"We belong in a movie try to hold it together 'til our friends are gone" and "Fall asleep in your branches you're the only thing I want anymore" These lyrics just gets to your soul and I think that only The National can write this kind of lyrics!
I think its hard for ppl who has ever been rejected or ignored or betrayed...how someone who is so perfect for you picks the worse person ever....u have to watch the video abstractly
I like how the lyrics give that sad feeling about wanting someone you can't have And I like how the video shows that kind of classic senario about a guy who can't have someone he secretly loves when she falls for someone of higher position, it's an unexpected situation, but it fits with the lyrics well enough. I love this song.
um, what are you guys talking about? this is one of the most perfect music videos i've ever seen. the performances are so impeccably acted that you understand all of their very nuanced gestures without ever losing track of the song. and the very specific places in which the band members appear. that was all very intentional, you know. if you actually pay attention you'll see all the statements being made about love, the nature of government, and the nature of... well, nature, really. it's gorgeous.
I totally agreed with you, although I also accept that when I first watch it didn't do anything for me. I think is one of those vids that takes time to reach you, but when it does, oh boy oh boy
this song perfectly addresses the difficulty of having meaningful conversations and the feeling of discomfort that is sometimes experienced in social interactions.
Still no explanation, eh? 12yrs! 😂 Hmm.. With this band, I admit there's just too much that goes way over my head, as well.. Which I feel says a lot, as I've dissected lyrics by alternative rock bands for years; It was a hobby of mine (and my friends) to try and place what WE felt the artist meant and what WE related to and turned into our own. With a song like this, I saw, "conversation 16" as representation for the longing and desire that he may be depicting in this song; calling back to the 16th conversation about something specific? I was never sure. I just really liked the cadence and flow of this song and enjoyed it for what it was.
This video is brilliant. It seemed campy and goofy at first, but it really becomes tragic and haunting, especially at the end. Poor Secret Service guy. :'(
How have I only just seen that there was an official video for this??! Certainly in my Top 5 favourite National songs. The video looks like it was alot more fun to be in than to watch.
I don't know what you people are smoking, but I love this video. And this song. Most videos don't fit the song, if you haven't noticed. This fits better than most. It's funny, and also is showing something that most of us go through in life, which is wanting someone who doesn't even notice us.
Right? The national make timeless music is why. They're perfection. My favorite band for last decade or so and have been to two live shows! Dreams come true!!!
Had forgotten the songs name. Had also forgotten how the song sounded, searched on spotify on artists like The xx .. and there was The National. At last I found the song.
I came to see this video because I needed to listen to The National before I see them live. Now I've seen John Slattery, I'll need to watch "Mad Men" when I get back home. Damn!
"We belong in a movie try to hold it together 'til our friends are gone" and "Fall asleep in your branches you're the only thing I want anymore" These lyrics just gets to your soul and I think that only The National can write this kind of lyrics!
Because he loves his family that much
Yes
“‘Cause I’m evil” line gets me every time
You're here because you have a great taste of music!
😭😭😭
I’m here to try to figure out if there’s anything other than the lead singer’s voice that I like about the national.
@@ersylanellajoy452 sad
@@ersylanellajoy452 do you like guitars 🎸 or drums 🥁 or keyboards 🎹 ? If you do I can name 3 things innately just by listening 👂 😂
Yes. I do. Thank you.
Still listening to it late 2024
Just remember that The National started when they were in their 30s.
Matt Berninger is 52 now and still going strong.
Don't let your dreams be memes.
thanks, dude🥲
Good advice. I'd take it if I could. But I'd feel so guilty.
I listened to this song a lot when my marriage of 18 years ended. Listening to it today brings it all back.
" We belong in a movie" "I was less than amazing" Those lyrics speak volumes to me!
I think its hard for ppl who has ever been rejected or ignored or betrayed...how someone who is so perfect for you picks the worse person ever....u have to watch the video abstractly
Kristen Schall, John Slattery, and the National? It's a combination I never thought I'd see, but I love it.
I don't think I could love The National any more....
Holy shit it's Kristen Schaal, Roger Sterling and Doctor Rusty Venture!!!
I had no idea about Doctor Rusty Venture / James Urbaniak until I saw this comment. THANK YOU! This made my day

I love this song.
Hearing this live was everything.

