This is a fantastic direction to take the show. I appreciate how you draw connections back to your roots in shorter boards by discussing how the hull and the rails will relate to the surfing experience. I think that, as a community, we surfers are interested in different experiences on waves and how those different experiences can influence how we get stoked about riding our other boards. Funny enough, I tried my wife's 7'2" mini mal on a junky day here in Los Angeles a month ago and it gave me a fun and refreshing experience when compared to my go to shortbaords. Since then I've actually taken it out on some better days and feel like it has given me an appreciation for longer boards and some new ideas about how I should ride my shortboards. Keep it up!
Okay so I ride both long boards and short boards. Being in South Texas, long boards are used a little bit more frequently. I wanted something a little more fun to ride than the typical long board on those small days. So I chose this board in an 8'2" length. Now I weigh 165 pounds and I am 6 feet tall. My other longboard is a 9 foot Stewart Redline poly-PU. This board blows the Stewart out of the water. It can turn, it can cruise, it can nose ride (for a short time, lol) and it is so stable while offering all those things. It is honestly the best thing I have ever surfed. Now on big days I still bring out my short board (6'0 SuperBrand Vapors) but on every other day pretty much waste-chest high or lower, this thing just works amazing. The wave can start fizzling out and you can just cheat up a little bit, put just one foot up on that wide duck nose and she starts to build that speed up again. It's magical. All while having near short board turning abilities when you sit back on that razor thin tail with that tail rocker that lifts her front outta the water and with a quad fin set up and that moon tail, she just CUTS so well! Also, the Timbertek construction is amazing. Not only is it gorgeous but it is really tough, I bang it up against the truck and not a single thing ever gets damaged. I just really think this is an underrated type of board construction.
+ZmannR2 Cheers, that's really helpful. Thinking of getting the 8'11 SubMoon. What fin set up do you normally use? (Numbers, positions and rough sizes would be helpful!)
I picked up a slightly used 7'6" Submoon recently and have been really enjoying the board. I'm 59 years old, 182 lbs and have been surfing in Florida for 40 plus years. The Submoon floats and paddles really well. It also catches waves easily and turns like a short board when stepping back towards the tail. The board is also very fast and really shines when you find a steep face! I tried a 7' Submoon and found it too small and shortboard like compared to the 7'6" Submoon. For my age and ability the 7'6" Submoon is perfect, whether it's 2' wind chop or 5' glass, the board works great!
I have a submoon and have ridden it from 1ft to 6ft bombs. When riding it you need to understand about shifting weight and walking or stepping around on the board. I found that it performs a lot better as a quad. I ride it anywhere from small beach breaks to on the points in Byron Bay. I go through a lot of boards and this one will never leave my quiver,,, This board is fun,,,with a capital F Marty Ware (Australian Micro Farmer) ps: It actually goes not too bad in the Barrel around the head high range!
Thanks Chris, your unique blend of surfboard knowledge and gifted eloquence really blows my mind. Altho I am interested in all boards, I find that as my fitness and ability increase, I am increasingly drawn to high performance boards. Would love to see a review of the DHD Ducks Nuts. A lot of pro's are riding DHDs and for good reason, they rip, as do you. How about a little footage of you riding the board you review? Love it that you now give the dimensions for the board you are holding, it helps to feel out the info related. Also hope shred show is working out for you financially as it soooo deserves to. Infinite love and gratitude.
Yeah Duck Nuts! Setph and Mick made their boards in Trestles and Portugal look so sharp! Try to get your on one of those mate! Cheers from Portugal as always
Great video - love the change in direction with format. Could you do something on single fin hybrid boards like the Takayama Scorpion or a Bear wombat? In fact any Takayama or Bear board would be great! Cheers.
sweet video again chris. really helpful as my partner is looking at a picking up a fun board as she progresses. love the timbertek too, although i just smashed my t/tek spitfire rails on the rocks in raglan (nz) :( looking forward to the next video, cheers.
It's interesting to see different shapes because it offers different perspectives on board design and brings in a different crowd of surfers interested in these boards. Myself, I've prefer the shortboards and grovelers type reviews due to my interests and the intricacies between different shapes, concaves, rockers, foils and how they interact with other as one cohesive entity. I've purchased a CI New Flyer and Proctor Rascal II based off your reviews and really enjoy them. I'd be interested in seeing similar reviews but also your opinion on how these boards ride.
