Jiren was one of my favorite antagonists because he represents a side of Goku that he spent the entirety of Super overcoming. Goku had a goal of becoming the strongest, fighting the most powerful, and a lot of times he didn't care what had to happen for him to get stronger so long as he did it himself. He didn't like having to use the power of other people, even given willingly to fight Beerus in Battle of Gods. Goku realized throughout Super that this sort of behavior won't lead to strength because he lost every major fight in the series. And that isn't an exaggeration. Hit? Zamasu? Golden Frieza? Whenever he relied on his own strength he lost. Jiren is that side of Goku fully realized, and by the time he attains Ultra Instinct, Goku realizes that it's not a proper way to act.
Jiren wasn't meant to be interesting on his own, more so to be a comparison to Goku.
Jiren showed Goku there’s so much more levels he can get to. Goku was the strongest in U7 so he never encountered a being so strong the gods marveled at him.
I wanna see God of Destruction Toppo vs God of Destruction Vegeta (UE Vegeta) tho.

@@SRT_DRE Goku and Vegeta understand that for Granolah the fight with Gas is personal to him which is why they both sit out and rather let him fight alone. They'll probably try to fight him together in the next chapter

I will never forget how difficult it was for Goku & the Dragon Team to eliminate Jiren. Jiren eliminated Hit & Vegeta, he was strong enough to compete with Ultra Instinct Goku, in the end, it took the teamwork of Goku, Frieza & Android 17 to eliminate Jiren
Next time, Jiren won’t just beat tf out of them without eliminating them. He underestimated them as a team. When they fight again, he’s going straight for the eliminations and that’s going to be scary.
He’s actually crazy if you think about it, scared someone away, one shot kale, tired goku out in their first battle who happened to have kaioken blue, used the spirit bomb, and used ui sign and he couldn’t stand a chance, then he tired hit out next, held his own against goku and vegeta, who were in their respective maximum forms, including vegeta’s evolution blue, then afterwards was able to later on handle against them again, alongside 17 and even tossed frieza aside, you get the idea.
Jiren was an absolute monster, he literally tossed everyone aside, and I would love to see more of him

Jiren’s master and the clown god were close friends. The clown god was a former pride trooper. So I assume the clown got Jiren to join them. Then Jiren got promoted to God of Destruction, but he didn’t want the job cause he doesn’t destroy. He’s a protector. So next in line was the clown god.
If theres a second tournament of power like the one Geekdom was talking about potentially could happen then Jiren could be in that one then they could do a rematch

I like Jiren and his character because he's this nonchalant, chill character that only cares about justice. As we saw in the manga, Jiren didn't care about the ToP even when Toppo told him that the Universe could be erased, but when the Super Dragon Balls were brought into the picture, then he entered. This goes to show that Jiren didn't care that the Universe could be erased, he just wanted to serve Justice. Also another reason is that it's not everyday where you see a mortal who is stronger than a GoD without training with any angels or has god Ki. Jiren attained his power soley for the purpose that strength is everything, he wanted the power so that if one day the monster that killed his parents comes back, he will be able to kill the monster. Jiren never trained/sparred with anyone and had power greater than a God of Destruction, that should be impossible, but Jirens whole character is labeled around impossible. Took on hits time skip like it was nothing, 1v2'ed Goku and Vegeta even when Vegeta had his new form, and unlocked even more power at the end. Jiren is by far THE most interesting character in DB history and they definitely bring him in the next anime.

