Im an old guy that likes to mod anything that I get my hands on. Usually the ability to do clean mod jobs comes from many years of hacking things up. I have to say .. buddy that was a clean mod! You paid close attention to detail of cuts and fitment. Great video documentation! Very impressed! Now .. that kinda gave me the itch to create a set for my Jeep :-). Good job bud!!
This is amazing. I've been thinking of doing a low profile retrofit for a while and this helps a lot. If I may make a suggestion, though... put "4x6" and "retrofit" somewhere in the title of your video. It'll help direct a lot more people to your video.
Dude...this has to be one of the best conversions Ive seen on this type of housing. My Firebird has the 7"x6" housings. Ive had projectors kicking around for YEARS now. My main issue is the depth due to the pop up lights. This install has inspired me though. I really like the way you made the PVC adapters and used them as the shrouds. That was genius. Giving you a huge shout out if I ever get back to the project because Im 100% using this idea! Thanks for the video!
Breyden - when I hot glued the projectors into the housing that's when I set the depth. I could slide them in and out to set the right depth. Then I tacked them in place when I had the right depth set.
Justin Depew i have the exact same headlamps and just ordered a set of the same projectors. My question is, based on the projector length and overall size, would it be possible to mount them just like you did but without cutting the back and instead removing the glass and mounting them through the front? Cause i noticed they stuck out quite a bit on the back
NOT BAD DUDE!!! Not often do I become impressed with what people do to mod their cars, but a few of the things you did like using the router and chop saw on plastic/pvc was something that you don't ever typically see someone doing!! That's awesome man!! Great job!!
This is pretty much unrelated (potentially), but I have a 2002 Saab that has a small bulb, maybe 5 watts inside the light housing. Even if you turn off the headlights and have the fuse removed for the daytime running lights this 5 watt light will turn on, apparently it's to keep the headlights slightly illuminated at all time to give them a bit of "sparkle" so oncoming traffic can see you. I did a retrofit and removed them.
Very nice!...One idea for people who want the shroud to have a crome like finish is you could cover the PVC shroud with that aluminum tape then polish the tape with compound and buffer wheel until it has a mirror finish.
at first i thought this would be a bit of a hack job when you didn't open the headlights up, but damn, that is one of the cleanest jobs I've seen! can't fault it! love the home made shrouds as well, very nifty. kudos on the video, loved it!
Nice i love these type of diys for important things like head lights. Thank you, where I live stock headlights for a older car are not enough, lots of cracks on the streets and potholes such which can mess up your car at night.
That conduit idea just made it look easier! thought I was going to have to use extreme accuracy skills to cut the housings to fit the projectors correctly. Great video! Thanks for sharing!
It probably isn't, but since I have a need to make things perfect (in this case to make the light cut off level perfect), it would've taken me days to finish both side. Wanting better headlighting for my 1986 mr2, the best upgrade i have at the moment is the H4 Hella 7x6 conversion housings (reflective housing), I tried adding a OPT7 LED bulb but the housing makes too much glare for the way that the bulb was constructed, and didn't have a good cut off.
Nice, the custom shroud was a pretty cool. I build retrofit kits like this as well, except I trim and shape the various shrouds that are available to fit in the headlight size that i'm working with. It's interesting seeing someone else's way to do this.
excellent video. do you have any adjustment on the headlight? up\down or left ight? does the beam project where its needed and not blind oncoming drivers?
I know its a long shot but if you still have this car, could you make a video of how you made the headlight brackets for the 4x6? I wanna do this to my miata but i haven't found any diys that look as clean as yours
doing a retrofit on a 1g 3000gt and was curious about the mechanics of your popups and the level of clearance it has with the back end of the projector.
Thanks for this video! I bought these same crap lights off eBay (but 5 x 7) for my old toyota truck and they sucked so bad I was really close to throwing them away and then thought maybe someone would have a good mod video for them...and here I am!
Soooo I have a old Toyota pickup 89 and it has the three female input which is the ground, high beam, and low beam. But my question is... if I do this headlight housing and the projector only holds the H1 bulb is there any way I can convert the wires or anything like that? I was thinking of buying the H1 bi-xenon kit and doing the ground on metal and the high beam and low beam connect to the corresponding wires. Is that possible???
nice, I made projector headlights for my 1994 chevy corsica, it was an odd car but I done it up big time lol the lights were mostly for looks did not get a really fuctional headlight this looks like it could work nicely. plus if you got the buckets for it you could aim it properly.
