Hey all, this is an old Caltrain ride from last year. Rest assured, I just filmed another ride in late March 2022, so you can expect a new Caltrain update video *soon*!!!
Hey Four foot. Thanks for this. We spoke a while back on a live stream. Reminder: I live walking distance to the Hayward BART MX Facility. I am close to the UP and the abandoned WP right of way. (1) If you want to fly over this route, let me know. (2) This configuration will NOT work. You can not have CHSR and Cal Trains co-exist on two tracks. It must be four tracked.
Nice! I would love to do a flyover, but with SFO, SJC and Moffett, I doubt I could get much footage lol. And no the blended system is certainly not ideal. 4 tracks would be ideal, but way into the future, I believe a mainly underground HSR route similar to the new Kowloon-Shenzhen link will be warranted, with a northern extension out of the STC across the bay. At least that’s my dream lol. I’m definitely going to talk about HSR in my upcoming Caltrain construction update!
@@TheFourFoot Just so ya know, the "standard" bay tour flies over most of the CalTrain ROW, and goes right over the "approach" (not that they're ever used for such) end of the 01 runways at SFO. You could definitely get some decent footage from the air if that commenter took you up.
Electrified railways in the US! I though there was an article in the constitution forbidding efficient high speed public transport? Possibly an amendment then?
I hope I live to see the day where CalTrain is fully electrified, grade separated, and connected to the Transbay Terminus. I'll then look back to this video to see how far we've come!
The line is looking great with all the Electrification taking place . And I see on another post some of the new units are on the way From Utah for use on it .

1) The Peninsula line REALLY needs to be quadruple tracked if the governmental powers that be are serious about running CalTrain and CAHSR trains on the same rails, regardless of what any of the NIMBY’s say. 2) Would be kinda nice if the line didn’t have any wooden ties, and only had concrete ones. Concrete ties have long since proven themselves to be a better option over the years, even if they are of a higher cost then wooden ones. Also, if you’re building a modern railroad, you’re probably using concrete ties, so there’s that. 3) As much as I may like the Southern Pacific, they REALLY screwed up in 1974 when they demolished their station at Third and Townsend. The current one at Fourth and King is, well, pitiful in comparison to its predecessor. It’d be nice to see Third and Townsend rebuilt, but I highly doubt it will be, sadly. ‘Twas an easy to look at station that one. 4) Pipe dream of mine, but it’d be really awesome to see the old Bayshore and Taylor yards and associated maintenance facilities, in SF and LA respectively, rebuilt alongside the Third and Townsend street station and a revived Coast Daylight operated with all the remaining equipment from back in the day with new build stuff thrown in to make things complete. Will probably happen NEVER, but a guy can dream, and I’ve got plenty of time to do just that. 5) You know you’re a history nut when you watch cab rides of a line and can hardly think about anything but old films you’ve seen of said line.
Thank you for posting this amazing video. I am nearing completion of a book on Southern Pacific's San Francisco Terminal District (San Bruno north via the Bayshore Cutoff and the original mainline via Ocean View) from the 1860s through merger in 1996.It is now at over 275 pages, and counting. Having spent so many long hours looking at photos and maps of the "then and when" of this area, I was blown away by how it has changed, and frankly for the better. I mean I knew it had changed, and I had of course ridden CalTrain but this video from the head makes it clear. Aside from the graffiti, the City, the railroad and everything is clean and new. All this was just starting when I will end the book, with the closing and sale of SP's general office on Market Street. End of an era....
Thanks for this video. When should electric train operation begin? How fast is driving on the track at the moment and does the speed change when driving electrically? Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven
Has the fencing reduced trespassing on the right of way? Or is it same-old, same-old? Nice video, it has been several years since I rode the line. Maybe again in the next year or so. Certainly after electrification. Wire-heads rule!
I have a Question why do American Locomotive Drivers/Engineers are forever sounding their Horns ? , as a person from the bottom of the Pacific or operators do a quick blast before a Grade Crossing or Platform and the same as they leave a Station . Because if they ever got a position here in New Zealand I think they would have to go through a Rehab course to wean them off blasting the horn so often .
It’s federal law that engineers sound their horns for 15-20 seconds prior to occupying a public grade crossing, unless the crossing has enhanced safety features that allow it to be a “quiet zone,” where only the bell is to be rung through the crossing. Additionally, many passenger railroads require engineers to blow their whistle while approaching stations where they won’t be stopping.
For a road crossing the whistle is 2 longs, a short and a final long. There are other standard whistle patterns to let people and crew members know what the engineer plans to do.
Loved the video! Hated the snoud! And being an occupational hygienist I really háve to ask: Do you guys have hearing protection from the noise of that freaking horn and bell? (Both of those things should be a fellony to sound them at all! Let alone, like, alle the time like you guys have to do...)
The Tempe, Arizona Street car opened up on May 20th. Come out and visit sometime. Bring your drone, more work is going on with the Valley Metro extensions through South Phoenix and MetroCenter. Link: ruclips.net/video/U2KhwRrOSxo/видео.html
Dont see how HSR is going to share these tracks... dont see too many spaces for extensive additional track... thats a lot of trains sharing 2-3 tracks all with different speeds/operations... most of the low hanging fruit grade separation has been done, all the remains is super difficult
Why don’t they have express cal 🚆 ? It’s about 9 or 11 hours to get from Southern cal to northern Its only should take 6hours to get there Cal 🚆 needs to rechecked to extend their services to customers for shorter time to get to their destiny it’s 2022!!!

