Having just replaced my existing barrel pond with a new one I thought I should add a few comments here. If it's a proper whiskey barrel you don't need pond liner as the wood will swell when wet and so won't leak. Oxygenators are important as they keep the water clear. Also, make sure something like a small tree branch is in the pond so that wildlife can escape if they fall in. I've also added a platform for bathing birds.
If the barrel is something like an old whiskey or beer barrel half, then you do not need a pond liner and putting one in could do more harm than good. Whiskey and Beer barrels are meant to hold liquid, it is the liquid that expands the wood and makes it water tight. By putting a liner in it, the wood will dry out completely which can cause the metal rings around the outside to fall as the wood contracts. This in turn can cause the whole barrel to collapse. Do not put a liner in an old whiskey or beer barrel, simply fill it with water...as much rain water as possible, then leave it. The water will cause the wood to expand, sealing it. This might take a day or two and you might have to top the barrel up again.
Compost in the pots...or soil?....Also...what happens in heavy rain, will the 'pond' overflow, and possibly take plants and/or critters with it? Oh...I've noticed that nobody replies........................... ^..^
I didn't get it either but slowed down and finally figure it out. My barrel is 22 inches wide and 15 inches high. So 1 x 22 + 2 x 15 = 22 + 30 = 52 inches. So a 52 inch square piece of liner.

This is merely a barrel planter for water plants! It's not wildlife friendly in the slightest. No way in OR out for them.
Would this be a good breeding ground for mosquito?
Solution for mosquitos, add fountain or bubbler to water to keep water circulating. Also helps with algae issues
Love this
Problem: mosquitos
Solution: dragonflies & damselflies

Buy a hard plastic liner. They are only 20bucks
If you don’t keep the barrel itself wet the wood will dry and shrink and the metal rings will drop off. 🙄
I dont get the measuring of the liner. Cut Two times the size of each side. 😕😕😕

How do they Get in when it is so tall?
Or out? Looks like a death trap for wildlife. There needs to be some escape routes.
Are outdoor mono blocks safe
if i try to make a pond ill probably have troubles with zika and dengue
The101Channel just add guppies or mosquito fish that eat mosquito larvae