hi Justin I have also converted my sealed beam crystals to Projector headlights on 2015 May. I used the original shroud this was possible because i opened it from the front. I didnt throw it to the oven but i used a hex saw to remove the binding cement. Also i used GREY 999 GASKET MAKER as the sealer instead of epoxy and foil and to reattach the lens to the back. And it is a fine job and works well. Believe me or not for the entire thing i used a angle grinder, a screw driver and a hex saw only. You have good equipment man. One small problem some moist leaks in from the bulb opening. If you find a solution please let me know.
The final product seemed to turn out great. I made my own projectors for my 92 Dodge Stealth because I wasn't buying a $900.00 kit. My technique was a little different. Anyway. Great work and good looking ride!!!
How was the fitment behind the lenses and against the Pop-Up cover? Thinking about doing a biled projector but it seems all projector are way to long to fit inside the 7 inch round halogen housin
Very nice tutorial, reminds me of something I did for my old 02 Focus with a RS bumper, I put Cadillac HID's into the fog light sections of the bumper.
That was interesting. I tried to do projectors on a car once, but found it too complex at the time. Wish I'd seen this. I also bought a set of those fake 7" round projectors off eBay. They were awful! No light actually went forward! Great hack!
GREAT job. Looks excellent. Did they come out level, like to pass a vehicle inspection. Do they "vibrate" at higher speeds, whereas to cause headaches in driving for longer distances?
Oscar Lechuga they do not rotate because they are glued in place. Also I haven't noticed much vibration. Although these pop up headlights are more subject to vibration than standard headlights, but that has nothing to do with the projector.
Great stuff i like it very neat build was there a downside to the build? I'm wondering if these style lights cause temporary blindness to oncoming traffic? and how did you adjust them to point straight?Do they work for immediate visibility?
Projector lights are designed to not blind oncoming traffic. They have a very sharp cutoff at about bumper height. To adjust them, I made brackets with adjustment screws to aim the lights. You can see pictures of this on my website. The link is in the description.
Dude, awesome tutorial. I have been looking for projector or LED lights for my street rod truck. I think ill stop looking now. Ill probably add DIY halos to mine. Thanx again. Now you should look into the Miata Exo-skeleton kit and a Coyote drive train.
cool video. how do you adjust the beam direction? Also, how do you ensure that the beam projects to the right. (I live in the UK where we drive on the left hand side of the road and car headlights have to project to the left to avoid dazzling vehicles travelling in the opposite direction of travel.)
There is an adjustment mechanism for up and down on the car. Click the link to my website in the description for more pictures. There is no adjacent for left and right. It is not possible to blind people with projector headlights because the beam of light is below eye level at all times.
I have a 92 4x4 toyota truck ,I put a 94 4 runner front end on it . I don`t have much room behind the headlight . how much more do the new finish light stick out compared to the stock light ? also how much brighter are the new ones then the old ones ? also scene you did a great job on your lights ,how much would you charge to do a set for my truck ?
Rodger Privett hi Roger! The projectors stick out the back of the housing quite a bit. I don't have the exact number but it's probably 2 or 3 inches. The HID bulbs are incredibly bright. It's a huge difference over the stock lights. If I had to charge for the lights it wouldn't be cheap. At least $600 because it is a lot of work and takes a long time.
+Justin Depew OK Thanks ILL bother you more when ill get there now im trying to find a decent set of projectors. Not easy to find on Ebay.... to many Some HI/BI LOW BEAM SOME NOT
I really enjoyed this video. if you do one on how you mounted and wired them in I would greatly appreciate it! I sure hope to see more miata videos! keep up the good work!
+Chris Duke They have a straight cutoff on low beam, wide beam of light. And as far as legal goes... obviously it isn't DOT approved so no its not "legal". But no cop is going to pull you over for modded headlights, I see too many idiots running around with HID bulbs in their lifted hick trucks with fifty lights on the front and they don't get harassed (they should).
+Chris Duke If you get involved in an accident, the insurance company wont give you shit, if they find out that your car isnt streen legal. Atleast in my country... I dont wanna end up paying my whole life for someones hospital bill
+Chris Duke You could do that by using projector headlights from a Punto (or other car, but that would be one of the cheaper options). They already have a beam pattern set, so you wouldn't have worry about that, except making sure that you'd line up the projectors exactly the same as they were sitting in original headlight they came out of ;)
That was great! Ive been looking for a way to put projectors in a 4x6 housing without baking them. Your video was super detailed, but I do have a question. How did you set the depth of the projector in the headlight so it wouldnt touch the housing lense? Again, thanks so much for that video