+Spencer Vik : So true ! Also about hypocrite people ...in love or politics

After this, i`ve not say
Specifics aren't necessary

I've been searching for this song for 6 years, and I've finally found it. love it!
And I found you 8 years later. Be my pen pal.
Wow, so happy of you 🥳🥳🥳
If you haven't already, it's worth checking out the rest of the album "High Violet", so good.
this song perfectly addresses the difficulty of having meaningful conversations and the feeling of discomfort that is sometimes experienced in social interactions.
This song has so much depth to it. That even the title is a metaphor.
talk more about it
i've loved the nacional for 10 years bur always find it harsh to get their lyrics
Still no explanation, eh? 12yrs! 😂

I stayed for both!
phantasMoon69 i came for both!
I stayed for the music, I came for Roger Sterling.
+ Louise Belcher & Dr.Venture
It's Rod Serling, boys. Serling. And yes I stayed.
The National is the most thought-provoking, sad, depressing, inspirational, catchy, deep....fuck. They're great.
Is everyone gonna ignore the elephant in the room which is how incredibly handsome Matt looks in this video?
My favourite album of theirs, and this track effortlessly illustrates how they are masters of their craft in the context of their genre.
Music is my addiction. The National is my drug.
This song is so great and underrated. Omg
true
Let's tell Al the fans of Kristen Schaal about this video. Spread the world. The majority of them have no idea shes in this badass music video
This video is brilliant. It seemed campy and goofy at first, but it really becomes tragic and haunting, especially at the end. Poor Secret Service guy. :'(
After 8 years I finally found this song lol. I remember the very first time I came across this video was on MTV

Sweet love?
The apex of music videos. Best music video since at least the medieval period
I love this video. It may appear to be funny on the surface, but it's actually really sad if you think about what happens. John Slattery is amazing
their all songs beatiful
A perfect video. There are no words to describe it's perfection.
true!
I agree!!! I was so hoping.
I think I'm obsessed lately. Even the pre video ads have Matt Berninger in them.
I don't know what you people are smoking, but I love this video. And this song. Most videos don't fit the song, if you haven't noticed. This fits better than most. It's funny, and also is showing something that most of us go through in life, which is wanting someone who doesn't even notice us.

EU AMO ESSA MÚSICA! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
A banda é muito foda!!!
My favorite national song atm!! Tomorrow can be different. Love this band soooo much
This song still speaks to me, since I first heard it in 2010
Right? The national make timeless music is why. They're perfection. My favorite band for last decade or so and have been to two live shows! Dreams come true!!!
I was hoping for a much more haunting video.. but the National do no wrong in my books. Absolute class.
The video is perfect indeed!
The look on Matt's face at 2:50 when the President gets that underwear is PRICELESS, best part of this video
Love that John Slattery is in this video!!!!
Love matt's face when he sees the thong.. Ha ha ha

I literally JUST realized they got Louise to do this :DDD i love it
+TheseShenanigans It freaked me out the first time I actually saw this woman speak with Louise's voice. It didn't even sound real.
the national is my favorite band
1:25 se a pessoa não se imaginar levando um tiro por mim, eu nem caso kkkk.
As nuances desse clipe são ótimas kkkkkkk pensei a mesma coisa

To 1.51 it's a good song, since then it becomes wonderful.

your voice is just amazing
completely agree
this video is brilliant!!! so bloody funny! ha!
199 com mal gosto. The National são simplesmente perfeitos.
Lo amé, el vídeo perfecto para la canción perfecta..♥
How bizarrely prophetic a video--
My favorite ❤️
I love this video so much. It kills me that they're doing the meeting on a roof.
I love you guys.
Not sure I would have connected the song and this when making it, but watching it it works
The bodyguards are John Slatery (Mad Men) and Matt Berninger (the singer himself )
One of the most incredible songs, I wish I had not watched the video though. It's like seeing a movie made after a great book. What can you do though?
Love it how Matt just stands in the background looking hot.
2:48 the best moment in music video history
this is hands down the best music video idea ever
What a underrated masterpiece, specially since 2:23 tough, really tough.
