I think this is the best presentation of an evolutionary explanation of religion that I’ve ever seen. I plan to forward it to everyone I know who’s open to interpreting religion from a scientific point of view.
He seems to have missed (or not covered here) the sense in which the old mystically-driven religious impulse is embedded in all of the major relgiions as something akin to "enlightenment." Even if understood as a relatively mundane tweak of experience that makes life 10% less stressful, that thread never disappeared (e.g. Hermeticism, Brahmanism, Taoism, Buddhism, Plotinus, Sufism, Chrisitian mystics, etc) and is more well-articulated than ever with the cross-pollenation of traditions and the research done by psychology and neuroscience in recent decades.
For centuries, they killed or tortured everyone who wouldn't go along with the scam. This crime syndicate survived by the commission of crimes against humanity; not because they're so sweet and wonderful.
It is human nature. Atheism has not been all sweetness and light, not under communism and the next atheistic thing in the pipeline trans humanism might not be so great either.
These lecturers usually compare animals and humans biologically. I am waiting for him to mention human reason and what role human reason and the ability to use reason and discrimination through reason makes. So far he staying with the biology a sort of determinism. Maybe reason will come up but I would not count on it as the monkey comparison goes on.
I did grow up in a Catholic religious community where we all went to the same school from 5yrs we all socialised in the same clubs youth and sporting clubs and guides we all went to the same church we only ever visited the houses of those in our parish. I didn’t expand my experience of where I was living in terms of speaking daily with people not from my parish until I was 18yrs and went to Art school the complete opposite of what I grew up in. I pretty much hated the church from 5 years old I remember seeing the priests and knowing very defiantly that not one of them was holy. They were fake and I grew up knowing most of what I was in was fake and bad. I was very isolated and pretty much hated primary school but couldn’t communicate it to anyone because there was no where to go or be different. The monks and priests came to everyone’s house to talk about life and being close to God and I knew that they were not connected but had to pretend like they knew things. I never socially bonded to my congregational experiences it was a very ordered system with a lot of expectations rules and singular view points. Only when I was an adult and not in contact with it I heard about all the deep depression many families were experiencing but unable to show or speak about as containment of family dis function was everything. Some data might show endorphins and bonding for some people but it is possible to be inside ceremony, social order and what is defined as community but is not operating as community and be displaced, isolated and trapped. This does not produce endorphins. I think the presentation of what is community actually is very complicated. I rejected what I was seeing from 5 years old I don’t know what did that but it was instinctual and it turned out to be valid. So the bonding process is I think working on levels far deeper than ceremony going through mass. Like me you can do it 1000s of times and never bond. There is something generated inside the human psyche that is about being true, not adopting roles or behaviour or copying it to fit in. You can even fool yourself with mimicking ritual behaviour. I think the corrupting force in social settings that sound like they care, is power. Human beings really like power. I think you get humans that get addicted to it and build falsehoods upon it so deeply they genuinely don’t know they have done it. But the religious community I was in wanted over riding control on behaviour on attending church on recreating the same message to follow not to find your own voice. Finding your own path, thinking your own thoughts figuring things out for yourself actually creates a little power house or resource of inner confidence and peace. It’s your little house of peace that then helps you either create peace where there is division or expose wrongs and call it out to allow truth to be genuine and actually heart felt. I have ended up working in Community Education and knowing first hand about feeling isolated allows me to be more aware of non verbal communication where stress is hiding. Sometimes it’s just the way you look at another person in their eyes to show you care but you do have to truly care cos humans know if you don’t even if they can’t explain it we communicate with feelings and a lot of these feelings are not attached to words.
Dunbar is good at swooping around vast swathes of history but that inevitably overlooks some events. Over the past 2M years there have been dozens of Green Sahara episodes, for instance. If you look at temples and cathedrals you see the pillars as sacred groves and the spaces as great caves. He is charismatic but I wish he did not gigle all the time at his own weak jokes.
The Christian faith is not a religion, but the imperial political party of ancient Rome. It is the world's first ideological political party used to purge the Roman government for loyalty to the creed under Constantine in 326.
Random without a prototype is on the ball? i suppose it has to be. Another point with science today not understanding consciousness, is it fundamental and mind, is it elemental emerging with quantum events is problematic. Materialists who have some understanding of the elements only are disadvantaged in this respect. So far he is on about history and language I do not understand what any of this has to do with religion although it does because it has to do with the gods.
This is educated rubbish... totally missing what is really going on in different communities + how the rituals + practices of religion were developed to support people at difficult times in their lives... 😟 From there, religion degenerated into a tool for social control + power shared between religion + the state... but Dunbar has curvature of the spine which is something else he has apparently ignored life-long + failed to address spinal health + body maintenance to his own detriment... such is the foolishness of appearing clever + satisfied with one's own ideas...

Utterly convincing. I buy it. Now deliver it to my front door fully packaged. Anything other subject this guy takes on I'd like to see.