Thanks for the comment! Good luck if you make your own!
agreed yezzir, this guy should be a millionaire inventing these products,..
If you want to learn more about headlight, check this www.novsights.com/
Mini H1's are always a great choice. Especially huge upgrade when compared to factory sealed beams. Nice job!
This is amazing. I've been thinking of doing a low profile retrofit for a while and this helps a lot.
If I may make a suggestion, though... put "4x6" and "retrofit" somewhere in the title of your video. It'll help direct a lot more people to your video.
Justin, I just wanna say that I watch a lot of how to clips on RUclips but yours has to be one of the best. Absolutely beautiful job! Kudos to you.
Thanks I appreciate it!

Hi from Australia. Thanks for posting your video. Dad and I found it highly informative and detailed. Great work!!!
One of the better Tube videos I've seen. Very good with your hands and instructions. Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks!

Impressive. Attention to details make this mod standout. Nice thought to use the pvc connector fir shroud.
Pretty slick, they look really good once they're mounted up.
U did a good clean job..... Without baking..... Nice and u gave me some ideas too
I'm glad you got some ideas! Thanks for watching.
dude, no words to describe how amazing ur work is. its more than perfect.
Thanks man!
This is definitely the best write up/ tutorial I have seen on this conversion. Nice work dude, super helpful.
Blake Sommers thanks Blake!

your ideas is so good
Nice work, I have 2 older cars that have the semi sealed beams and if there is room behind them I will tackle this over the winter. Thanks.
How could anybody could give a thumbs down. Very good job!
Talented! I prefer making things instead of buying it this is impressive
nice headlights. Great procedure the router on the conduit gave it a nice finish
Thanks!
Excelente trabajo amigo. Muy lindo. Prolijo. Un abrazo desde Argentina
Cool how you made your own custom shroud. Very nice work.
Hi , great job !!
I wish you are still there
What kind of plastic is the lens made of ?
Very good friend video I have some like this but I just want to put the bicel of what diameter are 2.5 inches?
Nicely done! Justin
great work , factory made looking , keep up the good work .
Thanks!
Nice lil custom project
doing a retrofit on a 1g 3000gt and was curious about the mechanics of your popups and the level of clearance it has with the back end of the projector.
You have some serious skills bro

You are a perfectionist BRO
BRAVO
Very true
Very nice man, I miss having vehicles to customize and work on..
hi Justin
I have also converted my sealed beam crystals to Projector headlights on 2015 May. I used the original shroud this was possible because i opened it from the front. One small problem some moist leaks in from the bulb opening. If you find a solution please let me know.
You were able to get the shroud to fit? Nice work. Do you have any pictures?
Very impressive build, Justin! I particularly like the red accent in the housing. Great job!
The final product seemed to turn out great. I made my own projectors for my 92 Dodge Stealth because I wasn't buying a $900.00 kit. My technique was a little different. Anyway. Great work and good looking ride!!!
What was different with your technique?
really nice craftsmanship. looks dope.
How was the fitment behind the lenses and against the Pop-Up cover? Thinking about doing a biled projector but it seems all projector are way to long to fit inside the 7 inch round halogen housin
Very well done!...wish I had a chop saw ! Does the front lens get very hot?
Thanks! The front lens stays pretty cool, the rear of the projector gets warm but it's not too bad.
Very nice tutorial, reminds me of something I did for my old 02 Focus with a RS bumper, I put Cadillac HID's into the fog light sections of the bumper.

Best how-to video on projector retrofitting. Very well explained and executed
Thanks for the kind words!

