  • The Fallkniven S1 may be the ultimate survival knife if maybe it was the knife you had on you while you needed to survive in the bush or forest. This series of knives has been designed in Sweden and made in Japan for abuse, hard use, field tests, cleaning game, batoning, tactical purposes, and other words that help my SEO. Also in this series are the A1, and the F1- but I can't afford all three. Maybe one day if I get as popular as Nutnfancy. Buy from the links below to support the channel.

    Finally, you didn’t “abuse” the knife you were reviewing. Folding knives were invented when some idiotic person broke his fixed blade in half and crudely repaired it with some screws. Then he realized he had ADHD and needed something to fidget with. So he loosened the pivot screw. And played with it. He loved it so much that he married it. And had kids with it. Thus, folding knives came into existence.

    i had the f1 and ended up carrying it IWB. That zytel sheath you can throw the snap around a belt loop and it stays in place pretty good. Ideal for having a carry fix blade if you really need a midsized fixed blade. Also its ideal if you operate, are a pilot who intends to crash in a jungle or humid environment or run shit at the knife shop at the mall and want a super userful fixed blade to accompany your replica highlander sword. For camping (I rather have a cheap mora lighter and cheaper) but its pretty decent overall and good with fire steel. That said I almost never use a firesteel cause my bic lighter works great but I do love the convex grind cause it is ideal for stropping. Slicing sucks with the thick blade stock but its fun to play with. I got ride of the knife cause ise I dont camp much and dont need to carry a fixed blade bigger than an izula. Just my personal experience that said. Excellent knives if you get them for a good price.

    I just grabbed one of these. Not even sure I want it, but when I found out that they switched from VG10 to VG7, I decided to snag one up. People tend to covet things that are no longer available. Like the older SRKs made of carbon v.

It briefly occurred to me to look it up- but since I never pronounce anything right- I skipped it. My first outing with the S1 was a winter backpack deer hunt. Unfortunately, no deer. 4-5 inches of snow on the ground. The S1 was used for fire making, camp items, food prep, and some piece of mind if I became stranded. I liked the dangler sheath and it stayed on me-not stuffed in the pack. I added inner tube bands, paracord, and a pouch with fire steel/tinder to the sheath. It is in my winter outfit as I write this.

    More awesome and witty stuff, love it. I bought the S1 Pro on a whim, thinking I needed to supplement my classic A1. The handle on the S1 is embarrassingly small. Almost dangerous, and throws off the balance of the knife. I have a feeling you're be moving on to an A1 or down to an F1 because of the oddball balance of the S line.

    • @LCO213
      @LCO213 6 лет назад +2

      The convex grind makes it cost more, because they have to hand ground. Other grinds can be done with a jig much faster and with less skill. Also the laminated steel increases the cost.

    I traded into an NL4, which is this knife but with the stacked leather handle. It’s a gorgeous knife and I enjoy using it, but I tend to get more use from my old F1. I have an old A1 that I also traded into years ago. It’s one of the better “survival knives” that I own.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад

      I seriously thought about the F1... but I know I rarely use my esee-3 so I went with this just for fun. Most of my real knife needs are handled by a folding knife. Their NL series are so nice looking. Wish I had the money for one.

    since the terävä jääkäripuukko and its great handle, i cant go back to fällkniven so easily, though i like them and the plastic sheeths a lot. the terävä should have options for orange handles and plastic sheets.

    Has anyone, between the time that the Bering Strait was exposed and now, ever worn a dangling sheath? I'll answer for you: No. But you know what they DO wear? Family members who are from red states and say stuff like, "We didn't land on no moon. There ain't so such thang as a full tang." My Uncle Roy says that, and, bless his heart, he is really popular down at the Elks Lodge.

There's a $40 SRK, and then a 3V for $180ish... so the fact the S1 has a convex ground laminated steel, both things which add cost- it's really pretty in line with Cold Steels offering.

