The kids robbing the woman was not a flaw. That's not the right word. That's more of a gripe that you have with the movie. The robbery scene established who the kids were and what the neighborhood was and it made the movie better. Knowing that even these fucked up delinquents could become heroes; that's awesome in my opinion. Also, this review is old as fuuuuuuuck lol. Stuckmann's channel has changed so much .
+Maddiox3 Exactly, if the kids hadn't been complete assholes at the beginning, Moses' sacrifice at the end would have meant nothing at all. It's ultimately a movie about him confronting his problems and assuming responsibility.
Agreed. It's definitely not a flaw. I mean..people praise _Game of Thrones_ for making us hate Jaime Lannister and then pulling a 180 and making us love his character. Isn't that what _Attack the Block_ did with these kids..? Making the audience hate a character then making them love that same character is VERY hard to pull off. And _Attack the Block_ pulled it off with a _group_ of teenagers. That's an incredible feat.
I still want to know how the producers of Star Wars saw a lead character, with an American accent, being played by a Londoner, only really known for this movie. I think it's wonderful - he's a terrific actor.
Super old comment, but I'm going to tackle this: The reason it's a flaw is that you struggle to relate or care about the characters through most of the movie. They do redeem themselves by the end, but that's too late. It's more enjoyable the second time you watch it for that reason; however, it's a major flaw for a first time watch. If anything, the plot points that make you care about them should've come way sooner. I really wouldn't have cared if all of them died in the movie even past the midpoint.
The whole point was that the kids are bad because life is bad to them. It's just the way London chav culture works. Kids are poor, they have a bad reputation of crime anyway and then they decide that if that's what society says they are it's what they have to be. This film showed their side and showed that their lives weren't all that great. Moses was only 15 and he lived with his uncle who "comes and goes but mostly goes". It shows that they're not evil by nature, but that their situation has nurtured them that way.
I was going to write a comment, but you took the words right out of my mouth. I saw this movie a couple years ago on cable and was happy to find out John Boyega was starring in the new Star Wars movie. I went and checked a few different reviews and they all mention the same thing, that these kids are so unlikable. Some of the movie critics just don't get it. The director has us rooting for all of the main characters after 20 of 30 minutes.
guyguyga1 let's do an experiment raise your child the way these children were raised and I'll raise mine a normal way and well see that a person's situation and way of growing up does dictate their actions futures
Thank you, this movie was specifically set up that way so you could see the character arc, that they were a product of they're environment. Absentee parents, single family homes, drug use, a bad neighborhood, poor role models, no guidance and lackadaisical parenting. Yet the reviewer takes none of this into context. The fact that this reviewer missed that shows his own bias. Movies like THE GODFATHER, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE and the TV show THE SOPRANOS are full of despicable characters doing vile things, but are revered and looked at as classics. Nothing the kids do in this movie is anywhere as heinous as the characters do in those movies, but look how harshly they're judged, no slack or sympathy or understanding is given. It's racism rearing it's ugly head. Go to IMDB and read the reviews and see how vitriolic and racist they are. It's clear double standard given to troubled blacks as opposed to troubled whites.
@@adriancastro3899 yeah looking back at this 8 years later it's clear that Chris at this point still had a long way to grow as a reviewer. Doesn't seem to me like he was willing for his perceptions of certain types of people (kids from deprived backgrounds, where specifically black or not) to be challenged by the film. Film is supposed to make you empathise with characters who represent people you might otherwise not connect with and stay ignorant towards in real life.
The main thing that Chris Stuckmann disliked about this film is actually a strong point, in my opinion: the fact that these bunch of London kids (yes, it's set in London) were from a poor, deprived background, involved in petty crime. As a Londoner I really liked the realism. A bunch of anti-heroes became heroes. I particularly loved the ending.
