As someone who only observes the handheld market, this is the first one where I'm actually like "wow". I used GPD Win 2 as the main personal computer, plugged to USB-C and connected to external display. It works quite well. I'd expect the same from GPD Win 4, and I'd say it will be likely on par with Steam Deck.
Main complaint regarding the GPD Win 2 (docked) was the heat and the loud fan. And the battery life (as in how long until the battery starts to bulge and needs to be replaced).

I bought a gaming PC about 2 years ago. Not a huge thing but it's been able to play everything I have thrown at it. The processor in the GPD 4 may be a touch stronger than what I have in my huge PC. It's crazy. When I get my GPD4 I think I may actually consider getting an Egpu and take the 2070 Super in my PC and just dock my GPD4 to it and use it as my main computer all the time.

Make sure to use something like the Power Control Panel app. These devices if left to their own free will will ramp up wattage usage for something as simple as a background update. Then an F(x)tec Pro1 rose from those ashes, but it just wasn't for me and kinda buggy. Waited so long for Project ARA only for Google to kill it. Kept up on a few other modular-type phones in the hopes of one making it and enough people wanting keebs. But finally gave up after my Z Force died and the Pro1 just wasn't working out, now I'm on a Note 20 Ultra. During the 5ish years I had the Z Force I got used to using Swype, so that helped me transition to using screen typing only hut ugh, still miss the physical hardware keyboards though. @Pasi123 Год назад

@@JoeyPerleoni I still have Win8.1 on mine but sadly the support ended just recently.
I'd say the most annoying things about the Stream 7 are: only one microUSB port and no separate charging port, only 1GB RAM and 32GB eMMC, and no other input methods than the touchscreen.
I love the fact that the Steam 7 can be charged from a normal cheap power back or even from a PC USB port but a dedicated charging port would have been a nice addition so that it would be possible to use a USB hub while charging the tablet.
The tablet also needs a working battery to even boot so if/when the battery dies the tablet won't boot even when connected to a charger. I'm not sure if a separate charging port would have made it possible to use it even without a battery like how it's on most laptops.
Some other cheap Windows tablets also had a microHDMI port which would have been nice to have too.
1GB RAM was already really low when the tablet was new so an Atom Z3735F with 2GB RAM would have been nice. 32GB storage is also low for desktop Windows but tbh most more expensive Android tablets still had 16GB storage, heck even the iPad Pro 2015 had 32GB on the base model and unlike the Steam 7 it didn't have a memory card slot.
And for the input methods I think a small trackpad and mouse buttons next to the display would have been nice (like on a HTC Shift) but those are more of UMPC features.
Something similar to the Surface Pen would have been nice but that obviously would have been too expensive.
Some small (official) qwerty keyboard case would have been nice too.
To this day the Steam 7 is still the smallest PC that I have and the only one that can be charged with any USB charger or power bank.
It can even run BioShock (2007) although at quite low frame rate
Edit: I completely forgot the 32bit EFI which makes it impossible to run 64bit Windows on it. But that's the same on every Bay-Trail tablet.
Linux 64bit works though because it doesn't require a 64bit EFI.

A base model of one of these costs about the same as buying 3 Switches, so there's the costs there. There's multiplayer on a single system, where in this unit's case you'd have to buy a second controller where there's a lot of Switch games that can use the split joycons. There's the usual idiosyncrasies of configuring games in Windows, and the still to this day spotty controller support in PC versions of a lot of games, and so on and so forth.

Where it begins is a little hazy, so while it's fair to say GPD was on the actual *handheld* part first, Valve followed their suit with intent to stir it up some more after they failed the smaller niche project. I think that's the first of those handheld PC that I would classify as a real alternative to the Steam Deck. It's expensive, but I think for once, you actually get more than the Deck and not less.
The GPD Win 3 was underpowered compared to the Steam Deck, while having worst battery life and being double the price, same thing for the Aya Neo Next. The Neo Air is also underpowered and more expensive, but it also has a great OLED screen, so it's a sacrifice if you prefer performance or screen quality and size. The Anbernic Win600 is the only one that also runs Steam OS and is around the price of the Deck, which is great, but it also uses an Athlon APU, so it even has difficulties running games like Ori at a constant 30 FPS. There are also the odd ones like the OneXPlayer that have basically the same problems.
WIth the GPD Win 4, the Ayn Loki / Loki Max, the Aya Neo 2 and probably others I'm forgetting, it's really cool to finally see some real competition and what Valve will do in response (not that I expect a major update to the Steam Deck in the next year, we'll probably get one with a slightly better screen, better battery life and things like that, but I don't see them abandonning their custom APU after only a year)

I wouldn't risk the price, only if you know how to repair and can afford it lol. Lot of which is hard to tell a part, as there are plenty of "copy" builds of each other, as the original is lost in all that mess, when you shop direct from china like aliex/baba, etc.
And also how safe is it? what sort of key loggers are installed? that people are unaware of? virus scanners arent really made to pick up "unknown" special ones, custom virus's. I'd probably only keep for gaming with no CCredit cards or extra logins. Thats like having a extra dummy PC just for pirating games.

I actually used a wire mesh phone stand to keep it vertical with a small desk fan behind it whenever I wanted to run more stressful titles like Fallout 76. I've noticed that most "laptop cooling pads" tend to use extremely weak fans for some reason, so I doubt that it would even work well if they made an all in one solution.