7:30 seeing a 4 track electrified mainline outside of the NEC in the US is amazing. Definitely gives me hope

For sure. I might have even travelled down to Pueblo to see the train they were testing there…lol
I miss your videos. I really hope you start to make them again.

Born and raised in Mountain View but now live in the UK. Seeing this video makes me nostalgic :)
Shoutout the 650!
I could see that overhead electrification is gradually taking shape in most areas of this CalTrain.
Slowly but surely lol

A really excellent quality video. I'm amazed at how sharp it was -- and how clean the window was, too!
wya bro I’ve been waiting for an update on the corridor?
Thank you so much for putting the station names when you get there. I swear you're the only cab ride videos that do that
We aims to please…
I thought this was running off the overhead wires until I saw the portion without wires lol

Are you ok? Four months since last video…
53:26 is where the recent collision occurred. Looking forward to updates from you again, welcome back.
Thanks! On my recent trip I’ve got footage of the track still missing in that spot and the wrecked train!
You okay man? Just checking in on you as it’s been a year since you uploaded. Hope you’re doing well!
When will we see new videos
Can you make an Update on the Purple Line for 2025 or 2026 please 💜

Welcome back!
Took this exact route to head to a Giants game from SJ. Train Pulls up just 2 blocks away from the stadium. Beats driving 10000000%
The chik-dung chik-dung of the bell in the head-end car is exactly the same as it was 35 years ago,
welcome back!
Couple of retired AEM7's parked at San Francisco. More cab rides when you can, please.
Yessir love it

Watching the concrete ties is hypnotizing!
Sweet view!
When’s the next video??
I see the installed/will install overhead conductor rails in the tunnels 👍🏻
Wish we had this up in the chico/yuba sutter area that connected to sacramento..
6 months… umm maybe something happened?
So I am gathering that these rail lines are being upgraded to run on electricity because there looks to be new overhead being installed?

Is this the normal speed? I thought it was slower Caltrain! It is good to see the electrification advancing.
So many grade crossings, I don't know how that would be ever fixed. Anyways can't wait for the updated video
To be precise you should have done one from Gilroy to SF hahaha, I've always just done Tamien to SF.
I know, I know lol
Which cab car is this?
First comment! Great video
I am interested in taking over your RUclips channel, I am ready to make a gesture... Thank you in advance
Come back
When do they expect to complete the electrifying of the line and when do they plan to have trains powered by electricity operating?
Going by 2 publications the 1st are on their way from Utah .
I’ll go into much more detail in an upcoming video, but somewhere late 2023 is the goal…

@@RTSRafnex2 Thank you for that update .
Are you April Fooling us on the date it was filmed? cause I have been looking for more recent videos on the progress on the wiring
Definitely not! It was filmed back in august, but I’ve got a new run I filmed a couple weeks ago, so stay tuned for a full construction update!

I feel bad for the two guys missing the train
Yeah with hour headways (when this was shot) it really stinks!
