  • How to Install Roof Rails on a Sprinter Van | Budget-Friendly OEM Alternative
This is the first installment in a 3-part series that covers everything we've installed on our Sprinter's roof. The other two videos cover MaxxFan installations and our 525 Watt Solar Install that you can view here:
MaxxFan Installation: • How to Install a MaxxF...
525 Watt Solar Install: • Easy, Turn-Key Sprinte...
Today in our van conversion/van build series, we install budget-friendly roof rails on our Sprinter Van. These roof rails are a lower cost alternative to the pricier roof rails offered by Mercedes.
These van roof rails are also a LOW-COST solution to much pricier roof racks. They can be used to mount solar panels, an awning, or exterior lighting. We used them to install 3 x 175 watt solar panels (amzn.to/3rLBsfm) mounted using Direct Mount Towers (ebay.us/8oHPHf)
We walk through our Sprinter van roof rail installation step-by-step, including the rails we ordered, tools we use, and what we learned at the end of the video.

Installing the same roof rail system in our 170 (black) Springer tomorrow. I spray painted my rails with black rust oleum paint for fun and just added (unnecessary) rust prevention. Forgot to make my notes on which rail was A,B, or C until watching this video so hopefully it will show through!

We also used VanTech roof tracks instead of the Mercedes ones. Although I ended up finding out that we actually paid more for VanTech than what the OEM ones would have been! I don't know if you looked into getting them from the dealership but it would have been cheaper for us. I am fine with it though. We spent enough on the van, i feel okay spreading the love around to other people ;)

Nice job. That area reminds me of North Idaho where my folks live.

Nice detailed van build guys and we really enjoy it thanks for sharing all the tips, just one thing have you used any spring washer underneath? I guess is necessary on movable setup to use spring washers too.

would the sprinter frame hold weight if say we added rail frames, the perpendicular rails to hold solar panels as well as rails that extend past the width of the sprinter for a hammock/ drying clothes

I love your attention to detail on your videos, so thank you! I just got my van and need to add roof rails so your video was super helpful and makes me feel better about the process. I have a Sprinter 170EXT. According to Vantech their rails are made for the 170 length. Is your van a 170EXT? If so, were the standard Vantech (A, B, C) rails long enough? Thank you in advance for your help.

Did u drill in the extra holes in the roof at the ends?

That track system from Vantech is the most expensive type. The most budget friendly is the galvanized steel u-tube track used in building. It does not look nice but once you cover with solar panels, it does not matter. Beside noone go up there to look after build.

Wondering what is the purpose of installing a sub floor, and taking out the original floor?
