  • FINALLY QUALITY! Ray'z Arcade Chronology (Rayforce Collection) Review! One of the best shmup (shoot em' up) releases of 2023 nearly snuck under my radar! Ray'z Arcade Chronology is a collection of the excellent Rayforce series: Rayforce (Layer Section), RayStorm, and RayCrisis! A lot of us are familiar with Rayforce, it being an arcade classic, but many players, including myself, are less familiar with RayStorm and RayCrisis, which were originally ported to the PS1 and were during that early 3D era of the genre where devs were doing a lot of interesting stuff with dynamic backgrounds and sprite scaling! In today's review, however, I am not so much concerned with the quality of the game themselves, as they have already proved themselves are very strong entries into the genre (hence being in a collection in the first place). Instead, what I really want to investigate is how the games have been ported and if this collection is respectful to the source material, especially when compared to unofficial emulation. There are a lot of game collections out there that look promising on the surface, like the TMNT Cowabunga Collection, or Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha, or the MegaMan X Collection, but when you actually analyze the performance of these games, especially with input lag, the final result is an awful mess.
    What makes this situation even more confusing is that recently Rayforce had another port by City Connection called Layer Section & Galactic Attack S-Tribute, which was laggy and lame. And then on top of that there is another collection coming out called RayStorm x RayCrisis HD Collection - which is actually just an incomplete version of this collection. So overall, if you want to get the heart of what is quality and what is not, this review shall be your guide.
    As of right now the Ray'z Arcade Chronoloyg is available on Nintendo Switch and PS4/PS5. Sadly both PC (Steam) and Xbox got the shaft.

    M2's work is like presenting these games with silk gloves on a velvet pillow, an absolute treat that sets the bar for other developers in this space. I've only recently subscribed to your channel Mark and I love your open and frank coverage and especially the emphasis you put on input lag - more players should be made aware of this to put the onus on developers to focus more resources on this side of development.
    2 frames for Ray'z!? Astounding!! Though, given M2's prior work, I'm not *too* surprised! I cannot wait to get my hands on the physical version of this illustrious collection, I adore Rayforce and Storm + Crisis are a joy as well. Keep up the great work man, quality channel.

      Absolutely!! It's such an important issue for players to be aware of, as it massively degrades the quality of the gameplay and I think is really disrespectful to the original games. And yep, I look at my copy of MMX legacy in anger, shaking my fist at the sky ha.

      Man awhile I certainly would like to think I value good input response, I am certainly not always sensitive or too aware of it as I’ve been playing through X4 again (I originally played it on PS back in the day) via the collection and wouldn’t have thought the input lag was particularly bad. I also use Redream as my Dreamcast emulator of choice which is allegedly on the laggy side but I love it as it just works from the jump and has a super polished interface.

    I’ll be honest, this was one where I was thinking “I know it’s m2 but I’ll probably just stick to shmuparch”, but the in-game leaderboard replays (a personal favorite of mine in any game), the option to use new or original graphics, and the 2 frames of lag sold me on this collection so I just bought it. Thanks for giving us the lowdown

    Yeah this was an instant buy for me.
    NB: Fit to screen is useful if you output onto a CRT via something like a HD-Fury (on the PS4 port for example) as it forces the 1080p to display fullscreen. When you choose the stretched option it ends up being perfect (which I love M2 for, as this was definitely intentional).
    I'd have liked an option for reducing the hitbox for RayForce or a "special" mode but what we've got is pretty damned nice. They included burn-in reduction (appreciated when running it constantly via a CRT cab), contextual rapid-fire (and even emulate the rapid-fire shots from the PCB). They make good shit.... the only thing that felt like they forgot about was that controls can't be rotated (if you wanted to play it in tate but with rotated controls -- that would have been nice on the switch port) but that's really clutching at straws.

    M2 is the hallmark of quality. I'm at a place where I'd buy their games without waiting for reviews. Got this collection for Switch a while back from a JP game seller and it's marvellous. You can even select the soundtrack from the Saturn port (called Layer Section) which I prefer. Rayforce feels a bit more difficult in this collection that on Saturn or MAME. The rank seems to be a bit higher - not sure why that is. I can understand why the Saturn port feels a bit easier but it's odd that playing in MAME feels easier - maybe it's to do with the different versions of the arcade game? The game I play in MAME is called Gunlock!!

    • @TheElectricUnderground

      Yeah M2 are the one developer where I'd feel comfortable picking up their games without a review, but then again I am the reviewer and so I often have to do that anyway lol. Why yet another release with two games instead of three? Quite simple: Strictly Limited Games has released the full collection (content wise the same as Japan release) in limited quantity requiring a pre-order, and later ININ publisher (owned by the same company!) released an incomplete gutted version to the general distribution. It's their standard practice as they already did it a few times for other games. Shady? Sure! Welcome to the world of limited publishing where the FOMO is the king! :(

  • @wargameboy72
    @wargameboy72 Год назад +2

    The reason why it's so confusing is ININ games. ININ games is a Company that has stripped English and content out of games. They have chopped up game collections, so all regions don't get all the games. Even on the Ray Force Collection, they stripped out an unreleased unfinished Ray Force game. That you can only play if you purchased it through Strictly Limited Games. I personally hate when Companies do dirty stuff like that.But don't take my word on it, look it up your self. Anyway, great video. Awesome review I enjoyed it a lot.

