The fact that they [adults---over a decade later] are deciphering riffs Jazmine performed at 11 years old is a testament to the power & skill of her voice. Truly both a science & a gift to that. Fantastic series!
Wow, now Brittney is the first ever Black Glinda! I was wondering why her name and face was so familiar then I remembered her belts, so round for a Glinda! She was amazing!
Brittany just does it naturally you can tell by her speed she killllls it 👏👏👏obviously Natalie kills it 👏👏 but technically she does it whereas Britney has it naturally
At 11? She tha Goat. Ain't no damn way you can do thise complex runs that adults they are trained have to break down. Forget about her as an adult, they boat has sailed..amazing
You are a genius! Besides your incredible ear and voice, what are you using to isolate each section of the riffs? Your method is the most concise and accurate and real of all the ones I've seen on the net. Your voice is beautiful and soulful and I say again you are a genius! Thank you for showing us how to do the work. You are the true teacher of how to riff., yours was the clearest and most effective way of learning to riff. I'll have to find a way of slowing down some of the really fast passages on the cd in order to play them on the piano, but I love the way you break it down into smaller phrases, that is so intelligent, and fast too!
I'm really mad at myself for only just now having discovered this channel. I feel like the void in my RUclips heart has now been filled! Do you take requests?
Love this channel, a great resource for singers. That being said, I doubt Jazmine Sullivan used this technique to create these vocal runs. Some people just have this kind of vocal control. Suprisingly, Donny Hathaway was probably the most skillful, second to Stevie Wonder. Kim Burrell is very dynamic and has runs that I don't think I've heard anyone imitate. Jazmine gets a lot of her vocal phrasing from Kim (who doesn't) but she actually has more range than Kim. Fantasia deserves an honorable mention but I don't think I've heard anyone come close to Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughn. This is ONLY vocal runs...not singers
+manb4war Its just an instinctive kind of thing. Nobody plans their riffs and runs like this but it is easy to get into a pattern and repeat the same ones over and over. The singers you mentioned never do that. Back in the Ella and Sarah Vaughn days, they weren't using that many riffs and runs, but just vocal quality made them great. I don't listen to any gospel because they generally overdo it with the runs but Jazmine Sullivan, Beyonce, Keke Wyatt, Fantasia, and Brandy, to name a few, really know how to add them in without becoming overwhelming.
***** Huh? Ella and Sarah no vocal riffs? You're not listening to enough of their music Ella is the queen of scat and her control is impeccable. The style doesn't really call for it but she's a great exhibitionist. Sarah not so much but her vocal ability is unsurpassed by very few. If you don't listen to gospel, Jazmine, Beyonce and Keke, Fantasia I imagine are rare and unusual talents. Ask them all who they admire and they will all say Kim Burrell, The Clark Sisters, etc; and that's just the women. Most of them started singing gospel.
+manb4war For some reason, I was thinking Etta instead of Ella. You're absolutely right. I do know that the vocal style comes from gospel, even though I'm not necessarily a fan of gospel.
***** You're depriving yourself. Not all gospel is great but the foundation of all modern vocal styles come from gospel. I don't mean just african american either, you can hear the gospel style in the old country music as well. Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn all had gospel styles.
I love that Natalie Weiss loves and respect a talent like Jasmine Sullivan. I also love how she turns something rather abstract into something you can actually break down, understand, and attempt
Natalie, these videos are ridic. I'm a BFA MT, and I've never been a riffer, but watching these videos has helped me figure out how to riff - that I can actually riff - and I just did a performance of What Would I Do from The Wiz using the run from Halo that you broke down, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Thank you soooo much, you're amazing and fierce and I love you.
i'm so upset that i'm just now finding this channel! its so amazing, as a trained musician myself, to watch other trained musicians take popular "everyday" songs and break it down and show the music theory behind it. i am so beyond impressed with this! definitely about to binge watch the rest of these videos!
Oh my god! I saw that video of Jazmine when I was singing "Home" a couple years ago and thought I would NEEEEEVER be able to do that. Like, it was crazy!
I love your breakdowns I can't tell you how many times I've been wanting help with riffs. I can do it but the way you break it down makes it so much easier. I love your channel you are Amazing!!!!!
I was at that show in Boise in Sept. It was AMAZING!!!!! I just wish I would have come when you were in the lobby!! :) You two are brilliant. I gave up.
I love you for this! I always was intimidated by riffs and kinda belittled my own potential of mastering them. You made it so easy to learn them! I didnt know I could do them♡
after watching these videos, i'm pretty positive that waving around your hand absolutely helps with riffing. it's like magic! wingardium leva-rifftastic!
Holy smokes! You are so pleasant to watch and listen to!!! Do you have and episodes with Brandy riff training? She leaves me. I can't keep up with her.
Nathalie! Will you PLEASE break down the riff that Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi do at 0:19-0:22 sec in their version of "Happy Birthday" to Jazmine Sullivan? Thank you!
NATALIE!! SHE IS THE FIRST BLACK GLINDA OMGEEE SHE DESERVES IT I FIRST WATCHED HER HERE AND SHE IS AMAZING MY HEART JUMPED WHEN I SAW HER AS GLINDA SHE IS PHENOMENAL I LOVE YOU BOTH!!
This is my favorite one! My brother just showed me all of your videos, and I am SO amazed!!! Thank God for you!! I told my brother that I wish you lived around me so you could teach me voice lessons! :) Anyway, Jazmine Sullivan is famous for her extremely difficult riffs, so could you do one of her riffs in the song "in love with another man?" I believe the riff is when she says "love" between 1:50-1:55 in the song! Hope you are able to do this one! Thanks, you're awesome!!
Omg I saw that video where you sang with Pentatonix, let me tell you, you are amazing. Those riffs you did in that song were just impossible. I want to learn so bad.
The fact that they [adults---over a decade later] are deciphering riffs Jazmine performed at 11 years old is a testament to the power & skill of her voice. Truly both a science & a gift to that. Fantastic series!
It shows you how underrated Jazmine Sullivan really is. There are 2 grown women learning the riffs of her performance at 11 years old!
+Doc Man yes!!!!!!!!! I agree, why isnt she on the very top? I dont know
+ulrike Haller Image and honestly the majority do not favor r&b like they did in my generation
to me it is not even about a special kind of music, she is just an amazing singer, she could sing any style, she could sing opera, too, i m sure
... at an elementary school production of the wiz. like.
Jazmine sullivan sung this when she was 11 years old. That is pure talent.
Yeah sooo effortlessly
Who else just tried to sing the riff with them, and immediately regretted it lmao
Christen Victoria exactly lol
meee lmao
Wow, now Brittney is the first ever Black Glinda! I was wondering why her name and face was so familiar then I remembered her belts, so round for a Glinda! She was amazing!
This channel should be called Run Science
YES!!!!!
8 years later and I still know the riffs 😂👌🏼
5:19... Her face when she listens to how fast jazmine does the run 😂😂😂😂😭😭
just goes to show how much of a powerhouse Jazmine Sullivan was at such a young age.
Brittany just does it naturally you can tell by her speed she killllls it 👏👏👏obviously Natalie kills it 👏👏 but technically she does it whereas Britney has it naturally
I've been practicing along with this video. I'm getting there!!
wish I could say the same :(
@@kaseyfelixx I've been doing a lot of vocal exercises for runs and can definitely tell the difference. We'll get it boo!
I love how every time Natalie hears the 2nd riff she does little head moves. It is like she can't resist.
Can we take a moment to remind ourselves.... She was ONLY 11 when she sang that song!!! #jazmineisthetruth
I love how scared Brittany looks hearing the runs when she just did them lol. U guys are amazing!
History-making queen!!! This was always one of my favorite episodes too!
John Schell YES! GOSH I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS HER UNTIL NATALIE POSTED ON HER INSTAGRAM
At 11? She tha Goat. Ain't no damn way you can do thise complex runs that adults they are trained have to break down. Forget about her as an adult, they boat has sailed..amazing

