North Carolina Senate Panel Advances Anti-Mask Bill

  • A COVID-era change that allowed people in North Carolina to wear a mask for health reasons moved a step closer to being removed from state law Tuesday. Senate Judiciary Committee Republican voted in a voice vote with Democrats objecting to advance a law to enhance penalties for people who wear masks while committing another crime or for those who block traffic. House Bill 237 now moves to another Senate committee. But the bill also removes a provision that exempts people who wear masks for health and safety reasons that was added in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.
And it was that part of the legislation that attracted the most opposition from Democrats on the panel and public speakers.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Buck Newton, R-Wilson County, said the bill is not intended to "prosecute granny for wearing a mask in the Walmart - unless she was sticking steaks in her bag."
The bill comes after pro-Palestinian demonstrations and protests at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus in previous weeks. Many of the protesters wore masks throughout the demonstrations.

This is the kind of evil stuff that is the reason many of us will not vote Republican anymore. Before Covid, I had a nephew who had cancer who had to wear a mask, as did everyone in his family to protect him. I also had a coworker who had leukemia before covid who had to wear masks to work. People wore masks long before covid to protect their lives, and people are still wearing masks to protect their lives. My coworker would get comments from people that embarrassed her. It’s already difficult enough wearing a mask, but now Republicans want to make it ILLEGAL. There are no morals anymore in the Republican Party, just evil like this. I will never vote Republican again.

I’m waiting for someone, anyone to come up to me, a 5 foot 2, petite 50 year old woman with health issues in my lungs, and snatch my mask off of my face while I’m grocery shopping. The only place I go in public is the grocery store. Would you rather me cough up mucous on the produce every trip? I have severe GERD and I’m constantly coughing up mucous. I wear a mask so it won’t spray everywhere. NC lawmakers are the devil!

I hope your way of thinking catches on enough to counteract this state's thoroughly gerrymandered status...
I agree with you, this kind of gratuitous attack not only on the immunocompromised but on freedom in general is bizarre, to put it gently.

The house bill does not Target people with compromised immune systems. The only states that if you do riot demonstrate or commit a crime with a mask on and try to say it was for health reasons you don't get the exemption. Get your leftist ideology straightened out. You are part of the reason this country is being destroyed from within

The house bill does not ban people with existing health issues from wearing masks. Get your facts straight. But it's just like the left is snowflakes to go completely unhinged over this. Black lives matter riots just stop oiled demonstrations and now pro Hamas riots are all 100% from people on the left. You have no one else but yourselves to blame.

The house bill does not ban people from wearing masks if they have health issues. They just can't use it as an excuse to go anonymous to loot riot block traffic which is what people on the left do so well. They have no one to blame but themselves. Thanks a lot snowflakes

I am immunocompromised and a caretaker for my elderly, Ill grandmother. They can lock me up, I will always wear my mask in crowded public spaces. This is disgusting.

Apparently the bill, as currently proposed, has no penalty just for wearing a mask, it'll be a case of "just technically illegal" (which is still problematic, but won't lead to being "locked up" unless there are other factors that allow for an actual penalty). (Note: I'm not an expert and my research on this proposed law may not be complete, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Also, there's no telling how this bill will be modified down the line).
My problem, of course, is this might still lead to problems for people that need to wear masks for health reasons. Even just getting pestered by law enforcement can be an issue if someone's already in a delicate state, and I have no idea how this might potentially affect the policies of establishments.

They are not targeting people like yourself. It is just to say that it will no longer be tolerated to simply wear a mask to hide your identity. Cowboys used to wear bandanas to protect from the dusty trails. The wearing them into a bank was for another reason. Take off the bandana and grow up. I am tired of people on the left ruining it for all of us

Thank you so much for this. It is my understanding that the bill does not ban people with compromised health from wearing masks. We just have so many rioters demonstrators and even Vandals wearing masks. I think the bill is too discouraged this that they will not have some type of waiver because they have pre-existing conditions

So I understand the senate leader said this is not something to prosecute granny at the walmart? I do not like that either. You are basically saying us older people GRANNIES it is not for us. Seems you are breaking the law possibly talking about older people. Is this not included in discrimation. WHAT IS THE difference with a grannie and a 30 year old shopping in WALMART> OH I forgot it is okay to talk about grannies????????
I am older and do not appreciate your talk

Yeah, it's a condescending way to try to turn people's grandparents into political tokens instead of actual people.
The fact that it tries to set people's minds at ease while guaranteeing *+literally nothing+* is also an important thing to take note of.
Anyway, your lack of appreciation for the framing is noted and, itself, appreciated, thank you for giving voice to that.