@@salvulcano1136 I don't think Justice is necessarily what he's after, considering everything he's done. He doesn't fight every battle he can, only the one's where they really need him but if he fought more battles he could easily lessen casualties and damages but I'm sure that's because this is a kids show and they don't care about that. Furthermore you can't tell me Justice is his character when all he talks about is power and strength. Jirens true character is about power, all he cares about is being the strongest because "Strength is all that matters" as he said. Your line about Jiren caring about justice I think is just wrong, that's toppos character. Jiren is all about strength, I mean he called Gokus friends meaningless and tried to kill them so do you really think this is a man who lives by "Justice"? Or does he live by strength and power?
While many see him as a bland antagonist, I would honestly be down for a movie that covered Jiren’s past and his thirst for power in great detail. It would be interesting to see what kind of villains and rivals he clashed with in his respective universe as well as the training he went through to gain that much strength. If handled right, it could do wonders for his overall character and leave fans wanting him back in the series again for future threats.
Jiren is my favorite dbs character! Loved how they cloaked him in mystery in the beginning!
Yeah it looked epic
Many points to why i like Jiren since before and after the end of the show:
- to hide his weakness, he gathered strength to the unreasonable point. He was motivated by trauma which i can relate to. It is not easy to overcome.
- he's simple: no transformation, no known biology power-up, no last minute power-up skill, no power of friendship. Just him and the raw power he gathered by himself.
- being an opposite of Goku's strength ideology without being a villain.
- although he's innerly a loner, he can be of help to others and work with them.
- no one *triumphed over* him in a 1v1 matchup. Both in manga and anime, the main characters had to team up to defeat him, thus firmly standing his strength. I do not, personally, count MUI Goku's win for two reasons:
* TOP's rule on how to eliminate others and
* although he did beat Jiren in a physical aspect, this one wasn't yet out of juice and his weakened mind made him lose the will to fight. My point is: an opponent is *triumphed on* when, fighting hard both mentally and physically, they still got outclassed and lost. You could argue, following my point, that Goku did triumph in the anime but his victory was cut short by MUI's drawback and he couldn't go all the way to eliminate Jiren by himself in the end.
Just because the execution was poor doesn't mean the character is any less valuable once you get to know the details about them.

If anything Jiren is Goku without the dragon balls, a very great contrast to Goku the protagonist and what it means to have strength credit to SethTheProgrammer for that

I liked Jiren as a character because it is clear that he was made to be a counterpart and opposite to Goku. While Goku seeks to become strong and achieves it by interacting with different fighters, getting to know them through fighting and even changing them, making them reconsider to make them better versions of themselves until they become his friends and allies (even Frieza changed not in person but in his interest in start training to unleash his hidden power which he never gave importance to), Jiren is the opposite: someone who became strong on his own without wanting to establish connections or be interested in others, not even his comrades like Toppo and the rest of the Pride Troopers
Some people compare him to DC Characters such as Superman.
@@henkaistudio He is a Superman-type character like many seen in different media like Homelander or Omniman but he does not display typical Superman traits such as his optimistic and smiling attitude, gentleness, etc. More like a BvS type but no so much

It's also important to note that the smile and the glass shattered around him in episode 131 after Toppo gives him encouragement is a metaphor to say that his trust is back, then he's defeated by Goku and Frieza as a team, TRUST
Honestly, I think Jiren gets too much shit. While he's basically your generic edgy anime protagonist, I think that's what he's supposed to be. He's like Goku without Dragon Balls or the ability to see his friends. Someone who's lost those he loves, and become cold and bitter.

My favorite character. Dude pushed Goku and Vegeta to their limits. Without any major transformation. He was just strong. Once he puts something behind his reason for training, he's gonna be a freighttrain.
He finally realized he needs to trust his friends. That alone will make him a whole lot stronger. Imagine him and Toppo working together in a fight. They literally would’ve won if Jiren didn’t just watch Vegeta plot hole Toppo out of the tournament. There’s no way Goku, Frieza, Vegeta, and 17 would’ve beaten Jiren/Toppo teamwork.

@@dark-xh7fs I agree. Jiren could used his glare from the beginning and just knocked everyone that wasn’t strong enough to defend it out of the ring. He had multiple opportunities to throw Goku out of the ring but just let him run and hide idk why. I think Toppo took it serious but the whole Vegeta blowing himself up and somehow surviving his own self destruction ruined that.
Next time I wanna see Gohan vs Toppo.
I look forward to see jiren more & how he develops further in the series I think an arc about other universes would be great instead of just universe 7

He sounds just like younger Torgoro from yu yu hakusho! Togoro came back to his dojo where a demon killed all his students. He went into isolation and changed, after he beat the demon he asked to be turned into the highest class of demon, with strength absolute. Jiren also wanted strength absolute. Both didn’t want to be in a state of weakness to never have something taken from them ever again. Great video Danny!!

