Eric, you are by far the best music teacher on RUclips, nobody else ever teaches expression the way you do. With that in mind, I’ve often wondered how you’d approach the swing of early AC/DC. Many have tried, few have ever succeeded in translating the apparent simplicity of the timing and feel, and most importantly of all, how to make it swing and look easy. Sorry for the tangent.
Eric, thanks so much for doing this series. Feeling musically exhausted and uninspired to play at all after a kind of grueling recording run and a bad gig, this series has me off my ass and playing like myself again. Great stuff, man!
Oh man, I am loving this series! Loved learning the double approach! So spooky, moody, atmospheric, melancholy, kinda gothic in the very best way, like an old hammer horror film, omg, my new current addiction is double approach! Such a cool lesson! Thank you Eric! ✌️😌🎸.
my main focus right now has been trying to remember how songs go so i can play through them, the way you think about it as you go through it might be the most helpful kind of thing ive come across
Your RUclips on what to practice got me to pick up my guitar two days in a row (so far) and the cage stuff also got me fooling around with some changes in fun ways. Thanks, Eric.
Mahavishnu. Damn dude, that learning curve just turned a corner. What’s next, comping the Giant Steps changes with a back beat? I kid of course, but this is really great.
In College we studied a class on Improvisational Jazz. My tutor was a savant and he introduced us to Mahavishnu Orchestra, and it was at that point where I reverted from “okay I get this whole theory thing” to “okay I play this chord now and then that chord after etc etc.” I was well and truly lost, but I was content. I think that’s where I’m at with this series now!
@@OM10PYE improvising is a lot less scary than it sounds. I'm no 'savant' or anything, but all I needed to start improvising was some knowledge about chord progressions, modes, and a few scales. The beauty of improvising is it can be as complicated as you want. It's all up to you.
@@OM10PYE One day at a time, my man. It's not rocket science, just a lot of pattern recognition. Oh and for the love of God don't bend, jazz cats hate that
I am still smitten with this gorgeous piece of music. Learning these chords by ear off a turntable was such a great thing for me, because it is such a slower and more examining way to learn, at least for me. I use the thumb but mute the A string as on my amp set up it's too much, I like the openness. I have to go play now! thanks

Hey Eric, longtime fan, first time caller. Loving this new series as an indie rock-oriented guitarist trying to expand his horizons. Are you familiar with the band Karate? '90s-early 2000s Boston post-hardcore trio that were heavily influenced by jazz (IIRC the members went to Berklee). Highly recommend some of their stuff, especially the album Unsolved, for music/guitarwork that splits the difference between rock and jazz really elegantly!
Great video as always! How are you finding that Supro Amulet, Mr. Haugen? They are just starting to become widely available in the UK and they are looking mighty enticing.
Interesting. I’ve been following along, but found myself confused as to how you picked the modes for each chord change when you came up with those licks. Specifically what key were you working off of and how did you go about choosing the particular mode (specifically for the non-Dorian modes)? Sorry for the questions. The solo sounded really cool by the way! Very prog rock sounding.
I was just thinking about John McLaughlin this morning. I have to admit that he is the most revered guitarist with which I'm almost completely unfamiliar. Paul Simon's "Allergies" was running in my head and I was thinking about McLaughlin's stellar work on it. I am sorry to say "Resolution" seems to me almost a parody, the same phrase repeated a step higher to the point of absurdity. I like your solo, though. As for the changes, let the bass player handle the Bb and just play short form chords over it on the guitar. It's nice to be in a band.
Sounds like you're evaluating solely on technical terms. He made this song because he liked the way it sounds, or what he feels it says... not as the usual Mahavishnu tour-de-force. Do you dismiss that?
@@SoWhat.BigDeal. I'm not sure how you know why McLaughlin wrote the song, but you may be right. I only said that was the way it seemed to me. Probably the same for you. And as I said, I'm not that familiar with McLaughlin or MO.

Mahavishnu got me into whole-tone. I can't play it properly, but I know what it sounds like. Unmistakable. Cheers.
You just turned this series up to eleven with this one. Love it!
Great video! Love Mahavishnu! And very nice take on the solo! Keep it up man!
That chord progression is insane, and what you've played over it sounds fantastic!

Eric. You done and doggone done did it again. Absolutely brilliant.

lovin' the series but had to shudder with the use of A# when everything else is Bb. it spins my head in unnatural ways :)
Algorithmic relevance bump
What he calls a "double approach" is known as "enclosure" in the jazz world.
Thelonius Monk was no stranger to the whole tone
