- Mcdoubles back again with a brand new video and today I want to go over the Pros and Cons of Turtle WoW and Duskhaven, compare and contrast the two servers, and help you decide which one you should play in 2023.
Remember that this is just my own subjective take, and it is no-doubt going to show my biases towards one thing or another at the time of this upload. I did level at least 1 character to max level on both servers and made it a point to try all of the custom/unique content. Make sure to check out the comment section for more peoples opinions!
Here's a quick summary of each server:
🐢Turtle WoW🐢
Original Vanilla client, capped at 60, set in the original Vanilla world. Some new custom talents and spells, many new custom zones, quests, dungeons, and even two new races to choose from that stick close to the original Vanilla "feel". New raids are on the horizon, new custom bgs are already in game, and a large population of over 4k peak less than a week ago as of this videos upload date.
🦇Duskhaven🦇
3.3.5 WoTLK Client, capped at 60, set in the original Vanilla world. Many new custom classes like Tinker, Demonhunter, and soon Bard. Multiple talent changes and spell changes that use Wrath of the Lich King talents and abilities as a baseline. New specs for classes like Melee Priest and Melee Hunter, few custom zones/subzones, many custom quests, a new raid known as Azshara Crater, and M+ dungeons.
General Information on both servers:
Both servers are Cross Faction, which means people from both factions can group together
Both servers have a War Mode option to enable PvP, but are PvE servers
Both servers offer a Hardcore mode and/or Ironman mode
Both servers are part of the Vanilla Plus genre, even if they're on opposite sides of the spectrum. Some people do consider Duskhaven to be a funserver instead of a Vanilla+ server.
Duskhaven is seen as a more extreme version of the Vanilla Plus archetype, even going as far as for some to call it a fun server, and Turtle WoW is a more tame version that is trying to stay as close to the original Vanilla as it can while still being custom.

edit: While Duskhaven won out at the time, Duskhaven had a lot of hype behind it and the community thought they would deliver big on this with some major polish to their creative server. Sadly, 3 months later, this did not pan out, and the server sits at ~100 people online down from a lag-pushing peak of somewhere between 1500-2000 players. I hope Duskhaven pulls it back, but with all honesty, you are best going to Turtle WoW as of this edit.

Here are some things worth adding to the pros and con list based on my talks in the comment section:
1. Turtle WoW also has dual spec for a high price - pro, even if the price is higher than Duskhaven
2. Duskhaven recently released the BWL patch - neutral, doesn't really matter as its the latest content and there's still multiple raid tiers to go. MC/Azshara crater progression is still relevant.
3. Turtle WoW only having limited class and talent changes is actually a pro to people who prefer an authentic Vanilla game, and is only a con as described in the video if you want more changes to class and talents to open up more playstyles.

Mcdoubles, do you like questing, lore, reading quests, etc? Or do you feel like you just want to get through questing as you see it as a block towards endgame?
I think there are two players, one that likes to quest, level, enjoy lore, and the other that likes to pvp, and get to endgame fast.
I don’t think either of these two servers are for pvpers, and there’s a reason as we can see failed servers, faction imbalances, like we saw in Classic.
It comes down to Turtle for the leveling experience, or Duskhaven for the end game. But what happens to Duskhaven when it has progressed to Naxx? Will it still be active like Turtle’s leveling experience?

Duskhaven feels more like "Wrath Of The Vanilla"

🐢 Just started on Turtle so of course I'll pick it as my go-to realm atm. I really like the slow gameplay personally. Gear lasts for longer while leveling, and as HC you are encourged to spend time doing your professions, as they are a source of gear upgrades or consumables. After doing almost everything in Classic WoW I've grown tired of the zoom zoom gotta go fast, level 60 is the only content mentality. I just wanna sit down, relax, have fun, and enjoy the journey.
I don't disagree with you at all. But this could apply to either server. Both have hard-core and reduced exp rate modes with level 60 cap. If anything Duskhaven would be better for what you described because you can have 3 professions which would give you more craft able options while taking your time leveling.

