Guru Basavanna preached lingayat dharma . Veerashaiva is not a dharma but a sect with in Hindu dharma.This point is clearly expressed by the our union government in the year 2010 when the Akhila Bhartha Veerashaiva Mahasabha gave representation to declare Veerashaiva is an independent dharma . Again the the Veerashaiva Mahasabha gave another representation in the year 2013 to declare Veerashaiva lingayat dharma as a separate dharma to the government of India. The government of India rejected the appeal in 2010 and 2014 on the ground that Veerashaiva or Veerashaiva lingayat is part of Hindu dharma because it follows Vedas, agamas and puranas. It is true that Veerashaiva is a part of hindu dharma. As panchacharyas claim Veerashaiva dharma is founded by Renukacharya who took birth in stone and merged with stone linga of kollipaki which is in Andra Pradesh. There is no definite date of birth and death of Renukacharya. Veerashaiva's preach chathurvarna which is very much against the dharma preached by Guru Basavanna. Veerashaiva's have no faith in vachana literature but they claim that siddhantha shikhamani a Sanskrit language book is their sacred text. Veerashaiva's consider Guru Basavanna as their follower and not as a Guru.