    Love Rayforce/Layer Section/Galactic Attack/Gunloc (lol) and love your work. Just a note, "full screen" zooms it to the height of the screen. "Pixel perfect" is integer scaled. So if you go full screen, it won't be as sharp as it's stretching over a fixed number of pixels. Also no idea if that introduces any lag as sometimes there's processing to blend a non-integer scaled image. Also adding scanlines on a non-integer image can often come out wonky (I find that on MiSTer with a lot of filters), but dedicated ports can sometimes fix for this.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  Год назад

      Oh that's some awesome insight!! This is purely a guess but I think the scaler that m2 uses is nearest neighbor which keeps the pixels looking nice and sharp. Pixel perfect does look fantastic but I generally want to try to squeeze out the extra screen real estate. I could see pixel perfect being amazing on a crt though!

    • @peterk1837
      @peterk1837 Год назад

      @@TheElectricUnderground Nice. I go full screen too when in the lounge on the couch. I'm kinda nooby, but yeah I'd say pixel perfect would be best on a crt as you would be converting the sharpest possible image, and from there you can streatch out to full screen using the crt's own geometry options. As crts don't have pixels it won't suffer by stretching. Not sure how much lag is in the digital to analogue conversion though. Depends on method used I guess. Fingers crossed a well coded Rayforce comes to MiSTer one day. I've heard rumours that someone is looking into Batsugun. Only issue is the lack of savestates/training options which will almost always be the case with MiSTer, especially arcade cores.

    Am I one of the only ones who wasn't completely confused by all these different modern ports of the RAY series? I was already aware about that M2 would be involved with the new _RAY_ series collection from news sites I follow and discussing the features of the _Ray'z Arcade Chronology_ and who was handling it. When I also saw the _RayStorm x RayCrisis HD Collection_ being released alongside the _Ray'z Arcade Chronology_ collection, I figured the former would be for those who already own the _Layer Section & Galactic Attack S-Tribute_ port by City Connection (not to mention this wasn't the first time _RayStorm_ and _RayCrisis_ got released as their own bundle pack), but at the same time, I feel even people if they own the City Connection port, they may as well spend the extra $10 and get the complete _Ray'z Arcade Chronology_ anyways since you're getting a vastly superior port of _RayForce_ and more bang for your buck. Granted Taito should have marketed these games better and in all honesty should have consulted M2 to begin with, it would not only saved people $30 in the long run but could have saved Taito a lot of lost resources and money to develop one definitive collection of the _RAY_ series instead of having a two different collections by M2 and a subpar port of a port running under a custom version of Unity by City Connection in the long run. That being said, I cannot wait to get my hands on the _Ray'z Arcade Chronology_ whenever Strictly Limited Games gets the pre-order copies shipped out and play the upcoming Steam port of the collection this Fall. I wish I could afford the Collector's Edition since all of the extra bonus material (the artbook and guidebook, soundtracks, the concert Blu-Ray, etc.), but I'm happy I was able to snag a physical copy for the Switch.

    I just stumbled upon the physical copy of RayStorm HD X RayCrisis collection on Switch. While I'm happy for Switch standards regarding input lag, M2 again forced vsync although the original had it turned off. In G-Darius it's way more noticable since it scrolls horizontally. Instead of "smooth" screen tearing slowdown we get fullscreen stutter which in this case is less noticable. Even less in handheld mode. I really wonder why M2 didn't follow the original way of display and performance.

All of a sudden bullet patterns I found impossible to do anything about in the PS1 port (which was probably a very good port all things considered) I am dodging without even thinking about. It almost feels like cheating sometimes :P If the rest of the industry could match what M2 does in terms of input lag, we'd all be in a much better place now. Actually being able to see all the cool ship, environments, & enemy designs is so refreshing. Which speaking of, with bullet hell games being more about rushing to the top of the screen so you dont have to endure seeing a cool enemy, interrupt your coveted cascade of stars & boxes falling all over the place, im curious, why does bullet hell game devs even create ships & enemys? You focus in on a tiny dot, & kill everything before you see it, seems like you could get a ton more bullet hell titles, without the time needed to create the ships, environments, etc. lol

I was content to skip this release for that reason alone, but I didn't know that Japan got the whole trilogy on a physical cartridge. Definitely renewed my interest. Seriously, I'm not sure what the publisher of the US collection was thinking - maybe that the US audience wouldn't want to play Rayforce because it didn't get the HD treatment like Storm and Crisis got, like that matters somehow.

    I'm so glad I got the Japanese version of this compo instead of ordering from Strictly Limited and having to wait until 2024. To their credit, the long lead times aren't their fault most likely, it just seems like *all* limprint companies have long lead times and it seems like this is an issue with the Western physical industry in general, with the minimum print requirements and lack of demand for shmups relative to AAA games; frankly it's a wonder we get physical releases of R-Type Final 2, Raiden III, and Raiden IV by NISA that can be found in regular stores as opposed to having a short period of time to preorder them then wait like a year. At least SLG is transparent about delays in their products.
    My only real complaints with this compo is that the leaderboards don't show stage reached and there's no real training options besides just making a bunch of savestates.
    My hope is that training options get added in a future update like what happened with G-Darius HD.

    • @TheElectricUnderground

      M2 won't ever remove slowdown ha, even if it's kind of an interesting idea (which I think it could be as an option), they want that arcade accuracy. The switch version only having 12 slots is really stupid, I bet the reason why is because the little images next to the save state slot probably cause the switch loading issues or something. In that case I think they should have dropped the images because 12 slots is not enough. Just another reason to go with the PS4 version for sure.