@@konnlaaednat8126 Nah, Duskhaven's hardcore option isn't as risky as Turtle wow, you don't lose your characters, HP and damage values have changed so tagging 3 mobs in Turtle is the same death sentence as in regular vanilla whereas in Duskhaven it isn't.
Having 3 professions just makes everything faster and easier, which is the complete opposite to what he's saying.
Been on turtle WoW for a couple weeks and just started duskhaven today. I love classic vanilla but with the limited playtime i have I think I can experience more content on Duskhaven so I’m picking that for now.
Duskhaven is not vanilla. If you seek the vanilla experience, Duskhaven is not it.
@@SuperSinSlayer Level cap is 60 and set in the vanilla world. There is still class uniqueness despite wrath class design (which is way better than vanilla for a lot of classes). I'd say its vanilla+. The plus bringing quality of life and better class design and balance. Works for me.
Turtle. Love the teams philosophy and keeping it lore accurate while adding so much.
Well the new High Elf capital seems to be where the harbor in WC III TFT was that Arthas departed from to Northrend unless my memory decives me. That seems kind of odd. I think there was actually a Stratholme harbor planned back in the day. If I am wrong please correct me. It has been some time.
That aside I somewhat do not like the designe choice of the capital. I had perfered a more ranger village aproach in memory of the og WC III highelfen models. Both for the buildings as well as the race and equipment models. It also seems a lot less polished than most other custom areas. But I am glad to see a server that gave me my High Elf Alliance Race I asked from Blizzard for years.

Touching on your concerns regarding longevity on Duskhaven is more valid then you might realise.
Noxx had/have a TBC server and it was very good! But after 1500+ hours played on it (with very low pop), it got to a point where all the added custom content more or less got out of hand.
The core playerbase tried to address the issues but got little to no feedback which ended in alot of us sadly left.
Hopefully though, there has been lessons learned, meaning the custom content will be supervisioned aswell as integrated more carefully.
Noxx is a genius in many ways, but sometimes it goes overboard sadly.
(If you're reading this, please bring back TBC as it was around -21/22 Noxx, it was at such a good state - bugs included.) ;)

Great Video Mcdoubles. Really good content on these 2 very fun realms.
Games like Total Annihilation and Baldurs gate 2, 25 years ago had soundtracks that accelerated and combat and slowed down based on whether you were in building mode or a a combat mode, exploring or fighting ... so the music didn't get repetitive.
... Boy you really just felt like saying something.
I got brain damage from Kalonline 10sec repetetive game music playing 8h a day, I still sometimes hear that music playing in my head... fck that

not even a question - turtle for vanilla + experience, duskhaven for retail like instace based game
I never played on Turtle, but for Duskhaven I can say that it has lag problems, random disconnects and server restarts, which can often ruin dungeon run/raid or whatever you are doing. I like new classes and I cant wait to try bard, also I like extra zones/quests and rebalance of classes. Seeing the comments here, I am going to check on Turtlewow, looks cool from what I have read.

after testing out both with chars at max lvl i have to stay with turtle wow, duskhaven is awesome dont get me wrong but theres still much work to do many bugs and they have to balance the classes asap i wasnt really a fan of the mythic + stuff and the gear u get there it is a bit to much custom and felt cheap to me :/ but i am sure if Noxx gets some more help on the server it will turn out great! but for now turtle it is!
turtle wow sounded amazing but the Un adjustable exp rate and very toxic staff scared me off of ever trying it sadly as it prolly did for most pserver players
@@brianwill5493 i never experienced the staff as toxic :O fast ticket response and immediatly help if a quest buggs out. but yea every server has some black sheeps in the staff nothing new still 100x times better than any whitekidney server :D i agree with you about the exp rates i hop they will do something in that direction.
May i suggest a video topic: Mods like vainillatweaks, vainillafixes, DXVK. It really helps with microstutters, QoL and general performance.

I have a 60 in Turtle, now I'm leveling a character on Duskhaven. So i don't have a opinion yet which setveris better.

