Brian De Palma is one of my heroes and the thing that strikes me most in his interviews is absolute honesty and supreme confidence in his views as an artist and a person. And I love his films, there's always something fascinating even in his less successful ones.
Oh, guys. This kid is almost 50. I started going to opening nights of DePalma films when I was 15. That was Dressed To Kill, which I saw 7 or 8 times in the movie theater. I love the guy's work... not all of it, but most of it. Every interview I do starts with the interviewee. What is their mood, intent, willingness, etc? I am certainly flawed, but I am on a 30 minute mining expedition. I use the tools that I can. I'm thankful to BdP for what he allowed me to unearth.
Carlito's Way is terribly underrated. It's very well done, in the classic sense. Mood, suspense, cinematography, editing, great performances. If it weren't for the academy's irrational loathing of De Palma, this film really could have swept the Oscars. I must also say Patrick Doyle's score is classic. For some this film was disappointing because it was not Scarface 2, but it was never meant to be. It hearkens more to The Godfather, The Untouchables, and classic pre-80s cinema. Wonderful film.
De Palma is one of the last real directors. He has real skill and does not have to rely on cheap effects like so many of today's directors. He gets the technical side most directors are too stupid to understand. How many directors have built computers? How may understand the creation of tension? I've heard De Palma described as over the top, but the fact is he has more restraint than most directors will ever have. He's effective and I'm glad he's still at it.
Thank you for this. Brian De Palma has always been one of my favourite directors, so to see him interviewed was a pleasure and a good learning experience.
this guy has a great candid manner while being interviewed. i always have a split reaction to his work (cept for blow out, his ultimate masterpiece imo)....glad he's still at it regardless.
Omg thanks for asking him if he went to Carrie the Musical. 😍 fun trivia, I'm so glad you thought to ask. Good to know he was busy (&didn't intentionally shun it, either time 1988 or 2012)
De palma is a legend. I feel for him as he has had so much crap along with the plaudits thrown at him. You have to be very rock solid to take it all on board.
De Palma is a true master, even if not all of his movies are great he has enough great films for make a case against his haters, i can't wait to see Passion
Highly recommend, BRIAN DE PALMA - MASTERPIECES, on RUclips for a beautifully orchestrated film tribute mix of cinematic cinematography, dialogue & song, FANTASTIC !!!!!
I don't think I've seen many interviews of him or maybe I haven't really looked but I enjoyed this! It's also inspiring to see the longevity of his filmmaking career. :)
Seeing a De Palma movie is like stepping into a seductive dream. Everyone of them - good and bad - always has some stunning sequence that is almost orgasmic in it's execution. I see all is his films in the theater. Just saw Passion and happy to report he's back to transporting me back into that dream. Can't say that about to many directors today. Though, I really loathe the Untouchables.
He is more a Director artist and makes people attract to his movies and a legend like Carrie, Scarface, Carlito's Way, Mission: Impossible, and The Untouchables and with his then wife actress Nancy Allen 1979-1985. Still today ofrumors of his films, he still goes on!
I'm now a much older man but I would sell my eye teeth for an hour with Brian de Palma. He knows more about movies than most contemporary instructors do. If you ever decide to teach a private class, PLEASE contact me. I'll pay whatever price you want.
PASSION was awesome and lots of fun to watch. **** the critics too busy giving super heroes films good reviews DiPALMA Still rocks it and makes great movies
Interview started slow and not enough Passion stuff. Got strong as it progressed. Some insightful stuff pulled from some good questions in the last third.
This is like the second interview I've seen where the interviewer was being disrespectful. I guess he was trying to lighten the mood up but after awhile he just wouldn't shut up. Not sure if it's the same guy, but he was asking Jennifer Lawrence basically the same question over and over about if she gets insecure about her performance when he already got the answer a long time ago.
Have you guys @ichiryuko and @TheReverendDrew ever been interviewed? He was great, with short questions getting it out of de Palma. Sometimes you spot de Palma thinking over the questions like he's never thought about that and then he honestly responds, which makes it evident he gave it thought. I'd like to be interviewed by @TheHotButton. (that's gonna sound wrong)
It's very difficult for a director in this day and age to find someone to give a good indepth interview. Years ago you had people like David Susskind and David Frost and others who knew how to ask the kind of questions people find interesting. I would add Charlie Rose to the contemporary list of great interviewers. De Palma's been burned in these interviews. It took him a while to relax. I don't blame him. The interviewer in this case sounds too hesitant and unprepared. He opens up about half way through.
Well, he did have some decent questions and it wasn't that bad, but there definitely were a few annoying condescending moments in there, but maybe he intentionally gets like that to try to provoke a reaction or something, I don't know, very great interview though, as far as hearing what DePalma had to say..
Critics have long been unfair to De Palma (Except for Kael and Ebert and a couple others), trashing great films of his--like "The Black Dahlia" (which I LOVED!). I feel like "Redacted" was his effort, born out of desperation in the wake of "Dahlia" getting panned, to "redeem" himself in the eyes of critics (because the critics LOVE an anti-war film, whether it's actually "good" or not). (BTW, I find his non-verbal reaction to the interviewer bringing up "Redacted" quite interesting.... Does he regret making that one?) I haven't seen "Passion", but I hope it's a return to form.
***** I likewise went into Passion with low expectations, mostly because the reviews weren't so good, but I unapologetically love that film. It didn't, however, totally land with me the first time around, which I've found to be true for many of De Palma's films. They often take multiple viewings for me to even decide what I feel about them, which is a bad thing as far as reviews go-most will be written on the basis of a single viewing.
What was the anticipated answer to the iPad question? Did he think De Palma was going to say, “Oh, well of course I fucking love it when they watch my shit on an iPad!”
Come on, that's the best interviewer on RUclips. Watch his other videos and compare them to blabla-bullshiters like Charlie Rose, Chuck the Movie guy or even Inside the Actor's Studio. He is better than all of them...
Then how come an endless list of stars are happy to come on his show, not once but multiple times? Perhaps it's just De Palma who's terrible at interviews?

