Well [D]ang, it looks like these machines just want to escape to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism.
I will get into it later in the playthrough (because we're NOT DONE YET) but apparently I am wrong. That thing that I said should happen a ton times DID happen a ton of times, we just never get to see it, which I argue muddles the presentation of that plot point a little bit.
