    Beau,
I notch my own tubing from 2" type "L" pipe with a 4_1/8" hole saw on a drill press. It is much better to solder the sight glasses on the column first and then drill out the center.

You should start heating where the most material is. That's why you couldn't get the first one soldered in one move. Copper is a excellent heatconductor and leads the heat away from the joint. Try heating over the ferrule first, then swip to the bottom and start soldering. Otherwise, nicely done.. Hope you will be happy with your flute (suppose that's what you are building..)

What goes inside the column? Are there plates below each sight glass? How are they inserted and sealed?

Hi, do you have any schematic instructions for making the whole column?

Did you use flux when making these joints?

RectorSeal C-Flux, paste flux applied to the top part only and then set onto the 4" copper tube...

Where do you get the copper ferrules?

Alexis Marin I make them myself out of 2" type "L" copper pipe and a ring made out of a 1/8" copper sheet cut out on a water-jet machine.

Where do you get the sight glass fittings that have the rounded cut so they set flush to the column pipe? Where can I get the sight glass kit that fits a 3 inch column?

Thomas edwin I made them from 2" copper tubing cut with a 4-1/8" hole saw on a drill press. You could do the same for a 3" column using a 3-1/8" hole saw.

I'm talking about the fittings that you are soldering to the column, those pieces have machined flanges for a gasket and a piece of glass to seal against that has an outer cap and is secured with a tri-clamp. How do you cut a machined part from a straight piece of 2 inch pipe? Those pieces were machine cut just for that purpose. Where did you get the machined pieces for the sight glass assembly?

Thomas edwin the flange is cut from 1/8" copper plate stock with a water jet machine and soldered to the 2" tubing after it is notched on the drill press.

Not everybody has a water jet cuter, I was looking for a premade sight glass kit that just solders on and then you put the gasket and glass with either a threaded collet fitting or tri-clamp fitting.

With a 2" Keego carbide hole saw on a drill press. Bought the bit on flea-bay for about $20.00 then clean up the joint with a flush cutting router bit in my router.

might be a 1_15/16" but whatever fits in the tubing based on what schedule or type it is. I use type "L" tubing...
