It's actually grammatically correct. It's called "historical present", in which the present tense can be used to talk about an historical fact even if it technically happened in the past :)
"There was no other church". What about Orthodox? XD
"there was INITIALLY no other form of that religion" the greek orthodox church is a very late invention.
There were also the Orthodox and Coptic churches -