Projector lights are designed to not blind oncoming traffic. They have a very sharp cutoff at about bumper height. To adjust them, I made brackets with adjustment screws to aim the lights. You can see pictures of this on my website. The link is in the description.
Nice clean job!! love it
fantastic job,Justin
clean and perfect. good job my friend. Thumbs up
Thanks!
Very awesome! Your DIY videos are invaluable and I implore you to keep making more, especially seeing as I have a miata as well.
Well done!
ANY videos on how to build the lower headlight height for the 4X6
I was certain this was possible. Thanks for the conviction to make the video
Nice clean work .
very nice...very detailed oriented. good job.
Dude did a good job! Looks clean!
Very nice Job. Very Clean

Awesome video. Just curious, is there another housing that's smaller (in width ofcourse)?
Any video of the cutoff? I did a d2s mini recently and would like to see yours to compare. Looks to be the H1 style mini correct?
No video at the moment but I do have some pictures I could show. It is H1.
nice build what projector did you use the patteren at night was very good. what lights didmyou use?
Projectors are the Morimoto Mini and the bulbs are H1 6000K HID bulbs.
very Very VERY nicely done job....!!finished product looks amazing. .!!
Thanks Maynor!
That perfect for snow plow lights .! Thanks!
jay penton these would make amazing snow plow lights!
Great tutorial and great video. very nice job well done.
Pretty impressive. Good job.
I think you should have mounted a orange round led on the PVC and made it into a turn signal
This is really nice. Good job man.
+AaAsCd Thanks
I have a question , How did you connect the 2 wires to the original dashboard Lights switch /
I used a relay and tapped into the original wire harness for the signal. Power for the relay comes from the fuse box.
+Justin Depew YOU tapped in to the wiresthat of the OEM Bulbs ?
+choco caroche yeah it's really easy.. Just have to find the right wire
+Justin Depew OK Thanks ILL bother you more when ill get there now im trying to find a decent set of projectors. Not easy to find on Ebay.... to many Some HI/BI LOW BEAM SOME NOT
Simply amazing.!
Thanks a lot for the idea.!
Do you know if this retrofit projector would fit in a 1998 Jeep Cherokee??
I'm definitely going to try this!! Thank You!!
Wow, wish I had your tools and skills. That's awesome man!
That's some pretty clean hand work brother👍
Looks great on ur car😉
I was looking for this video for a while. Great job, I'll probably follow this for my 240SX headlights
Like the set up with the router
awesome video. These will be on my bike soon!
Great job man. Nice clean work
I would like to see you do the same with the round lighthouse you showed the end , I have a car with that type of headlamp
great video Justin.
what did you do to solve the sharp cut off so the beam of light doesn't go above truck level ?
The headlights are adjustable in the car so I can aim the cutoff to be at just the right level.
How did you account for correct beam height and offset? In Ireland part of the motor test is headlight height and offset.
There are adjustment screws on the headlight mounts in the car that allow me to align the beams.
Cool.Good job ;)
Nice job. Why did you use the tape over using a high end silicone sealant? The radius on the pipe parts looks perfect.
I really enjoyed this video. if you do one on how you mounted and wired them in I would greatly appreciate it! I sure hope to see more miata videos! keep up the good work!
dope custom shrouds!
I saw where you posted a link to the morimoto minis but the link didn’t work. Could you tell me which morimoto you used? Thanks
What kind of beam pattern do you get with these? would have to know it's legal here before I try it
+Chris Duke They have a straight cutoff on low beam, wide beam of light. And as far as legal goes... obviously it isn't DOT approved so no its not "legal". But no cop is going to pull you over for modded headlights, I see too many idiots running around with HID bulbs in their lifted hick trucks with fifty lights on the front and they don't get harassed (they should).
+ferretkiller9454 I imagine they would in the uk.
Great clean job!
Thanks!
Man this video was incredible I'm going to try it out on my trans am
Thanks for posting. I did exactly this project this weekend on some 7x6 lights. Any issues with moisture entering at the bulb socket?
Yes , I ended up using silicone sealant around the bulb and socket to try and keep moisture out.
looks good bro. thanks for the insight. by any chance did u document the conversion from round to 4x6 brackets u fabricated?
I did not.. But I have some pictures I can show you.
Cool thx
That was great! Ive been looking for a way to put projectors in a 4x6 housing without baking them. Your video was super detailed, but I do have a question. How did you set the depth of the projector in the headlight so it wouldnt touch the housing lense? Again, thanks so much for that video