I just started on Turtle. The new client does sound good, but it doesn't feel like vanilla. Plus, Turtle has High Elves. I wanted that in 2004 but never got it. Now I am happy :D
Yooooo I was the tank in the Azshara raid :D. Man, that was a learning experiance. We managed to take down all the bosses except Furblog, his orbs bugged and we couldn't get to him again :(. Cool raid nonetheless, I have never seen that part of Azeroth before :D.
I love duskhaven but I don't know if I could really call it vanilla plus. It's more like wotlk+ in a vanilla world. Vanilla plus should add some content and quality of life but not to the extent where it becomes like wotlk or retail
Turtle. I get the idea of "I want to get to max lvl and raid with a guild, that's what the game is about" but I think the leveling part and exploring the world is my preferred experience and the fact that there are new zones makes this an instawin. But I do like where the new classes of Duskhaven are going.

Is the Duskhaven really fresh(1 week atm of the video)? Because on their website, there is a timeline showing it's almost 5 mothes online(MC opened 9th of November)

Just joined duskhaven yesterday. Looks very good. I prefer the lvling speed and I like the idea of having new classes and newer talent trees. Wish there was a pvp scene and hope the pvp picks up.
That's my main issue with duskhaven you sitting hours for bg queues. In the other hand turtle queues are faster but most of the times you one shoot from naxx geared players in other words you can't win both of the servers need pvp love from the developers

I started turtle wow a few weeks ago but duskhaven sounds dopeeee. Think I’m gonna switch.
There is a Warlords Of Draenor texture pack for Turtle wow. Voiced quest addon is also working.

Love turtle wow, only Vanilla+ id ever accept. But man i wished they went to a WOTLK client.
Not sure if it matters or not. But Humans still retain their rep bonuses, and the talents have 'hidden' capstones and Im unsure if they are bugs or not, but a lot of things that would be talented later are just baseline like Second Wind for Warriors just being baseline (and a talent option at the same time) or Regrowth while staying in Cat Form (which would normally be a capstone later on).
There's a working turtle wow HD patch, it has some quirks but its better than other ones made for 1.12 that lag the crap out or give runtime errors after a while. The bugs that might happen are wierd textured faces and such but very rarely I've seen it.
It visually helps A LOT especially on the mounts part. And as a hunter, the hunter epic weapons look a billion times better.
Where do I find this?
seing the slow lvling on Turtle wow as a con can be debatable and up to each of their own. Some people really enjoy llving and once they hit lvl 60 they dont know what to do and simply just raid log. I would argue that Classic is allmost all about the lvling experience and not reaching lvl 60... hopefully one day that will change on Duskhaven and Turtle wow with more implemented custom endgame content and systems.

Hello Mcdoubles and chat whats your unbiased opinions about turtle wow pvp? im a casual gamer those days with kids and job and as much i love to i dont have enough time to spend like back in the day for wow and im worried if is a waste of time. My mai concern is some people was telling me if you hit max level the bgs are un playable because is full of players with naxx gear or other pve gear and im kinda confused as well the pvp rank start from level 10 or max level? Thanks in advance for any reply i would really appreciate it
that's kinda why most of these servers fail they are low rate exp so not many players come only the elitists mainly and some use it just to enjoy the leveling process on so they dont attract new players to do lower tiered raids or dungeons high rates however make everyone even casual players willing to re level new chars even servers like retro-wow that is instant 60 fun server have a easy progression and catchup mechanics so you can get at least a few piece naxx gear and gear to BG and you can outskill a full naxx player if you play it right sometimes its still mostly a stomp though at that point and it can be a stomp if you see op players on mainly mages or holy pallys or rogues/druids who flag run for fun lol

Like the video, however when you mention con about the graphics on Turtle Wow. I think using the Troll with the model that was messed up because of the HD patch was unfair.
I didn't even remember that it was because of a bug with the HD patch. But honestly, the point still stands, the graphics are definitely worse than Duskhaven

I tried Duskhaven and the the DDoS attacks were nearly constant. It was just insane. When I was playing it i had some fun but it isn't worth the hassle right now. Turtle WoW is a nice pace however and much more my style

