a clip of the bass solo on Instagram earlier last year and it inspired me to do my own bass featured cover! Thanks for the amazing arrangements and insanely high quality production
The problem with insaneintherain is that you can never match the quality of people who play fewer instruments at a higher skill. One of the curses of multi-instrumentalists is the common trope "Jack of all trades. Master of none." While he can make some great recordings & arrangements, there's always a depth to his playing that's lacking. I respect the hustle, but he could be doing better things as an arranger for others & honing in his talent on just a couple instruments.
Wasn't paying too much attention to the video for a minute, and right as I look back at like 2:30, the dude dips his head and stares into the camera. Broke out into a sweat after that, got scared outta my mind. That aside, great playing!
I want to thank you for all of these great arrangements and videos. My jazz band is still meeting online (100% virtual distance learning) and we have watched almost all of your videos this year. You've inspired my students in many ways and as a band director / classic video game enthusiast I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching these! Thank you!
Mr. Gordon thank you for sharing these with your students!! This band would definitely not exist if I hadn't played in big bands in high school, thats where I first fell in love with the sound so I'm thrilled to hear I can some how inspire other future cats with these charts!! If you ever wanna do a Q&A on zoom with your jazz band I'd be happy to do it, DM me on social media or use the contact page on our website!
For my taste, if this isn't your best yet, it's tied with the top. I caught myself literally holding my breath at the end. Now I need to try and find this on Spotify or Apple Music for even better sound quality...
Woah that's a cool bass solo
How did you see this? It's on unlisted hahah. well congrats on being first I guess

I always got a chill down my spine whenever I played Dire Dire Docks. It's so soothing.
Why am I teary-eyed? 🥹The nostalgia is real. This performance is sooo amazing, heartwarming and beautiful! Love Mario 64! ❤❤❤❤