Marcarita's comments in Episode 111 stating that he's in a different league after seeing his performance, after only recently seeing Jiren for the first time and being filled in by Belmod as to who Jiren was. Vados in the same episode stating that he was like no other. The fact that in the original airing of the special, the Grand Priest had to put up a barrier to protect the Grand Zeno's. The angels and GoD's in episode 130 being in shock after Jiren was able to down UI Goku. In episode 131, he continued to be just as agile and nimble as he was in his previous fight. He shook an infinite reality, broke out of Hit's Time Cage, fought 17, Goku, Frieza, and Vegeta in a 4-on-1, shielded the Pride Troopers from Aniraza's shockwaves, was able to jump higher than the T.O.P. pillar in an instant after recognizing Goku had set up bombs to exploit an opening and was able to propel himself back up to the T.O.P. arena stage by jumping on tiny pebbles that were heading downward, launched an infinite amount of punches in a mere second, and all whilst not exuding a fraction of his true power. When he was exuding his Full Power, the entire T.O.P. arena was engulfed in fiery ki. When he was at Super Full Power, the entire World of Void was set ablaze, and his power was able to nullify UI dodging. Super Full Power seemed like Jiren's infinite potential was realized and brought to the surface and he continued to grow in strength to meet the challenge, resisting all the way up until the end. And when the glass shattered in episode 131, it was like his mind was freed from trauma, and he could fight with mind, body, and soul at once. Jiren's Super Full Power felt like the amalgamation of his pursuit of just and virtuous strength
Jiren the character that everyone says his back story is trash but he has the most human back story in the series
I always thought of Jirens meditation as like a Combat Meditation, almost like Batman’s prep time. He knows he’s stronger, he’s just mentally projecting himself analyzing everything around him so he knows what to do during combat. Like think Piccolo and Gohan sitting there meditating and doing the same thing, but they’re sparing against each other.

Thank you for posting this! Jiren has always been interesting, especially his PTSD. Jiren is still scared of facing the one who ended his parents & his master. Take note of the Batman reference. Rather than face that again, even if he knows he'll win, he'll rather keep training & getting stronger, forever. Imagine if Vegeta stayed training in the Room of Spirit & Time just to avoid Perfect Cell, or a gamer remaining grinding to pass a difficult part, but forever. That's Jiren. As strong as he is, his psyche is still broken. Beautiful.
Not gonna lie, when I first saw Jiren, I got superman vibes in terms of overwhelming strength. My first thought was this is dragon ball's version of superman for goku to eventually defeat.

I'm watching this video now cause I just got off work and Jiren is one of the best characters in super. Period. He wasn't a villain. He wasn't a hero. He was a monster that had laser focus on becoming better. Like Vegeta but with Gokus progress.
I will say I like Jiren and appreciate that Toriyama and Toei flipped the "physically weak gray alien" stock character.
Jiren's character growth in starting to make connections with the other Pride Troopers makes me want to see him again to see how he has changed.
I believe Whole heartedly that if Jiren came back hed be stronger than Goku is. Remember he got that strong on his own with some flaws, such as not trusting anyone or not really caring for others long as he strong enough to do what needs to be done. After that tournament Jiren was a changed alien. Goku helped him grow as a character. And now that hes more open minded and more apathetic towards others and other things and also the most important Trust. He now sees that the trust of a powerful freindship can help you. And with that growth hes bound to become stronger being open to other training methods, maybe even tryna learn UI, or something close to combat UI like he was. Idk i hope he comes back.
There is something unique about Jiren’s species. He possesses power and strength well within the realm of divine beings despite only being mortal and can transcend time itself; I mean, who in the world does that?

If you look aylt manga you can say with a confidence that goku would still lose. Just like vegeta.
6:41 Precisely, he didn't want to be strong for the sake of being strong. He wanted to be strong, so that he could use his strength to protect other people, trained himself to travel across planets in mere moments so that other people would never experience a lack of justice like he did.
He honed his senses, understood that the best means of defense was to guard, can almost instantaneously deduce and respond to incoming threats, and fights honestly with no tricks and doesn't exploit openings.
He has personality, but in order to be a peak fighter in combat, every moment must be treated as though there is danger, and that is true. You are never safe. So he must be reserved, vigilant, aware of his surroundings.
Goku was wrong saying that you can trust people and for what he did. People who say that are using their friends, or peers for this or that reason. You become dependent on people, and you allow yourself to become open and lax. He constantly uses his friends, when it's convenient for him, and then forgets about them if they're not strong. Jiren wasn't trying to convince Goku that he was right. He was right. But, he had someone who was trying to convince him of that and make him question what he knew was reality and if you're in that situation where you know you're right, and someone with no experience is trying to change your perception when they don't even know themselves, you would obviously be pressed. Not to mention, this guy is also forcing you into this fight out of pure selfishness, and your whole universe and everyone you've known and whose peace you've tried to protect is on the verge of being deleted forever by an unstoppable force. Jiren approached his life correctly and dedicated his life to protecting other's peace. He took lessons from his life, used his head, and learned from them. It's why he'll always be my favorite and most respected character

