    My personal preference is the H/H layout. I like the way Charvel have done the wiring on these guitars. In terms of controls, I much prefer the simplicity and reliability of a simple 3 way switch. Add the ability to split coils (or in this case change phase) and you have a great array of tones without having to look and make sure the blade switch is in the correct position (very useful if you need to switch pickups mid song).

    I have the Charvel DK24 2pt HSS in manly shell pink as my gigging guitar, and it's great. I needed something versatile for our set, playing anything from country to punk, and it covers it all. They're at a good price point too - upmarket enough to have top quality parts throughout (the Gotoh trem is perfect - in fact, it's one of the only guitars I own that I haven't wanted to change anything on), yet it's inexpensive enough that I'm not afraid to trust it to airport baggage handlers. I really can't fault it in any way. It even looks good on stage, especially when I played mine at - ahem, humblebrag - Glastonbury this summer. I like it so much, I'm currently thinking about getting another for home use.

    • @iDrraaaK
      @iDrraaaK 4 года назад

      @@woolgum Lmao, even with a quality control close to zero, i'd choose a dk24 over an american strat anyday. And the qc is actually not that bad, it's actually exactly the same as fender, as fender owns charvel.
      Just better guitars on almost any point.

    • @woolgum
      @woolgum 4 года назад

      iDrraaaK I agree if you are talking about Mexican Fender, same factories and QA-people I guess. American fender is another level - at least from the era my American fenders are from (-98, -04). I’ve tried two Mexican charvel and they where low quality in both hardware and build. Couldn’t stay in tune. Weird marks after mistakes like the nut had a small space above it like they first put it wrong and then moved it. Etc. Sure, I might be the unlucky one who got two bad ones in a row.

    • @iDrraaaK
      @iDrraaaK 4 года назад +1

      @@woolgum Well, pricepoint is another level aswell, You have to expect a better quality control as the specs do not justify the price of american fender strats. BUT I've some baaaaad fretwork on higher end fenders (i assisted a luthier for some times), and very surprisingly even on custom shop ones, so yeah quality control fucks up sometimes, and it's very well known with fender (so with charvel too i guess).
      And some honesty here, dk24 got very good hardware. EVH Low friction pots with a soft lock at 10 ? Seymour pickups ? Locking tuners ? Gotoh bridge ? That's not low end. Like not at all.
      On the specs alone, the dk24 obliterates any strat, even the recent ultras. The body shape is amazing, the contoured heel joint is sexy asf, flat compound radius, luminlays, roasted mapple neck with thin profile, 24 jumbo frets, locking tuners, Graph Tech nut, gotoh bridge, and i could go on and on. This has EVERYTHING you can wish on a modern playing guitar, fender's stuck in the past.
      Ok maybe the ones you saw were poorly made and still managed to get through the quality control somehow, but so far i've seen 2 dk24, both for a refret with stainless steel, they were great, no red flag, held tuning well, rolled fingerboard edges, good fretwork, and to be honest, the dk24 + stainless steel frets with a pro setup (very low action possible with a flat compound radius) is a very VERY great instrument. Had to play a 2k5$ kiesel to find something above that level of confort, specs, and playability.

    • @ThorneyedWT
      @ThorneyedWT 4 года назад +2

      @@rynn409 It is not "simplified", it is just what I prefer. TBH my favorite dirty tone is strat neck single through big muff driven at about 12 o'clock and mild tubescreamer boost in front of it, but that sound is very genre-specific. In general H-H is much more versatile for dirty tones but I struggle to get usable clean ones even on alnico 5 burstbuckers, let alone anything ceramic. By the way, your example sounded a bit harsh for my taste, so it is all about personal preferences after all.

    HSH all day. First inspired by Dave Murray of Iron Maiden though he rarely gets the plaudits for putting Super Distortions on his Kossof Strat and bequeathing the most flexible pickup arrangement. Of course he used a 3 way so a tip of the hat to Steve Vai for using a super switch to get the out of phase single coils and the various Guthrie iterations over recent years. Love it so much that my Parker Nitefly is customised to be HSH. Count me in for the D&D. Who's Dungeon Master?

    HSH with splits on pos. 2 & 4, like on an RG. That's what works best for me. That's the most versatile setup, I think. But if you only play black metal, you wouldn't need the middle pickup, I guess. So it all depends on what you need. I play metal and pop, so I use it all. I'd love Les Paul's and all other guitars to come with HSH, it would be awsome!

  • @MartinCliffe
    @MartinCliffe 4 года назад +2

    I make sure I have one HH and one HSS guitar with me for most things I do. Covers all the bases (I never want for a bridge single coil on its own!)
    Give the DK24 stainless steel frets and it would be an amazing deal. As it is, it's a "nearly" guitar (but still a lot closer than the Fender Ultra)

  • @MarioFromMario

    I think that the "tolerances" that people tend not to acknowledge enough is in the pots. There is a huge variance in the actual values of potentiometers that are rated at 500K even in high-end guitars, and it makes a substantial difference.

    My two cents: You can put a spacer under the middle pickup cover so the pole pieces don't stick out. Then lower it a bit, and it will not catch your fingers while hybrid picking. I need that sound but I can't deal with it being in the way. I'm going to try a hot middle pickup next to help with the volume drop you get from lowering.

    I love HH pickups that come with interestingly voiced wiring options. I guess the king of these is the Seymour Duncan P-Rails with the Triple Shot Pickup Ring Mounted Switching System for each pickup. It needs to be on one of your videos! Each pickup has a thin rail-style single coil and a p-90 fused together. The triple shot can change each pickup from parallel to series to single coil to p-90. If you throw in an extra switch for making them out of phase in the middle position, you get a jack of all tones 😁

  • @Kamil92Zgon
    @Kamil92Zgon 4 года назад +8

    I love HSS but the most problematic thing is to set up a tone appropriate for all of pickups/positions. Finally you found great amp/effects settings for a bridge humbucker and you are happy, but then you want to test how it sounds with neck single coil pickup and it could be better. It`s not easy to find good ballance

    LOL! Best ending ever! I wish I'd have waited to buy my Pro Mod. Hated the upper fret access on my 1st-generation DK24 HH FR because of the chunky neck joint and sold it after a month. These new ones with non-locking trems look to have have the smoother one reminiscent of the Ibanez All Access neck joint.
