    Hi Kathi! Hope all is going well with you. I was looking for a new series to read and decided to look back through your videos. I’m waiting for book number 3 and throughly enjoying them. (Who knew with the author being in San Diego the library would have almost none of his books). Really loving the series so far. Thanks again. Hope 2023 is treating you well.

      Hi Sarah, hope you are well. I love this series and am about to start re-reading it for the 4th or 5th time. This is one of the best series in fantasy, IMO.

    I couldn't agree more with your review. I used to recommend the original trilogy to so many people back in the 1980's and they all loved it.

    I found the empire trilogy to be more consistent than the riftwar saga, but then I enjoyed the political and dynastic maneuverings of Empire over the straight up fantasy of Pugs adventures. I would definitely go back and pick up the Conclave of shadows books If I were you. They were very good.

      The Empire Trilogy is a different type of fantasy, though very well done. Back when I first read the series I preferred straight up fantasy.
      I did pick up the Conclave trilogy and will read them at some point.
      Thank you for taking the time to share.

    I read these on the bus to university in the 90’s I’m rediscovering them again via audio book. Great for enjoying our long distance driving, The Empire trilogy is great! I;m not listening to the Serpent war sage, and loving it…. Haven’t read most of the others, but plan to catch up….. REF is better in a lot of ways than JRRT. Wizards First Rule was also good but that’s a different auther

    Hands down my favourite series !!!!!!! So many characters that will live in your heart forever. Pug the sorcerer, Thomas the Valheru Dragonlord, Jimmy the hand,Prince Arutha and in later series Eric von Darkmoor,Ru Avery,Nakor the blue rider,Talon Silverhawk,Miranda daughter of Macros plus the children and grandchildren of characters established in the first trilogy, its a very rich sauce in this literary stew and its delicious!!!!! If you love traditional fantasy this is one of the best ever written. A Kathi 7 is like a 8.5/9 anywhere else lol.

    Magician is the book that made me fall in love with reading, i loved the riftwar series and the Empire series.
    I first read it when i was in my teens, and I just started reading it again 2 days ago for the 3rd time in my life and i am loving it all over again even though i am nearing my 50's.
    It was my favorite series for a lot of my life, with Game of thrones and The stormlight Archive edging ahead of it now.

    I have never read any of his books but I did hear about "Magician"! It's quite well-known among fantasy readers. I agree about Tolkien. He is definitely very black and white.

    His exploration of strong female characters only gets better later in the series, though I agree with your comment for the Riftwar Saga specifically; but later in the series Miranda, Briana, and a few other more "central" female characters are shown to be not only with grit, but integral to the advancement of the story. After finishing every book of his and completing the entire cycle I would say it's not LIKE Tolkein, but BETTER than Tolkein; I agree with the black and whiteness of Tolkein, and while Feist loves the gray area, more than that their PACE is massively different; Tolkein preferring a garden's stroll, Feist throwing the reader headlong into only the juiciest bits of intrigue and action throughout his 3 centuries of history in the world he has created.

    Never read this author. Fantasy isn’t my genre. I’m more a historical fiction lover. I just finished An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris. (This morning in fact)
    I’m also reading through the Bible in 90 days which is quite a feat. I have about 20 days left.

      If you are ever interested in trying fantasy, Feist's 'Magician' is a great start.

  • @CybreSmee
    @CybreSmee 2 года назад

    Im not sure where you get not enough strong women in the books? Pretty much all of the female characters are kick-ass over-powered. I think Feist is a little obsessed with this if you ask me. Probably the only character who is not a total Mary Sue is Abigail of Carse. There are three complete books dedicated to Mara alone.

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi  2 года назад

      I was talking about the original series of 3 books. There were few memorable female characters in those.

    • @CybreSmee
      @CybreSmee 2 года назад +1

      @@NerdyKathi Could be why they are the best? Im all for strong women characters when its appropriate, but the Kingdom is based on medieval times, women just didnt have strong roles outside royalty. The other races (like the Kesh) has historical lore behind the he/she who is Kesh and Lakeisha's concern with multiple female leaders, it make sense in the context. To simple squeeze in diversity characters just to keep the woke crowd of 2020's happy would make for a rather horrible read. Have a look at what they've done to Tolkien.

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi  2 года назад

      Given that we are talking about fantasy not historical works, I don't agree that an author cannot include strong female characters. They can create anything they like in a fantasy world. I agree however, that I don't want token characters, to appease readers.

    • @CybreSmee
      @CybreSmee 2 года назад

      @@NerdyKathi Sure, but its not compatible with the lore that a comparable woman character can do what Pug did, for instance. Surviving 4-years as a slave alone would not make sense in a world where every other woman is raped and murdered on sight. Young Adult fantasy does all this 'squeezing diversity' into books, which is why most of it is total unreadable garbage. But they are appealing to a different market. Theres no reason why you couldn't just make up more fantasy in your head when reading it - pretend Pug is a trans black Asian if it makes you feel better. I doubt Mr Feist would mind.