A month or so to 60 doesn't feel long at all considering I've been trying to max in osrs for like 5 years now.
Duskhaven doesn't feel like Vanilla+ it feels like WotLK-.
Now I am not saying this is a bad thing. I love WotLK and I came in expecting WotLK and I got WotLK
It is essentially a level 60 twink WotlK server
With all the negatives and positives that come with that.
For example talent trees are insanely boring right now because you can't experiment much with WotLK talent trees but only 51 points. Especially with their added talents they have become even tighter
Dang I have a complete opposite experience on my three 60s right now because there are different playstyles to look at as well. Monks, DH's, Tinkers, 2H Enhancement, Dual Wield Ret, and other similarly powerful additions make it feel fresh and exciting to me. I know what you mean by not being able to effectively go down another tree because you have to dedicate all of your talents to one tree to get that 51 point talent, but I really think that's pretty minor. You couldn't expect much different from original Vanilla, except this one is better.
@@Mcdoubles It is minor but it is about feeling here. This feels like WotLK not like Vanilla.
Or in a way the focus on the best parts of Vanilla while taking all the quality of life and class balance/feel from WotlK.
I think if someone comes into Duskhaven expecting Vanilla feel they will end up dissappointed. But if they expect something like a Vanilla through WotLK they will end up liking it.

since turtle is v+ technically they cant be fully progressed or am i wrong? i mean they could just add a raid after naxx?
Wife as been playing Turtle wow and its basically crashing and locking her pc, just started playing duskhaven but not enough to decide which is better. been taking a break from WOW private servers TBH.
If you feel tired take the break, trust me you don't want to progress while being tired, it leads to much more boredom
Another con for TurtleWoW is that the rules enforcement is very strict, they play favorites with donors and they say they allow appeals, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
If you're dead set on playing there, DO NOT TALK POLITICS IN WORLD CHAT OR NEWCOMERS! They will ban you if they are in the mood to. I got a 3 hour chat ban where I had to serve the sentence in game for 3 real time hours, so I went to the forums to ask why, got forum banned, then noticed I couldn't log in, my friend who I live with couldn't log in even though he hadn't played for a week, so that means I got IP banned and when I tried to use the discord I was told to send an email, immediately got Discord banned upon refreshing discord and my email has not been answered to this day (I sent it on jan 2nd got banned on new years). I think the only reason I can even still log in now, is because my IP has changed. But was there any further communication beyond "you have been muted for 3 hours"? Nope. Absolutely none whatsoever.

Having played in the server for a year now and personally having interacted with GMs i highly doubt that your ban wasnt justified. Also being brand new in a server and going straight into talking politics is not a smart move. 'BEWARE! They are not reasonable.' lol ok, read the rules next time
I have been enjoying Turtle WoW, and the slow progress, but looking forward to DuskHaven. I am just waiting for the launcher because the hoop jumpin will just frustrate me.
Turtle wow was really busy when I went on. I'm getting an old laptop so I can play it in quiet days at work 😮
7:05 equal playing field..... in PvE? i don't understand.... competitive in what sense? the only competition in wow is ranks, and thats in pvp.

You can run bwl on duskhaven already, have seen people with 3 piece t2 as well as bwl weapons. Seems as though it’s mc ony and bwl are available.

I started on turtle wow some days ago and i dont care that it is over 3 years old :D It is awesome :D
I just recently went back to retail after not playing much for years. I have found the controller addon and I enjoy playing that way casually. Have not been able to find a way to play duskhaven with controller which would really sell it for me. I am trying to play with keyboard and mouse again though.
A Razer Naga gaming mouse or any gaming mouse with 12 hotkey's in the thumb area can solve the problem for you!
I have 36 different abilitys in my pink and thumb only since you have a global cooldown with a few spells off the global cooldown you can just use every sec 1 ability.
So i have 12 buttons in my thumb=my lower spell bar, then cntrl+1 to 12=my upper spell bar, then shift+1 to 12= my upper right spell bar.
That means you can run, jump, strafe and do every movement while you are pressing any ability you want(not only youre main abilitys close to qsdz) since other games involve cntrl to crouch or shift to sprint you can assign that in order to select what spell bar you want to use and 1 to 12 in youre thumb stays the same presses then how you would use an ability of youre main hotbar.
So in the end you can just run, jump, circle strafe while youre thumb that otherwise doing nothing on a mouse is pressing the abilitys and if you need other abilitys you just use youre pink to hit cntrl or shift and you use other spells. that's 36 abilitys in 1 pink and 1 thumb!(and stil able to make macros in game so you pop all cd's with 1 button press)

Are you sure Turtle WoW uses the vanillal client? They have the harbour in SW and all the assets reskinned for TBC (high elves)...
To my knowledge they use a very ancient Vanilla client and that it even has specific limitations to it because of their choice to use it. But I don't know the proper private server lingo to explain it properly off the top of my head.
A massive con for me right now is that their special specs can't Q as their special specs. Hunter (Tinkerer), Shaman, Priest (Monk), and Rogue (Demon Hunter) can't queue as tanks. So when they create bard, is it going to be fucked as well? We'll see.