Frauke Schmidt i was just thinking this. The fact that you see that these kids be that mean and that they are not street kids with the heart of gold (yet) tgey are truly kids who grew up in a tough neighboorhood and survive in it ... and now they have to survive this ... I think it was dynamic and refreshing to see those kids actually be harsh and tough and then fight for something good ... it was a great very clever and fun film IMo

I didn't find it hard to like them because I understood right away that the punks were just kids. 15 year olds in a bad neighborhood . Also they were freaking funny
You're not suppose to like the kids in the beginning that is what the movie portrays. You grow to like them as the movie goes on. This movie is much better than super 8
This movie is one of the highlights of the decade- I don't mean to say it's one of these indelible master strokes of cinematic virtuosity, far from it. It's down and dirty, fun, and more importantly clever, piece of pulp from a really talented young filmmaker. To me this movie will develop a reputation similar to a movie like Edgar G. Ulmer's 'Detour', an exemplary genre flick that was released to mostly critical fanfare but almost zero box office success; and in the years since it's initial release will only continue to grow in respect and adoration. Although I do take issue with your dismissal of these kids in the beginning of the film, that's the entire point of the movie- that these maladjusted youths are really lost and lonely, just trying to set fires to let the world know they exist. You get to know each an every character to, by good old fashioned character quirks and beats. The young actors are allowed to take these standard beats and do something interesting with them.
You missed the point of the film. Yes, the characters at the beginning aren't but has the film goes on Cornish reveals why they are the way they are, they don't choose to be this way but their environment has bred them like this and they have no other option but behave this way in order to survive (best seen when she goes into Moses' bedroom). It's a clever look at society but might not be relateable to Americans.
Ugh, plenty of people grow up in REALLY shitty situations and don't CHOOSE to victimize people and be criminals. I know because I grew up in poverty, real poverty and I didn't like the shit. So instead of being weak minded and accepting my situation I soldiered on and made my way out. Giving people a pass because they have a hard life is just being an enabler. They need to be held responsible just like anyone else. We can't lower standards because someone had it rough. Just ask any one of them if breaking the law and victimizing people is right or wrong. They know better
I love this movie! I personally give it an A. I feel like the m being street punks wasn't a flaw, but helped even more with their development and making them even more likable. in the end because of how they mature and when you come to understand how these kids are a sort of product of their environment. I think the film would've been a little different without that first scene,
I finally got the chance to finish this movie the other day and man I was surprised as fuck by it. Its easily one of my favorite movies of all time and I IMO and my opinion only deserving of an A+.
Underrated movie! I get the point about some people saying the don't feel any sympathy for thoses kids because they rob innocent people, but what's the point watching gangsters movies? They also steal and murder people.
Unfortunately, the USA can be a very narcissistic and myopic country and Americans can seem quite stupid when it comes to understanding other societies.

Would you have imagined that the actor potraying Moses was going to become one of the main characters on STAR WARS! AND the girl would become the 13th Doctor! MY GOD this movie had some mayor talent!
The thing about them being punk kids, as far as I was aware that was intentional and they were supposed to be like that. The idea is that their experiences force them to adapt and grow out of their more childish behaviours and become more serious, if still kids
You have to live in London or any rundown town in England to appreciate the punk kids. I think its a cultural thing and only Londoners would understand.
lol, this is so weird seeing an early review of his. He seems like one of those guys that went straight from boy to 30-something man with no in-between phase, lol.
Chris is wrong on this one the point of showing them robbing the woman at the beginning is to show you how sucker up people can change. That was the genius of the director he made you care about them and even cheer for them by the time it was over.
This completely kicks SUPER 8's ass by a mile. This feels like the movie that Super 8 should have been. I really don't understand how you could dislike the characters by the end. That was one of the main aspects of the film in that we see them at their lowest point and then they change, learn, grow as kids, and we root for them and love their comraderie that they share. I don't kmow if you grew up in a bad neighborhood, but kids aren't punks by nature. They were bred that way due to the lives they were forced to live. It wasn't half the movie. It was the first 10-15 min tops. Also having them do that early in the movie was perfect because it gave them character.
