Seen Switchfoot at a small church in Kenmore Ohio back in 1999 when this song was “coming out on their new album.” I think I was 18 or 19. After the show, Chad (the drummer) came outside and was skateboarding and hanging out. I was wearing Soaps, which are tennis shoes that had grind plates in the middle that came out in California but the band had never seen them yet, even though they were out of San Diego. He asked to try them out, which I immediately allowed. Was fun watching him slide down the steps of the church with my shoes and hanging out that night. The whole band was super friendly and cool. One of my favorite memories.
I met the band when I was working for a radio station in Tulsa about ten years ago. I picked the guys up from the airport and was so incredibly nervous. I couldn’t believe I had Jon Foreman in our company car! lol
Mike was right when he said; I'd put up A fight to be someone A fight to be me But see now I'm down Under the pavement Of capital hills and lowercase people As time rolls by my dreams have become That which is attainable Not what I'm looking for I've got the company car I'm the one swinging at two below par Yeah, I've become one with the ones That I've never believed in But I've got the company car Hey, I'm the king of things I've always despised I'm the ginger-bread man Who got eaten alive I'm half-baked, I'm fake But see I got hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk And two hundred bucks I pass "Go" but, oh, Life's taken it's toll Have I won Monopoly to forfeit my soul? But see I've got the company car I'm the one swinging at two below par Yeah, I've become one with the ones That I've never believed in But I've got the company car, yeah All the kings horses At the foot of the wall They're taking pictures of The man who's lost all of his Masks of pretension He's got two faces left His is the one that he hides On the left Behind that smile Hiding tears and fear That burns like an engine It drives him away From the ones that he loves Mike was right Hey, Mike We're one and the same We're the faceless combatants In the loneliest game Ah, but say I'll wave as I'm driving by With that smirk in my eye Yelling "Hey, I'm something man, check me out!" Met Drew in 2002 while he was 'dating' Switchfoot. All Together Separate I have to say...those were the days....Drew we never got to schedule that concert in the amphitheater. That would complete my life...and give it all to Christ. For you brother.....amen, I love you.
Got a great job. Almost 15 years since thinking of Switchfoot. Dont hate me fans, just realized i fulfilled a prophecy pre-adolescent me saught. (Ps i still love their old stuff. Chem 6a forever)
Covering for the manager of our company's distribution hub one state over, and I get to drive a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.7L Hemi. It's got a massive glass rack on it that I have to avoid hitting anything with, but other than that, it's pretty comfy and powerful. I got the company car!!!

Agree to disagree. All subjective. I mean beautiful letdown was like their biggest record easily. Where the light shines through is really good IMO then it’s couple cuts from the rest
@@OD_green7 I'll check that one out. Keep in mind I'm just more a fan of this style music over their pop stuff. Legend of Chin & this album will always be my two favorites. I did hear some songs I liked on their new album tho

Coming back to this in 2024. One of my favorite songs of theirs.
Lyrically one of the most slept-on rock songs in existence.
Still sleeping on it.

Shit I was at that show!
I miss SOAPS. THE GOOD OL DAYZ
Wow, I can’t believe that this album is 25 years old!!! This was the first Switchfoot song I ever heard!!!
The. Best. Switchfoot. Song. Ever. Jon, how do you always know the exact words for every song...
This song lives in my head rent free and pops up randomly a couple times a year
Mike was right when he said; I'd put up
A fight to be someone
A fight to be me
But see now I'm down
Under the pavement
Of capital hills and lowercase people
As time rolls by my dreams have become
That which is attainable
Not what I'm looking for
I've got the company car
I'm the one swinging at two below par
Yeah, I've become one with the ones
That I've never believed in
But I've got the company car
Hey, I'm the king of things I've always despised
I'm the ginger-bread man
Who got eaten alive
I'm half-baked, I'm fake
But see I got hotels on
Park Place and Boardwalk
And two hundred bucks
I pass "Go" but, oh, Life's taken it's toll
Have I won Monopoly to forfeit my soul?
But see
I've got the company car
I'm the one swinging at two below par
Yeah, I've become one with the ones
That I've never believed in
But I've got the company car, yeah
All the kings horses
At the foot of the wall
They're taking pictures of
The man who's lost all of his
Masks of pretension
He's got two faces left
His is the one that he hides
On the left
Behind that smile
Hiding tears and fear
That burns like an engine
It drives him away
From the ones that he loves
Mike was right
Hey, Mike
We're one and the same
We're the faceless combatants
In the loneliest game
Ah, but say
I'll wave as I'm driving by
With that smirk in my eye
Yelling "Hey, I'm something man, check me out!"
I've got the company car
I'm the one swinging at two below par
Yeah, I've become one with the ones
That I've never believed in
But I've got the company car (I've got the company car)
Yeah, check me out
I've got the company car (I've got the company car)
Yeah, check me out
I've got the company car (I've got the company car)
Yeah...
Every time I have to take the ratty, old shop truck on a company errand, I think of this song and smile.
LOL
'99-'17, still making amazing music, Jon & crew
Justin Helms you mean '97-'97. Legend of chin was first
@@nonamefox9833 I dunno, maybe he just didn't like their first album.
"I passed gooooooooo but oooooooooh life taking its toll"
Always loved this song :D
Every time i listen to this, it makes me want to play monopoly. Every time.
My favorite song from switchfoot
+tim Tom I agree
Same! It was the first song I ever heard by them way back in middle school and I was hooked.
Still listening at the end of 2022. But still curious; who is Mike?
I love this song, how does it only have 39k views :(
This is still one of my favorite songs and it's 2019

It's not bad to get a good job, just don't sell your soul in the process.

When this plays while you're doing economics XD
I'm here to listen to the end of the song to get it out of my head.
I remember loving this song when I was like 6
still loving this playlist 2017 in here
This seems like one of those sing-along's you do with your friends xD Great song though
best song

Jesus Christ can save
Wish you guys would still write music this good, Switchfoot just hasn't put out anything good in years tbh....