I'm currently playing TWoW in Australia and the Que times are huge! Like, on Sunday, it was 7000 player que for the English speaking server....

I’ve been very meticulous. I keep getting error 132. No matter what. I’ve updated drivers. Nothing. So I was content to wait on a launcher.
you guys are stupid, i followed the instructions in LINUX and it worked perfectly. Take it from the top and read each word one by one

Since Duskhaven uses WOTLK Talents does the leveling become trivial stomp (aka mods die in max 3-4 seconds)?
You can always choose the HC Mode so you'll die if you pull more then 1-2 mobs
I never had that much interactions with players in an MMO than in Turtle wow, very beginner friendly, love it. Plus, you can add HD patch it's very easy.
Downloading the HD patch has caused all the creatures from Patch A to become geometry

I would love to play duskhaven but i accidently changed the realm list patch to a pdf and i cant figure a way to undo the change.
Rigtt click the file, select open with, and open with notepad. See if that works
Honestly? Im having an absolute blast on Turtle WOW HC. You know why? I have no intention of getting to max level and doing end game content. I've enjoyed every second of leveling, reading all the quests, taking in the lore of the zones both old and new, keeping up two primary and all secondary pofessions to my level, some fun RP every now and then and actually ACTUALLY taking things slow. The leveling to me IS the game in vanilla or at least 70%. And after wathing this video, getting in to any end game on this server seems like a pain anyways. They don't currenty have HC raiding on the server cause once you get to level 60, you get a title and som other stuff and then you can die as normal. HC raids would solve the issue of people having to start raiding from tier 1 again.
I like having a mount at level 8 and 2x exp boost but Duskhaven is not classic experience I was looking for.
I’m absolutely loving the custom monk class in Duskhaven.. maybe if turtle WoW had custom classes it would rip the scale for me.

what is that addon that add quest markers to the map?
The thing I like the most in my mmorpg is to immerse myself in its world. So having a small player and mob rendering range is a big cock block for me. I really think duskhaven should double, no, triple the rendering radius since it doesn't have any negetive impact until the server pop reaches around 4.5k.
They lowered it before they got new servers and I feel like they just forgot to increase it again
Increasing the render distance would load the server even more and it's already absurdly laggy every evening. Until they fix the unbearable lag, they shouldn't touch the render distance. I wonder why the lag wasn't mentioned in this video, it's a major con for Duskhaven and there's no fix for it in the horizon.
Not sure if you mentioned, but for Duskhaven on 3.3.5, I think the addon support is a lot higher. I could be wrong but the addon support for 3.3.5 looks very very strong so far to me. I doubt 1.12 has the same support.

I'm all for Duskhaven but there is a guy on Turtle WoW who has made tons of versions of popular addons specifically made for Turtle WoW. They also have a list of addons that are confirmed to work on the server. That aside though I've not yet encountered a 3.3.5 addon which doesn't work on Duskhaven except for AtlasLoot because there is custom loot. But they have their own version of it so that is no problem.
How is your graphics so clear? Mine is very flat and grainy even with settings maxed out.

I'm treating Turtle WoW super differently than I normally would for a vanilla server.. Usually I would pick one class and race to 60.. But now I've made err 7 characters and lvling them together, sharing their loot and lvling proffessions.. The goal isn't for all the characters to hit 60, and if I don't hit 60 on any of them.. eh I'm having fun doing something different.. And even if I hit 60 with one, its more to see the content and see what vanilla + can do. If they made a Fresh server it would be different.
Duskhaven is really alliance heavy I would consider that a con. Other than that i feel it's a pretty good server with huge potential
That's true but this is why crossfaction was added for a low pop server,horde is my go to every time and I don't mind playing with alliance ppl
Turtle wow - Population is around 5500-6000 on average now. There is an excellent Turtle HD addon that provides Legion era graphics.
ngl I'm leaning towards Duskhaven, but having to rebind keys will be a nightmare either way.
Just copy the bindings cache from your wtf folder , no need to change the bindings individually again.
Turtle WoW seemed like something I was gonna try out, but hearing that the server is on a 3yr release point... I'll take a hard pass. Mostly interested in lvling up with the pack as you described.