Good review, I think one of these would be perfect at the Pass in Byron in those crowds,,,need to have more paddle to compete against all those mals out there on smaller days. Cheers Marty Ware (Australian Micro farmer)
Hey Chris, love your reviews, I've learned so much, and you've helped me get my boards right! There is just nothing like you're knowledge, enthusiasm, thoroughness, and always engaging delivery -- I'm always stoked to go to the black room! So, I'm looking to get a Submoon. I'm trying to figure out if I should do a 7' or 7'6". I'm 38yo, 185Lbs, 5'11", average+ fitness, average+ ability, a long-boarder turned everything, but no fancy stuff, just carving on the face, a quick turn in the pocket, holding a high line in a faster wave, an all-too-occasional trip to the green room, etc. I like the 42L of the 7', people are saying it is still duck-divable, but I'm wondering if it has enough volume in the mid and nose to hold me, float me, paddle well, pick up waves easy, and hang a few toes off every once in a while. It's actually such a thin profile, I don't want to get a "sinker". You suggest riding it between 1-2 feet longer than I am tall, and the volumes look spot on for that. I wish they made a 7'3" at 47L, I bet that would be perfect for me, but alas, looks like they don't. So.... Do you think at my size and weight I should go with the 7'6"? Would it still be as nimble? I have a step up board (6'2" 37L ...Lost Quiver Killer) but I bet when I get this Submoon under my feat I'll be riding it even in head high+ and faster waves if I can make the drop and a quick enough turn, which it looks like the tail will support. Would appreciate your two cents -- many thanks! -jeremy
Great show Chris! Thought you might like to review a Bonza sometime as I've not seen one on your show yet. Campbell Bros. in California make some nice ones, especially like the Russ short model! Cheers
I have been watching your show for awhile now and I just want to say that this show has really helped me understand boards in a new way. I also have been looking at the Lost Sub Buggy by Matt Biolos shaped by his rider Kolohe Andino and I wanted to know your thoughts on it. I live in Huntington Beach Ca. And if you could feature it that would be great.
Hi Sred!!!!!! you makes me a Fan!!!!! Cool explanations and fanny way you make us know a bit more!!!! Could you analize the PUKAS Original Sixtyniner??? Cheers
Hi, thanks for the video. My Submoon is a 6'8 and I have to said "I love it ". I have another FireWire board all of them perfect but this one is a special board
+crisanto badilla Hi Cristanto, may I ask, what is your height and weight? I'm 83kg, 5'11", and I'm wondering if I should go with a 7' or 7'6" Submoon. Thanks!
Hi Jeremy I'm 76kg, 5'7 but righ now I'm surfing a Submoon 6' 4 to. I think that you can ride that 6'8 . Maybe 7 o 7'6 are to long for you the Sub M's are not a longboards you can ride "like" shorboard. Sorry I dont write good
+crisanto barilla Thanks, Crisanto, that's great to know that the 6'4 is working for you, awesome. These are amazing looking boards, unique, I can't believe I just stumbled upon them now. I've been dreaming of something like this for a decade! I'll certainly consider shorter then, awesome. Cheers and thanks!
Hey im looking at getting this board just wondering about what sizs to get. My current board is a 6ft8 double shaka. Im about 5ft 9, and between 68 to 70kg. And my surf level is beginner/intermediate. Cheers Alex
Chris could you review the Channel Island Remix? I know its an older board but i would love to see you review; there isn't any good reviews on it. Or could you just give me a suggestion on fins for the Remix, Im 165 Lbs
Any guidance on proper sizing here? I looks like I could go on the shorter side, but I'm temped to take a longer version that I would normally to take advantage of the extra length and wave catching help. How would you pick a proper length? Thanks!
+James Krejcarek I'm thinking of the same things. What did you decide on, James? I have to travel for any wave at all so shorter is better, though I'm a long-boarder at heart, turned all rounder, like to get a few toes off the front in the right conditions, wondering if a 42L 7'0" will hold me (185Lbs, 5'11"). Did you get one? If so, what size and how did it work?
Awesome job Chris!!! Been waiting for a review on funboard to longboard range for a while now. Can you do the Takayama Scorpion?! Oh and that Boardflip to catch though!!!
Thank you Duane I'm lucky to have not dropped one yet. I spent some time with Guy Takayama (Donald's Nephew) a few weeks back and may get one of his shapes soon.
SurfboardShredShow Thank you! I learned heaps from your videos Chris! Sweet!!! Can't wait for more videos!! The groms episode was informative as well. Keep up the good job man!! Cheers!!
duane hernandez Hi Duane, I have a Takayama Skorpion, although a Surftech. I think it's 7'2" or 7'4", and it's a fantastic board. I don't normally like mid sizes, everything I have is really long or really short, with the exception of a 6'8" rounded pin for when it's heavy. The skorpion is a ton of fun, it paddles almost like a full on longboard, it's very flat and gets into waves early, but the tail is so narrow and thin that it sinks really well and makes it very maneuverable (I'm riding it as a quad). Obviously on steep drops you have to go in at an angle like you would on a longboard, and on really fast waves it might not be a good choice, but I've used it in a variety of conditions, from knee high to easy OH +1/2 on the reefs, and always had a blast. If you are good on a longboard it can be a great allround board, because you'll feel at home and have appreciate the agility.
I did not want to accept that you were covering a funboard lol, so the whole time I just imagined there was a pointed nose and a little more rocker in front and it would have made a interesting comparison to what nathan fletcher has been riding on the north shore, a long, wide wooden quad haha
Ha! How's this - Nev Hyman designed this shape and began by putting his Sunset Beach rocker into it, before lowering nose rocker and leaving the tail as is. So strangely you're not TOO far off. Always appreciate your comments @ichorousmedia