The thing about jazmine as well is that she does that shit effortlessly like she doesn't even have to think it just comes naturally.
Britney 's face when she initially hears all 3 riffs like "she he sang like this at 11??????" lmaoooo
I live for that lol
thanks for makin me me realize i was missing SO many notes
Hey natalie, thank you so much for this series
I'm really mad at myself for only just now having discovered this channel. I feel like the void in my RUclips heart has now been filled! Do you take requests?

Maybe. I can only tolerate religion in small doses. However, I want to start studying more types of music so I will take your advice. Thanks!
I love that Natalie Weiss loves and respect a talent like Jasmine Sullivan. I also love how she turns something rather abstract into something you can actually break down, understand, and attempt

i love the 2nd riff!!! so good
omg Brittney is sooo good💟💟💟💟
She grew up to be Glinda on the Bway. So awesome.
I recommend the amazing slow downer app for slowing down riffs. Also allows you to loop the riff. Then you can speed it up faster and faster.
This is the best thing ever.
Omg I saw that video where you sang with Pentatonix, let me tell you, you are amazing. Those riffs you did in that song were just impossible. I want to learn so bad.
Even if my voice could do these things, I don't have the memory to learn these. At least not as quick as them.
Yall are so good at this!!
I love this channel! Thank you so much. 😘😘
