Hi Helen, the subject of the pensioners and less privileged folk, is on the lips of many. Do not know how young families manage in today’s world. Thank you for sharing your recipes. Yummy. As for your charity shop bargains, I believe more and more people are turning to charity shops in a way to save cash. Who could blame them. I used to work in a charity shop and the bargains, in some cases designer labels we had was unbelievable. Thanks for sharing xx

I have not baked cakes in so many years, you have got me going again.. Thank you…

Well Helen, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this video, it was a nice change to see things as real as it gets. Loved the ideas with the gammon, will definitely be buying that , and following that yummy pie recipe. My husband and I love cooking , and like you, we’re able to stretch the budget pretty well. I bought some lovely old pie dishes from a charity shop a couple of weeks ago, so I’ll be making good use of them. Those clothes were a bargain and looked lovely on you. Times are tough for everyone right now so your advice is always welcome. 🙏

    Hi Helen
Yes Martin Lewis is a genius when it comes to saving money. That pie looks amazing. I think I would add some chives as well plus some side salads too. I worked with a lady who weighed everything to make a cake even the eggs and that was the cake recipe. She did used to add some oil in with the cake to make it moist. She was very clever with iced decoration and won competitions for a wedding she made and decorated. It took her a few months to complete this as needed to “ rest” for a period of time. She showed us some photographs of the cakes she had made and decorated and they were a standard above Fortnum and Mason. They offered her a job and the salary was excellent but she couldn’t leave her family in North of England. Love the skirt and top . I have been lucky for some of my clothes from a few charity shops. Where needs must
All the best and thank you so much for this vlog as it was much appreciated. See you in the next one x

Nice selection today Helen - thanks for this. You’ve really made me think about cooking more with air fryers and slow cookers…I had a beef casserole in the oven for a good 5/6 hours the other day (French beef needs it believe me!) and delicious it was but it’s bound to have cost a fair bit. I also bake in the oven a fair bit so I’m seriously thinking of rootling out my air fryer from the back of my utility room. No point in it sitting there gathering dust is there?! Like the U.K. our electricity costs are very hefty. I loved it when Dolly was eying up the gammon. When you turned around to get something at that point I was just waiting for her to surreptitiously snaffle it from your worktop and leg it up the hall! I’m still giggling about you and your black jumper…”it doesn’t smell…I haven’t washed it…it’s not like I’m going to lick it”!! You are a b***** scream you really are! Thanks again Helen👌🏼. For six years I was a volunteer at a charity shop in town. So important that you wash everything before you wear it..or make the bed with it. Shoes be careful because you can get toenail fungus so you need to figure that one out. Socks will not necessarily fix the problem. See your pharmacist before you buy or wear them..same with boots. Purses wash thoroughly inside and out and consider a new purse liner which are cheap so you are using fresh liner with no unknowns. Remember no one really knows where these items came from.
You can get some fantastic bus from a charity shop which will give you years of happiness

I did make a cake in the airfryer , it was ok , but the texture was very tight , so not sure 🤔. As for charity shops , I do think they depend on the area they are in , ie , the more better of they are situated in , that does seem to reflect on the clothes .
But that outfit was good 👍. Thanks for sharing .

LOVE the jumper and colour on you! I'm on my own and often do a ham joint as the cooked meat freezes so well. Never thought to put sugar in, probably as I don't used smoked joint. Why no water, looks good tho, doesn't it dry out? I always grate and bag up my cheese as soon as I buy it, lasts so much longer and freezes well. That pie looked lovely. I could make smaller ones and freeze. The jumper and skirt look fab, very bright and cheery. Thank you for this. Nana Karen UK X

Hi Helen, helpful tips for many, especially young families. Will definitely do the gammon joint in the slow cooker (which went in a cupboard to make room for the air fryer). You suited the mandarin sweater and loved the black cowl (which you won’t be licking😂😂😂)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿xx

Money can be a funny one can't it? We all have to make choices how and where to spend. I am very grateful for my life. I work part time and take some of my pension. Luckily I always think Im low maintenance and reckon you can be really stylish from charity shops. You can always sell on and that way your wardrobe gets refreshed. Most of my clothes are now charity shop or Vinted. You'll be getting the bug!😂 lovely gammon I wish my hubby would eat it. My biggie is trying to get away as often as I can as cheaply as possible. Just stayed in a place outside Bembridge and mostly self catered as we had a voucher for M and S which was a treat. Enjoyed watching. Thank you H x

It is a difficult subject. And I think we are lucky to have choices. Many don't and that must be horrible. But it is a very sensitive topic, so I was wary, but at the end of the day, I can only speak for myself.....
I agree re the going away thing... I love having something to look forward to xx

Most charity shops put out their big sort on the same day every week so you can go on that day to find the newest things. I rarely get a chance to go rooting these days but I just think it’s fun. I usually find one or two things that I like and bring home to clean before wearing.
My daughter finds great things, she found my summer Coach handbag and matching Wallet at two different shops and they are like new👍🏼.
I have always worked to get value for money as well, unless you’re wealthy you need to. 🙋🏼‍♀️

I also bulk buy from Costco now it does make a difference. Really need a bigger freezer. Totally agree about shopping around.

The one thing I miss in the US is a piece of gammon,my Mom use to make it when I was a child.I think that the ham here is dreadful, and I never buy it.I like prosciutto, and Westphalia ham, both dry aged. You also have so many more charity shops,I watch a couple of RUclips creators that travel around the villages, and there are often charity shop side by side in the villages, here I would need to google to find one, few, and far between.I don’t have an air fryer, just me alone doesn’t seem worth it.Friends say they are expensive to run here,I have a gas stove, and you pay a minimum for the gas service, and usually I don’t go much over the minimum.I also have a convection toaster oven, and an Instapot,so I think that will suffice.😊

Oh my gosh Helen. Such a lovely video from start to finish. I especially loved the bit about saving money! I’ve always thought of you as the manager of funds at your household, but I could be wrong. It so important to help women know how to manage money. I was wondering if you have a spending allowance so to speak or how you set aside your discretionary funds just for you-before your RUclips channel and after. Thank you