Dressed to Kill is such a masterpiece.
Anyone having done that could rest in peace for ever.
And then he did so much more.
Carlito's Way! One of the greatest movies ever!

The gripping idea of watching a Brian DePalma film, is finding some of the suspense that you missed the first time.

I loved how BdP seemed to slowly open up and relax during your "30-minute mining expedition" and allow you to unearth some real gems.

De Palma's wipe-outs are next decades classics.
And there's brilliance and genius in everyone of his movies.
One of the great artists and technicians of our time.
I’ve Seen Some of Brain’s Films Especially “Blow Out”, “Carlito’s Way”!
best quote of the interview "i like photographing women". biggest understatement of all time.
Sex sells, especially in movies.
Causualies of War was a great and important Movie.
De palma is a legend. I feel for him as he has had so much crap along with the plaudits thrown at him. You have to be very rock solid to take it all on board.
Great Interview,,, ---> GREAT DIRECTOR !!!!
Might just be me but he looks pretty great for his age. You can see all the years of wisdom he's amassed in those nice big eyes of his

I love how grumpy he always seems to be, lol. I totally get that. He's a genius.

try it
He did makes greats movies
PASSION was awesome and lots of fun to watch.

DiPALMA Still rocks it and makes great movies
Great director, Great guy...
I love De Palma. One of my absolute favorites during my college movie geek phase.
Well, I think Mr. DePalma will be the first one to admit he learned from the best there ever was - Hitchcock
Interview started slow and not enough Passion stuff. Got strong as it progressed. Some insightful stuff pulled from some good questions in the last third.

DePalma is a legend
Brian de Palma the new wave figure.
Wow! Great interview!

great guy, last honest guy working in Hollywood? :)
Say Hello to my Little Friend from Scarface where Pacino pulls out the Tommy Gun is Iconic 👌🏼🎬🎞🎥🤘🏻💯
Love De Palma, but I would be so intimidated to interview him, he looks so annoyed being asked all the questions.
Love how honest he is.
Does anyone think he’s annoyed with the age related questions? It isn’t like there’s anything such as “getting old,” it’s just always “new.”
Brian de palma the Poet!
Ugh he's such a badass. Disappointed Passion was panned. I actually quite liked it.
In addition to being a cinematic genius, I find his laid back “kid, ya bother me” attitude a bit sexy. I.J.S.
I love scarface. This man is a genius
Have you ever seen the sequel "Scarbutt"?
Wow, he DOES sound like Jeff Bridges.
Well, he did have some decent questions and it wasn't that bad, but there definitely were a few annoying condescending moments in there, but maybe he intentionally gets like that to try to provoke a reaction or something, I don't know, very great interview though, as far as hearing what DePalma had to say..

De Palma is the best, clearly giving interviews to nitwits is his least favorite part.
He seems so tired.
What was the anticipated answer to the iPad question? Did he think De Palma was going to say, “Oh, well of course I fucking love it when they watch my shit on an iPad!”
There is no point to asking a question if you know the answer. I'm doing a conversational interview, not acting as a lawyer.
Come on, that's the best interviewer on RUclips. Watch his other videos and compare them to blabla-bullshiters like Charlie Rose, Chuck the Movie guy or even Inside the Actor's Studio. He is better than all of them...
De Palma seems so pissed off. Like; get over with it dude...!
He was cranky going in... thought he was less so at the end.
DP/30 He still seemed pretty good natured though. I kind of enjoyed the sass. Some of it seemed played up for laughs.
De Palma is famous for being a curmudgeon at giving interviews.
Bolex Camera 16mm
Anyone else here thinks Femme Fatale (2002) is his best film to date ?
Oh, be nice.

He wasn’t that bad it’s just Brian doesn’t seem to really enjoy or react to these things too well lol
Then how come an endless list of stars are happy to come on his show, not once but multiple times? Perhaps it's just De Palma who's terrible at interviews?
I would like DePalma more if he was better looking.
Great interview!
