  • In a way, Laserdiscs never really outgrew their experimental phase. Here’s an informal, overview of SOME of the more idiosyncratic Laserdiscs out there (and/or their packaging).

    21:40 - So, random dude is outside of car, says his speech, then when it goes back to the main guy, random dude is just plain gone, even though main guy JUST finished talking with him.
    This is clearly a haunted garage, haunted by EXTREMELY professional ghosts.

    19:24 That's a piece from the Network Music library. It's entitled "Twice the Speed" and can be found on album NM002 "Disco Inferno." I believe it dates from 1979. Unfortunately there is not a lot of info on Network Music out there.

    Disco Stu digs DiscoVision ooooh yeahhhh!
    That over dramatic DiscoVision bumper after the spirograph scene reminds me of the old NBC peacock color TV promos from the early 60's And jeeez! That spirograph scene was long! Also, the at the time high tech DiscoVision was useless showing good pictures when they were taken by cheap film and cameras. It looked like the NFL picked up footage from the editing room floor there to recycle.
    And 19:35 that bastard was tearing down the suburban/residential street on his POS Ford LTD II
    22:02 come on! That was totally intentional! Jeep/Eagle wanted to ride on the coat tails of one of the ultimate 80's icons, Max Headroom. And dang! That made me LOL!

    • @JL-sm6cg

      Eagle was actually spun off from former AMC and Renault cars when the acquisition happened at first, then they created their own cars, or at least siblings of the other divisions' models.

    Had one of these discovision's (Magnavox player) back in 1979. Got it at a Rich's in Atlanta. Had it a a month or two and returned it as it would not work properly. 1979 was the height of the "disco" fad.

  • @WOSArchives
    @WOSArchives 5 лет назад +3

    7:28 Like you said, some DiscoVision titles do allow you to view the full bumper. For example, my copy of Richard Pryor's Which Way is Up does allow me to rewind and to see the full bumper, which I've uploaded onto my channel. Unfortunately, my copy also has a lot of rot, a little bit better in terms of sound than your NFL disc (at least IMO), but much worse in picture (there's a moving line that spans the full frame on the upper half of the picture, kinda like on a worn VHS tape. Also, the colors are just bad).
    It's unfortunate, as like you said, it is a very nice bumper, especially for the late 1970s. Maybe I might get lucky and find a disc in better shape that'll also allow me to view the full bumper. At least the spirograph is usually fully playable when it appears at the end of the disc, which I can view on all of my discs that use it (some of them, namely the later ones made at the end of the label's life, use the MCA Videodisc side bumpers instead).

    If you put your player in service mode then those dead sides with the error messages will play. You can also scan back to the very beginning on any disc, but be careful doing that as I ruined one player being too careless- it was reading the label then could never refocus properly. A good way to see the beginning is hit still-step and then lightly tap reverse scan until it goes back far enough. Hit Audio Monitor to get rid of the onscreen display that comes on. It will also read past the ending code to the very edge of the disc, every disc has at least black video out to there and some DiscoVision discs have surprises like color bars and the next side starting up.

    • @OddityArchive
      @OddityArchive  5 лет назад

      Thus far, when I put the player into test mode, it causes all the stuff that keeps the audio and video stable in sync completely out of whack, so it's more like watching extra-bad scrambled cable TV.

    So "Disco Vision" is nothing to do with disco, even though the sleeves sort of look like silver disco suits. Strange .. I know them as Laser Discs.

    • @cessnaace
      @cessnaace 2 года назад

      DiscoVision was the format's first name. In 1980 the format was sold to Pioneer, who used LaserVision and LaserDisc. Some Image Entertainment and European releases used CD Video, which was misleading as the video portion of the disc was analog.

    Highly doubtful there is enough interest in trying to revive Laserdisc as a niche format anytime soon, would be neat if someone out there was crazy enough to do it. It's a shame I only ever encountered these things either in a classroom setting or happened upon someone who owned LD player and some discs. There's something charming about the format that's hard to put my finger on.

    So, did you manage to find out who composed that awesome music from the Jeep/Eagle training disc?
    Regarding the music from the Ford training disc, I think whoever was entrusted to come up with a tune was under express instructions to find a compromise between Vangelis's Pulstar and Francis Monkman's Achievements Of Man.