hmm. yeah it was a epic asspull. to bring freeza back and be relevant in power to dbs goku. i aint denying that shit. freeza could just go upto ssb but he trained and it was said he was a fighting prodigy tho. never trained before in his life. so they at least tried to give a decent logical lore. then he also had a deep lore built around him. before that. in dbz. so it makes sense in a way. his own strength being able to catch up. he was born with such a high power level.... kinda like the legendary ssj of his race. even his original final form in dbz was close to super saiyan goku. so thats pretty badass for someone at that point in db. at that time he was the strongest being in the db universe. to be fair many charas since freeza already proved to be able to fight ssb by this point in the series. my fav being Hit. but ya god ki became fooderized dbs shitty writting. ya god ki isnt as special as it once was and can be opposed by mortals and with no special deity training as well. amazing... wtf!! sad but whatever. it is what it is.
also freeza and his dad are special powerful mutations of their race or someshit. they are the only ones of their species we ever seen in dbz/dbs. they are special lolz. a rare race that we dont really know much about sadly. pretty much the most powerful species in dragonball upto that time. they ruled galaxy and shit. all im saying is freeza makes at least a bit more sense for his power overall compared to jiren.
nothing special about jiren tho. so him being dominate over ssb and god isnt that shocking to see. and its like anyone could have attained his level power with the same trauma bs he had and dedication to power...
seriously vegeta should have been at that level then. they got same ego and pride. and vegeta suffered way more brutal shit in his life!! and vegeta is always into training and shit as well. so yea its lame. come on mortal ki fighting on par with MUI is just too much bullshit to drink in!! just to hype this mortal who is beyond GOD. its bad enough he was keepin up with omen UI. especially if you followed the hype Whis was building that upto to be since ressurection F. form which no G.O.D. even could master. it was very much made to be the highest anyone could go in dragonball lore since dbs. so jirens asspulls in TOP ruined it for me by the end... i was a fan of the gray. but then i lost the hype. :(
and it paved the way for MUI to be fodderized in going lores. such a pity to see. just like god ki. but with UI they really just fucked up bringing in UI/MUI too early in the series. should have saved it for the grand finale of dragonball. and i gotta just stop replying to these. way too many of my comments. lmao. but boredom. hope we get more dbs super hero n gohan news soon... :D

Jiren has a good foundation, but he needs a lot more character outlining and development before I can truly call him a good character. I feel like people like Jiren practically for the same reasons people liked original Broly, just because he wields power that can easily dominate the perceived peak of power we have grown accustomed to in the series thus far. It makes for good visuals and the primal satisfaction to just see numbers go up, but it's incredibly shallow and hollow once you look past that. What makes DBS Broly so much better than original Broly is that he is more than just muscles upon muscles, and Jiren needs that same kind of non-cliche character depth the next time we see him.
That's if we ever see him again.

You did not just compare Jiren to dbz broly. Jiren has a way more interesting backstory that dbz broly.
Yea but the simplicity of his character combined with his overwhelming power is what made him interesting to me. Because it just makes me curious how he trained and what he did to obtain this power. A being that could go toe to toe with someone using Godki and Ultra Instinct without having or using these techniques himself. Hes not the perfect character but he was deff a good character. And a breathe of fresh air at the time.

I completely agree with Jiren's philosophy regarding acquiring the ultimate strength/power and being a loner where one can only rely upon himself and no one else.

Honestly my favorite character in all of Dragon Ball. 🤷🏾♂️ His backstory didn’t need to be overly complicated…the fact that it was as simple it was made him that more compelling to me. His friends, family, and master died so his goals and ambitions made sense. We all have been there as people, feeling letdown by others and feeling as if the only way to fix things is by doing it your fucking self. He is exteriorly one of the toughest opponents Goku and Vegeta have faced but he was also internally one of the weakest…what makes Jiren so tragic is that he hated himself, he hated the fact that he thinks he let his master and everyone else killed. Great vid and I hope people can let go of the “complex for complexity sake” way of thinking…buddy just wanted to protect people with power and power only and that “pride” was ultimately his downfall…that’s it, that’s all you need. Also, Manga Jiren is substantially a better iteration of his character but the anime version was still decent.

