It’s important to consider different philosophical perspectives on Nietzsche’s views to better understand various arguments and derive a balanced understanding. Nietzsche’s idea that pity and compassion make a person weak, and that one should strive to become an “Übermensch” or “superhuman” by overcoming these emotions, has been highly controversial in philosophy. Various philosophers have presented arguments both for and against this view, and here we’ll discuss the thoughts and perspectives of some renowned philosophers on Nietzsche’s ideas: 1. Bertrand Russell - Critique of Nietzsche: Bertrand Russell strongly opposed Nietzsche’s ideas. According to Russell, Nietzsche’s philosophy limits human life to concepts of “power” and “strength,” ignoring higher emotions like compassion, love, and cooperation. Russell believed that compassion and empathy are essential for human society’s progress, fostering brotherhood and social harmony. For Russell, these qualities form the foundation of civilization. 2. Jean-Paul Sartre - Defense of Nietzsche: Jean-Paul Sartre partially supported Nietzsche’s theory. Sartre’s philosophy of “existentialism” emphasizes that a person is responsible for their actions and life choices. He believed that individuals should make their own decisions and be self-reliant. Sartre thought that if compassion limits one’s autonomy, it could indeed be a burden. In his view, people should take responsibility for their lives while relying less on others. 3. David Hume - Opposition to Nietzsche: David Hume considered pity and compassion as essential elements of human morality. He believed that humans are naturally social and empathetic beings, and through compassion, we feel others’ pain and help them. According to Hume, without compassion, people would become self-centered, and social cohesion would erode. For Hume, Nietzsche’s view that compassion makes one weak goes against basic moral principles. 4. Arthur Schopenhauer - A Strong Stance Against Nietzsche: Schopenhauer praised pity and compassion as noble human qualities. He argued that individuals should go beyond self-interest and show empathy for others. Schopenhauer believed that compassion is necessary to alleviate the suffering and pain in the world. Nietzsche’s theory, which labels compassion as a weakness, could make society harsher and more indifferent, according to Schopenhauer. 5. Ayn Rand - Support of Nietzsche’s Theory: Ayn Rand incorporated some of Nietzsche’s ideas into her philosophy of “Objectivism.” She argued that individuals should be self-interested and prioritize their own needs. Rand believed that compassion and pity for others divert people from their goals and make them weak. In her view, if everyone took full responsibility for their lives and prioritized their own happiness, it would lead to individual strength and societal progress. 6. Albert Camus - A Different Perspective on Nietzsche: Albert Camus, a philosopher of “Absurdism,” partly agreed with Nietzsche’s ideas but did not completely reject compassion. Camus believed that life is inherently meaningless, but that doesn’t imply people should be indifferent. He proposed a balanced approach, suggesting that individuals accept life’s absurdity while embracing compassion as part of personal fulfillment. Like Nietzsche, Camus valued autonomy but also saw compassion as meaningful. Conclusion Philosophers who opposed Nietzsche argue that compassion and pity are foundational to society, making us morally better individuals. They see Nietzsche’s theory as leading toward self-centeredness and eroding social bonds. On the other hand, philosophers who support Nietzsche’s ideas argue that prioritizing self-reliance and individuality can make people stronger and more independent. Thus, Nietzsche’s theory is somewhat valid in emphasizing self-reliance and strength, but rejecting compassion and pity altogether might make humanity indifferent and unbalanced.

Various philosophers have presented arguments both for and against this view, and here we’ll discuss the thoughts and perspectives of some renowned philosophers on Nietzsche’s ideas:
1. Bertrand Russell - Critique of Nietzsche:
Bertrand Russell strongly opposed Nietzsche’s ideas.
2. Jean-Paul Sartre - Defense of Nietzsche:
Jean-Paul Sartre partially supported Nietzsche’s theory.
3. David Hume - Opposition to Nietzsche:
David Hume considered pity and compassion as essential elements of human morality. He believed that humans are naturally social and empathetic beings, and through compassion, we feel others’ pain and help them. According to Hume, without compassion, people would become self-centered, and social cohesion would erode. For Hume, Nietzsche’s view that compassion makes one weak goes against basic moral principles.
4. Arthur Schopenhauer - A Strong Stance Against Nietzsche:
Schopenhauer praised pity and compassion as noble human qualities.
5. Ayn Rand - Support of Nietzsche’s Theory:
Ayn Rand incorporated some of Nietzsche’s ideas into her philosophy of “Objectivism.” She argued that individuals should be self-interested and prioritize their own needs. Rand believed that compassion and pity for others divert people from their goals and make them weak. In her view, if everyone took full responsibility for their lives and prioritized their own happiness, it would lead to individual strength and societal progress.
6. Albert Camus - A Different Perspective on Nietzsche:
Albert Camus, a philosopher of “Absurdism,” partly agreed with Nietzsche’s ideas but did not completely reject compassion.
Conclusion
Philosophers who opposed Nietzsche argue that compassion and pity are foundational to society, making us morally better individuals.
