    Now if we could just get Lowe's and Home Depot to stock them, instead of making them online-only purchases!

    There's none on my exterior garage door and the threshold is just sitting in there. Its a concrete ledge but rain runs down the door and gets in the garage this way. Looks like the door would have to be removed to install a sill pan. Concrete isn't going to rot but the bottom of the jack studs for the header will. I'll put some flashing tape around the jamb and caulk the threshold for now; eventually I will have to tackle this job with a new door. Its on my wishlist.

    $27 at Lowes for a 40" I bought two for garage. Even though the dining room to garage doesn't get any water the other one going outside does so it's good practice to do both.

    Now pan flashings are a minimum code requirement. The 2012 International Residential Code (IRC) R703. 8 Flashing section goes further than the '09 code and is pretty specific: “… pan flashing shall be installed at the sill of exterior window and door openings.

    nice job......would you use a metal pan over a cement sill??? I have an install at a house with a cement sill. it is 6 feet long and 5 inches wide. It goes from 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches left to right...in other words, it was built to level the door because area had a slight grade to it......I am putting in an all vinyl slider from Pella. Not sure what to put on the sill first.

    How much harder is it to do this to an existing exterior door? It wasn’t done correctly the first time and lots of water soaks the carpet every time it rains hard. Thank you for your time.

    I have a concrete slab foundation that is 2" above the concrete patio
    do you still recommend a sill pan for this sliding door application over a slab and how come places like home depot dont stock these sill pans

    • @briandrumm4484
      @briandrumm4484 6 лет назад +4

      It certainly couldn't hurt...It's still going to help kick any moisture out away from the studs and finish flooring.
      As for why big box stores chose not to carry them, I don't know for sure but I can only assume that it has to do with what sells. They aren't going to take up room on a shelf for something that most homeowners don't even know about. Bravo for those who care enough to search them out!

    The 2 ends should be on top of the centre piece to create a mechanical flashing

  • @newkidflip430

    Using PVC or CPVC glue won't give it a water tight seal. The glue causes a chemical reaction to the pvc/cpvc pipe and melts kinda melts it to give a good seal.

    What do you suggest for facial board under the slider???
    Video is excellent 👍

  • @petepapadopoulos6639

    Why wouldn’t you put the ends over the top of the middle piece so that any water that potentially hits that joint, it doesn’t get under the overlap? Or do you think that is not necessary

    Does this pan have to be installed before the frame goes in or can it be done after the fact?

    I noticed you didn't caulk under the sill pan. I've seen many do that. Is that not required?

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  6 лет назад +1

      Caulk or low expansion foam are applied at the inside edge of the pan to air seal.

    What about the kick plate that goes on the under the exterior sill… isn’t water is now directed behind that… how would you flash the kick plate?

    QUESTION: is the flashing under the sill pan extra protection. you can counter sync another flashing to the sill, right

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  7 лет назад +2

      Billy Snow
      Yes it adds a second layer of protection. Whatever you want to add helps, but don't get too fancy and don't add any holes by mechanically fastening it!

    • @yrulooknatme
      @yrulooknatme 7 лет назад +1

      Brian Drumm Your gonna add holes when you screw that threshold down?? How do you treat that ?

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  7 лет назад +4

      There are no fasteners added that go through the flashing pan. The bottom track of the door is one continous piece of aluminum and is held in place by fastening into the studs on both sides.

    Most installation instructions I've seen say to place caulk under the (sliding glass) door. It seems caulk would prevent the plastic sill pan from draining. Do you recommend no caulk under the door?

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  7 лет назад +5

      Jeffrey R. McVannel
      I normally run a bead of silicone along the inside leg of the pan. It air seals that edge without getting in the way of moisture draining out.

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  6 лет назад

      Caulk is placed along the inside leg of the sill pan to air seal against there inside of the door but still let the pan drain.

    • @paulkasman
      @paulkasman 3 года назад

      Don't use caulk, use construction adhesive, like PL. Some use an overlapping sine wave pattern with breaks that allow water to drain. Lot of different ways to do this.

    At 3:28 because of the added height of the Gacie Flash your plastic sill pan is now angled so water will run into the house, not out of the house. No?

    • @briandrumm5264
      @briandrumm5264  5 лет назад +2

      John Perricone there is a slight slope built into the plastic pan itself so it’s enough to overcome the thin layer of flashing.

    My husband & I are installing a new front door in a couple weeks. I ordered a 6-9/16” sill pan through Home Depot. I based it off of the depth of the jamb, but I’m having doubts if that’s the right size, or if I need something smaller. I’ve Googled & RUclipsd, but no one mentions depth size. Any idea?

    • @Sku11Leader
      @Sku11Leader 3 года назад +2

      The jamb size is based on your wall size. If your walls are 2x4 construction then you'll need the 4-9/16th" jambed door and sill pan. If your walls are 2x6 then you'll need the 6-9/16th" ones. Just measure the jamb of your existing door and get the same. Good luck!