Loved this character in Super he really was a challenge to Goku.
Toei or Toriyama should make an arc or special about him and explore his backstory just they did with Future Trunks.
Jiren is so cool fighter that even his aura have its own auras.
He is my favorite character from Goku's roster of oponents.
Imagine Jiren learning a god transformation varient like Goku and Vegeta did and it makes his body lean, but muscular. I'd love to see something like that for Jiren if/when he returns. :D
I also like Jiren, the fact that he was able to block Ssg punches with 1 finger, reverse the Genkidama with his glare, I mean, only MUI could avoid his glare punches. (I mean, his glare technique is probably the most badass technique I've ever seen) He One-hit Kefla and over, and being able to defeat Hit's secret time skip technique was really impressive. I just hope they don't disrespect his legacy, and don't make him weak as the series progresses. He's not that type of guy.
Jiren became one of my favorite characters in DB the moment they first introduced him. Yeah his backstory is very "plain" and "basic" but they did rush the ToP arc numerous times throughout and his backstory they definitely could've polished a lil bit more given the fact. Nonetheless, he didn't/doesn't need some unique, extravagant backstory. I am interested and hope they dive back into his backstory again at some point and actually give us more insight on how he crossed paths with the Pride Troopers, how and why he joined etc. That would definitely be interesting. I hope we do see him again because I do believe he picked right back up where he left off in terms of training after the ToP and since Goku needed MUI to actually give himself a real chance of beating him, I am curious to see how their rematch would pan out given he is one of the top 3-5 strongest characters in the DB universe in the current timeline of the Granolah arc in the manga.

I think PTSD is a bit of a stretch when describing Jiren in regards to his tragic backstory. Sure, he suffers from multiple extreme depressions that would sensibly lead to PTSD, yet he's completely void in its symptoms. Rather, he seems incredibly obsessed with power only, reasoning that with this power he'll never get hurt and can protect those he loves.

Jiren is my favorite character from the dragon ball franchise. He's written well and his dark path remains me of Batman. I hope they bring him back throughout the series kinda like Hit another badass.
Jiren probably could of soloed the whole tournament if he was serious from the start. Thats the crazy thing. Lots of fighters would've been knocked out if Jiren just hit them with that attack he does with his eyes.
Never thought of this till now but, Jiren is the way he is because of a person that killed his whole race and killed his friends, and Goku defeated Jiren together with a person that killed his whole race and his friends, and that's also the reason Goku is the way he is.

One thing I can give Jiren credit for is him reaching freakishly strong heights without the need for transformations. I still have a high opinion of him to this day.

My question is...over time...how and who showed him how to use his eyes to increase his speed. To flash his eyes and somehow makes time slow down around his opponent while he stands still observing the space in front of him is insane. It's as if he's manipulating time and space to use his fists. Vegeta seeing it shocked Jiren because it's probably something that took him a long time to learn.

Idk why people hated him. To me he was a breathe of fresh air compared to other villains/protagonist/antihero however u wanna describe him. I loved his quiet demeanor and his over whelming power. Till this day hes my favorite character despite how new he is. This is the one dude i HOPE they bring back at one point. I legit would not mind a Jiren spin off series.
They recently pulled a retcon on his strength/power which annoys me but I do hope we get way more from him than just to get newer forms for Vegeta and Goku (at that time).
Maybe in season 2 there will be fillers that cover Jirens backstory and who is the villain that killed his parents.

When DBS returns, it would be cool if they added the plot twist that the G.O.D was actually the one that killed Jirens parents. DB needs depth, it just fell off the cliff with Super.
My friend that I watched a couple episodes with said he didn’t like Jiren’s simple design but I thought it’s the perfect design. There’s no flashy spiky, colored hair or eyes, just a simple grey alien in a uniform everyone on his team has yet he can obliterate everyone at ToP. My favorite part of Jiren was probably when he defeated the jelly guy and everyone felt SOME power of him and freaked out.

I see Jiren as Bruce Lee and see Goku as Jackie Chan. Bruce Lee has tragedy in his life. Jackie Chan is very into his art. And he is like Goku. Even has comedy. But he is very serious in his art. Bruce and Jiren are serious and is frighteningly strong. But Goku is a heroes that doesn't want power just needs to learn and be better

The only difference is that Hit can defeat very strong mortals and even mortals who become gods while Jiren is stronger then time itself and is stronger then his own God of Destruction of his universe being Lord Belmont and stronger than mortals and mortals who become gods. That’s the difference between both of them.
