As someone who hikes quite a bit with my dad of the same age, I'm totally feeling you in this video! It's hard worrying about him while also trying to enjoy the trail and also needing to keep pushing to an extent in order to not get too short on water. My dad is also definitely one of those stoic types who will struggle a lot but just push on without complaint. Great video and I wish you luck on your journey!
Get an umbrella! I have seen lots of hikers on the pct this year with them and they are glad they have one! So awesome to do some miles with your Dad cherish that!
Remember, there's LOTS of little things to remember on the trail, not just the big ones. As time passes you'll thank yourself for commenting on the little things that made your day. AND it will make your vlog enjoyable to watch..... someone sharing the little things in their day and finding out what they're all about. Best of luck on the trek ahead!!!!
How awesome of you to realize those few days with your dad are so much more important than making miles! Those days are irreplaceable! Looking forward to catching up on your journey
And the odyssey begins in a magical place. Enjoy your dad's company and savor the experience. This is something that you will remember the rest of your life. By the way, I am your dad's age, and I will be thru-hiking the John Muir Trail NOBO this summer. Wishing you good health and happiness on your journey.
OMG! Positivity OVERLOAD! I like it! I hope one (or both!) of my daughters drag me out to hike with them on the PCT when I'm 64. Maintain sistah soul-jah! I can't wait to watch some more of your vids.

It’s the heat I’m telling ya! After 50 the heat just gets to you. Your Dad is still a bad ass! Enjoying your videos and looking forward to following along.
I'm over 50 and just started PCT hiking...in the chilly Fall. Kinda ironic bc the 'heat' rarely bothers me (provided I stay hydrated). I'm no fan of cold - possibly a major obstacle to thru-hiking for me. I need to stay warm! I mostly did ok hiking part of the PCT near Mt Hood in October, but I needed much more wool to deal with the really wet cold. Learning as I go. Hike your own hike definitely applies to age, genetics, body-type, fitness level, etc. I suspect that colder climate fans do better in the mountsins, but where there's a will, there's a way, right.
I'm sure it's just the heat bothering your Dad. What great memories your making with him. I'm sure he will cherish the time he gets to spend with you hiking. Good luck on your Journey !
Thanks so much for checking in. 8.8 miles is great! Especially in that heat. That was a funny story about the motel room and your dad offering the shower to the two women. Lolol..... Really looking forward to the next video, but you enjoy every day first. You and your own experience out there is the most important thing.
Hi Jennifer! A word of caution. I noticed that at the end of the video you were hiking in sandals. Be aware that the dust and dirt can quickly dry out your bare feet, leading to cracking and infection. Socks would offer some protection. You should, however, be okay wearing sandals as camp shoes or during water crossings.
Charles Sullivan Sandals are the normal footwear for humans since there were humans, since before the first migratory patterns out of Euphrates and tropical Ethiopia 35 million years ago, on raft and on land bridges, from the Outback to the Andes, to the Mongolian desert, Polynesian islands and beyond. If your not on snow, your in sandals.
The first day is always so special!! Quite an adventure you decided to take on. Dad's pack looks heavy, poor dad! Nice of him to give you a send off. Your transformation into hard core hiker has begun. Booze is no one's friend in the desert, you did good to pour it out. Us older hikers still think we're young inside.
Going back to day 1 , I started watching close to half way threw , crazy how different you seem from day 150 and day 1 , you seem more grown up , I am 50 so your still young lol you just seem different in a good way more experienced . I love watching your videos and seeing what you have seen, I felt like I missed so many so I wanted to watch from the beginning. Thank you for these videos , this is the only way I will see most of these areas.
Eek I just happened upon this video and fast forwarded and landed on this DEET spill. That stuff is toxic and corrosive (it’ll destroy your watch face) even though it works great. Make sure to keep it upright and separate from everything else (especially food). You probably don’t need it in the desert sections anyway. Good luck! It’s fun seeing that monument again!
omy goodness. Your dad is the sweetest! what a wonderful experience. I dream about doing the PCT with my kids when they are teens. how amazing! ( even if he is just with you for part of it)
Nice video with great views. Make sure you stay safe and hydrated. Nice new ultra light brush and also chili Mac with beef was by far my favorite when on the JMT. Only problem was the gas....
Nice video, awesome start together with your dad. My dad is 82 still running at least 2 Miles (Swedish) a week. Stubborn as h.... which is not always good. That trail angel would have scared me too though🤣
Hi from Australia! I literally just discovered your channel after having watched quite a few other thru-hikers do the PCT on YT. I'm actually really excited to see your journey as it goes along and I just wanted to leave this little message. You seem like a very spirited young woman & even though I don't know how things pan out I have a good feeling that it'll be sweet.
I just watched your Q and A on your most recent video, and thought I'd go back and see your day one video! You've come so far, and Im sure when you reach Canada it will be most victorious for you! I'm sure I'll shed some tears with you as well!! Stay strong out there!
My first backpacking trip I went with a friend of mine that figured he could muster through the weight, carried everything including cans of beans for dinner every night! He regretted it by the first mile! Haha! Backpacking always humbles the stubborn, like me! Haha!
Super vid. Delighted to hear your irish. I'm irish and I know that heat especially the temperatures your experiencing is tough and especially on your dad. Lord knows if I pass under a 40 watt bulb I get burned. All the best to you and your dad will be following your adventures.
Nice video. 8 miles is pretty good the first day, especially with heat. A little hydration and sleep usually cures any heat effect, but age does make it tougher. Good to see you and your dad on trail together. I'm sure you already isolated that bag of DEET inside another bag and outside your pack. That stuff is nasty, once it spills it gets on everything, even food that isn't totally hermetically sealed. I double bag it and only carry it when necessary, headnets and long sleeves/pants are much easier for me.
Jeniffer!! Wow!! Good to See you in youtube!!! This is Ange & Goro. We met at Mt. Laguna and talked about heading to Julian. We are Staying one more night at Laguna becuz of the weather(wind storm). Hope u are walking OK. See u on the Trail!

That is my FAVORITE Mountain House meal lol. When we meetup on the trail, I'll bring my stove and a few Mountain House options. :) And anything else you might be craving.
Lizards sound pretty cool but you defiantly do not want to see a rattlesnake. The trail looked great, nice and easy to follow but the area looked really dry (we are used to a lot of rain the North of England). Must admit as soon as I saw you dad with that enormous pack on, I though man, that is going to hurt. At 64 very well done to him, I am 63 and I know how difficult it is to carry a camping pack, just for one day, so much respect to him. Nice start to what I think will be a great watch. Good luck, cheers Alan
Alan she will see rattlesnakes - there are lots out there and I haven't ever heard of a PCT through-hiker who hasn't come across a rattlesnake! The joke she was making was more that she'd seen TEN in her first 4 miles ;-)

My experiences with hiking have taught me lighter is the only way ,and avoid red meat it makes you hotter in heat fats in general increase body temps