    Hey bro, I've never requested anything for you to review but there is something I'd love to see . Your review style would be perfect for this knife. Are you familiar with those Schrade knives that are all grey, and all one piece construction? They have hollow handles and there are several different variations of them. Just a thought, I'd love to see you beat the shit outa on of them there knives. Lol,

    I kinda like the Fall Knifen but it’s too expensive. I wonder how people even used knives when they were carbon steel and they had no option for kydex? Personally, Kydex scratches almost any knife you can name, unlike leather.

    Cool demo and information. I always hear that falkniven knives are great. But this knife is cool for playing and camping fun. But after watching the Survival Lily review and test video on the S1 she put it to use in a real survival test and it's not good at all. It is a cool-looking knife but if you're not going to use it for an emergency bug-out situation or survival uses in places like Ukraine or Israel etc this isn't based on testing by a survivalist specialist and her test of this knife's a fail and chipped and rolled edges. These knives are cool similar to a Japanese katana. But they're just for cutting precisely rather than being tough to use. Japanese katanas often didn't hit the edge-to-edge of the blades. So I'd recommend watching survival Lillys yt channel to see her true survival situation testing. This knife is imho extremely overrated.

    I found that the "pause and read" text blocks are more entertaining if you read them in a Swedish accent. And when I say Swedish accent, I mean a German accent because I don't know what Swedish sounds like. And when I say in a German accent, I mean I imagine that WW2 leader, whose name I don't want to say because I might accidentally get this video demonitized, screaming it at an office full of generals. Try it and see for yourself.

      @@AdvancedKnifeBro i noticed you mentioned the sand paper mouse pad method. All that I've read/researched kinda swears against this...sorta. if you have a leather strop wrap your sand paper around that and give it a go. The spongy consistency of the mouse pad will cause the edge to sink past the apex causing it to roll over. If you have something sturdy to back the sandpaper it won't roll the apex. My 2 cents buddy

  • @gillbates999

    OK, at 3:17 you say the convex is stronger because it has more steel behind the edge. Actually, the opposite is true - the convex has *less* steel behind the edge, given a roughly similar blade profile (we're not talking axe heads here, right?), which makes it such a great slicer. The "flat + V" grind is the stronger one. The "V" portion has the larger included angle near the edge. (Think about old-fashioned straight razors - no "V" grind there.)

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад +1

      Look at page two of this thread. I’m not interested in arguing at length- like there.
      www.bladeforums.com/threads/what-are-the-advantages-of-a-convex-grind.1493764/page-2
      The fact of the matter is... this isn’t a thin slicer like my Scandinavian grinds or my thin behind the edge spyderxo Caribbean. Like it was accurate when I said it’s sharp but doesn’t give paper thin slices. It splits. You dismiss an axe because it doesn’t fit your line of reasoning here, but include a straight razor because it works well in this example. Those are both extreme examples of a convex edge though.

    • @LCO213
      @LCO213 6 лет назад

      Convex, yes think axe head. Straight razors are concave hollow ground with a zero edge...The exact opposite of convex shape. It sounds like you might be confusing convex grind with a zero edge. You can have a flat ground knife with a convex edge, or a convex ground knife with a V ground edge bevel...and you can put a zero edge on any blade grind. A zero grind is when the edge terminates with no bevel. People generally prefer flat ground knives for food prep, because a flat grind is the best slicing geometry. Which is why most kitchen knives are flat ground with a thin V edge.

    • @gillbates999
      @gillbates999 6 лет назад

      Yeah, my examples weren't particularly well-chosen. And slicing or not slicing wasn't the real topic either. I should've just said "all else being equal..." To stick with this Fällkniven knife, I've seen posts saying the edge chips easily...after putting a V grind on the blade, this stopped.

    • @LCO213
      @LCO213 6 лет назад +2

      The problem with Fallkniven knives is they come incredibly sharp from the factory, and not always, but sometimes come with a very thin edge that can be chippy, but that’s not an inherent problem with convex knives. I convex the edge on all my knives. With the 5 Fallkniven knives I own this has happened twice. After using it, and sharpening away the factory edge the chippy problem stopped for me. Now all my Fallknivens are pretty tough...no issues whatsoever. I think these knives are worth the money. Putting a V edge on one of these knives should be a sin. 😀 Take care.
