This is like needing to haul a bunch of large, heavy rocks out of a quarry, showing up in a sub-compact sedan.... Then being genuinely surprised that the vehicle does a terrible job of hauling away the rocks. It was never meant for that job. The Ryobi *angle* grinder was never meant for _that_ job.

Bit of a misleading title. I was expecting you to trash it for being an overall bad tool, and/or under powered. This more of an issue with a specific use case. It's a valid point, but the tool is till not bad for the price (and a much more powerful HP Brushless version is available for those needing more oomph), which you yourself admitted. Comes across as click bait honestly.

"i can only grind at an angle"
You understand it's called an angle grinder, yes?
Part of the reason for that design might be that this isn't a powerful tool, and that grinding with the whole face of the tool would show the lack of power of the tool

Strangely enough Ryobi chose to eliminate a critical feature that's found in their previous model of battery angle grinders, the P420 (which I own). It allows you to rotate the battery out of the way to handle those flush grinding jobs you're trying to do on cement. What a shame that they eliminated that feature.

Serious? How insane for an otherwise savvy company. So.... Now it looks like I will be buying a ridgid grinder. To add to my rigid framing nailer. Which I bought because ryobi didnt sell one. This is izzackly how you force a customer into another brand. So stupid. How does this get past R n D? I was just experiencing the same frustration and decided to look it up and see if anyone else was having this problem. I guess I'm just going to get a corded one for this job. And I know that Ryobi and rigid are both made by ITC corporation but ... My point is still valid and I'm still pissed and I still want to whine about it so there!!! I have a ton of Ryobi tools and normally I love Ryobi (not the old navy blue tools but starting with the green ones}. The prices have been phenomenal and the product is very solid middle of the road if you watch any project farm videos and in some cases better than average for a lot less money. True, that is changing these days, but still a pretty solid value. So F U ryobi for releasing stupid shite.

Face it, this was simply the wrong tool for a specific task. That doesn't make it a bad tool.
Your thumbnail needs to be changed. It states "Do not buy". But in the clip you say its just fine for 90% of the tasks. It would be easy to make the case that it is 100% fit for task for people that have no use for a concrete grinder.
PS Having recently had to grind down some concrete with a similar disk I would advise anyone not to use a cordless grinder of any description for the task. It is a slow, arduous process, which I am sure would chew through the batteries in no time. This is definitely a task for a corded grinder.

Wow.... DO NOT BUY....???? That's your thumbnail.
Do realize the angle grinder was not created for the main purpose of grinding down cement?
I would have to say that the majority of people that buy angle grinders are using them in a different manner that the battery is not going to be an issue.
It sucks that it doesn't work out for your needs but to tell people not to buy it because of that reason is not even reasonable.
A flaw to some but highly unlikely to be noticed by most.
I use angle grinders everyday in multiple situations and I can say there would be very few jobs where that issue would arrive. The grinder is almost always elevated away from a flat surface.

  • @daninnj8580
    @daninnj8580 3 года назад +4

You prove that just because you can BUY all those tools, you don't amazingly acquire the skill to USE them. If you're trying to grind concrete with a $50 battery powered 4.5" ANGLE grinder, the problem isn't the tool - it's the "tool" who's using it.
Ryobi's previous model allowed you to rotate the battery out of the way. They quickly discovered that "tools" like you were using it to do things no reasonable person would attempt to do - just like you are! They decided to discontinue the feature rather than deal with people doing exactly what you were trying to do!
Ryobi makes a VERY affordable 10" 6500 RPM that has TEN amps and is more appropriate for what you want to do. It uses a CORD that plugs into the WALL. Deal with it! Corded tools do BIG jobs. Battery tools do LITTLE jobs. A professional mason uses even BIGGER tools for what you're attempting. The minimum tool (that Ryobi I mentioned) costs a fraction of what you spent on just ONE of those high-end batteries you're so proud of, and actually WORK. Even if you COULD move that battery, you'd chew through DOZENS of those little 4 1/2" grinding disks and maybe burn up the grinder's motor grinding down uneven concrete walkways. At least the home corded version uses larger, thicker and more appropriate discs. To be honest, if your walkway is of any real size, go RENT a big professional grinder.
They have places that do that!
What's funny is that you call yourself a "power tool aficionado" and spent almost half the video trying to impress us with that little shop (really dude? Have you ever seen a real shop?) and my first thought was "Where are all the big-boy tools? Grown-up kind? There's not even a miter saw, a table saw, a drill press, hell I didn't even see a bench vise (although you moved about quickly). Hell, a radial arm saw would likely kill you. You have the space for far better.
The first lesson in ANY tools - use the RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB. You AREN'T.
BTW those really expensive 9 AH batteries you paid $100 each for? They're for CONTRACTORS who need a tool that runs all day without worrying about finding a plug for recharging - often where they work, there isn't one. These guys just want to carry one, maybe 2 batteries for the whole day. YOU DON'T DO THAT. You work at home where there are a dozen more batteries in the shed! They don't make the tool run ANY better! They just make it run longer. You don't NEED that. YOU WASTED $200 FOR NO REASON.
    Just my opinion.

If you want an angle grinder to last more then 6 minutes stick with a corded grinder!

An angle grinder...ANY angle grinder, especially a battery operated grinder, is not the proper tool for grinding down a slab of cement that large. A concrete floor grinder or multi surface grinder should be used instead.

Thanks for your review. I nearly bought a Ryobi grinder but won't now.
I love Ryobi tools but the angle grinder needs modification.

Get a tool that will work for concrete Ryobi is or any of the other ones you have not made for concrete just because you own a bunch of tools does not make you to know what your talking about

just take it to a machine shop and ask them to turn you a spacer. Problem solved.

Entirely wrong tool and wrong approach - that was your problem, NOT the angle grinder.
Think about it this way: if you HIRED a PROFESSIONAL to do this job: WHAT TOOL WOULD THEY USE????
Big hint - NOT a angle grinder.
I would take this misleading video down. You seem like a good dude. Next time go talk to the guys at the contractor's desk or the rental desk and ask them if they have something to help you do ______.

Thumbs down for click bait. Which is too bad because you had a good point about it not being good for that particular application. How ‘bout just honest titles/thumbnail next time 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah. You are just using the wrong tool for the job.

Pretty poor review. Waisted time showing off your other Ryobi tools, then a review of something the tool is not really made for!