Well I had my progress on the official Blizz Classic Servers so I do not see that as a problem. It's nothing new after all. And with a lot of new players rolling in there are all the players you need to do all the raids in order I think. Unless you plan on playing PvP of cause.
Stormforge will lunch a brand new "Netherwing" TBC+ (pvp) server in next 2 days. Maybe this will makes you happy...
While I prefer Duskhaven, it also has some more bugs, and is (currently) slower to resolve them because of the smaller/newer team

Duskhaven isn't vanilla it's wotlk. Turtle is vanilla +. It's very different

@@valakktoo4145 being set in vanilla is quite a strech when all left from vanilla is the map and zones. The reason people want vanilla is with its struggles and the investment in leveling period - unfortunately when you get to max level in 15 hours youre missing out on 90 % of the content of the world.
@@Gemall I disagree on the investment in leveling period. SOME want that, sure. And for them it's great that Turtle WoW exists. But not everyone who wants vanilla wants that.

@@Nain000 We'll have to agree to disagree. If a server is 99% vanilla (everything except the awful leveling rate) then I, and I'd venture the majority of people, would still refer to it as vanilla. Also if I'm not mistaken Turtle WoW is already not vanilla.
I like both but am sticking with dusk since i don't have a lot of time to invest into game and leveling on turtle is just too slow. If i could buy a boost i would XD fck IRL responsibilities:(

TW is actually vanilla expanded. Duskhaven is a fun server since there's no balance and class mechanics aren't anywhere near what should be for vanilla, just the names. But that's ok. To each their own. Personally I'll stick to TW exactly because they have "no rush" chill mentality and I don't NEED to jump ASAP into Naxx to farm gear on no end.

@@brianwill5493 like what? Red the rules only twice. Had no problems with GMs or admins like forever. Reported some bugs and gold-sellers a couple of times and that's it. People start to break rules left and right getting banned daily. That's way better than what Blizzard had become.
sadly u can't play human hunter or troll warlock on Turtle WoW + like u said 3years in progress means everything is cleared / farmed which puts me off even more
It sucks turtlewow seems so against a fresh restart. I started playing duskhaven and I like it, but turtlewow is much more in line with what i'm looking for in a vanilla+ experience. But the lack of a fresh restart is really dissuading me from trying it out. Also seems insane to me to be putting time and effort into the 1-60 experience in turtlewow (feels like an afterthought on duskhaven) but realistically have it be dead for so many players.
There's an HD patch for TurtleWoW btw.

Duskhaven needs so much balancing and tuning but it's insanely good. The mythics are great but like I said balancing and tuning is in so much need. But man Noxx is insanely good

A full Deluxe versión (Turtle WoW) or a Early Access (Duskhaven) thats the Real question, at lest for me the only Real V+ plus server (twow).
Definitely duskhaven. I LOVE the benefits of wotlk like increased bar speed, better balancing etc. within vanilla content. Its just perfect and somehow it's what I always wanted in a private vanila server. 🎉

7:20 I wish i knew that 5 days ago! I kill a high elf player my level in STV and I get a some random dude yalling at me for 4 mins btw we both in war mode.
After doing both, I'd say if you are there for pure vanilla+ experience go for Turtle wow. If you want an alternative progress of older versions of wow (vanilla tbc wrath) go for Duskhaven.
Turtle wow is alot more polished as an RP project and deep outside of standard vanilla progress. After Naxx it's supposed to be a horizontal progression and it's client has alot of limitation.
Leveling speed and doing end game vertical progression Duskhaven pulls ahead as it is a 3.3.5 also more addon and customisation and forward client support.
Ideally if they merged into one project with turtle wow world building, better exp rate, accommodation of the newer specs and newer more supported client it'd be stellar.
