This SNL performance was right after Kurt Cobain died, Eddie honor his friend at the end of the show he put a K on his t-shirt and put his hand on his heart. Thank You Rory and Aaron for sharing this awesome video. Pearl Jam also performed "Rearviewmirror" you heard the beginning at the end of "Not For You". PJ also appeared on SNL in 1992. Awesome reaction Rory!! 😊💓🤘✌️

That riff at the end of the video is from their song "rearview mirror". That SNL performance of that song is AMAZING. You should do it.

This song was actually off their third album, Vitalogy, which is considered by many to be their best. Also, by 1993 the stage performance had chilled out a bit. I think they realized they couldn’t maintain that pace forever. People will often talk about the “VS/ Vitalogy Era” of Pearl Jam. Both albums were quite a departure from the sound of the “Ten Era”, Ten being their first album. Welcome to the Pearl Jam rabbit hole!

He looks so annoyed during the whole thing and channels it into angst for the song. This is the fastest turnover ever bro! Lol thanks!!

Btw if you liked his voice on this check out “do the evolution”. There’s 2 videos for it, ones all cartoon and ones half live half cartoon. Do the half and half

Annoyed, yeah. But thebn I think this song--seems to me anyhow--is a slam on thoise non-grungers whpo just jumped on the PJ/Nirvana, etc bandwagon cos it was becoming a gravy train. "This is not for you!" Maybe not, but that's what I hear.

Enjoyed the reaction, LMAO when you saw the evidence of the VCR tape rewinding and u were like "Damn! This IS old!" LOL, Sheeeit--I remember when VHS was cutting edge! Speaking of how old I am, I saw this live in '94, and remember wondering if Eddie/PJ would somehow honor Kurt Cobain, who had just dishonered himself. Sure enuf, at the end of this song, Eddie opens up his short and gestrured to his heart. An embroidered-on-the-shirt "K." Awwww...

Watch the live show. It was awesome (as Chris Farley used to say). Back then it blew me away that they performed 3 songs and not the usual 2. Got it on vhs somewhere in all my junk

Saw this tour Summer of '94. One of the best ever for me. The Ramones opened up for them. "1-2-3-4!!" Or was it '95? This was off their "Vitalogy" album. Their 3rd

Great review. This appearance on SNL (1994) was actually a couple years AFTER their Unplugged set on MTV in 1992. So, at this point their performances were beginning to calm down a little. The other song they performed that night was “Rearviewmirror”, which is also definitely worth watching. Imo, it’s one of their best songs.
If you keep going down the rabbit hole, you’ll see that Eddie’s voice, and the band’s sound in general, evolves and matures over time. I’m enjoying your reactions. I hope you keep going. If you haven’t seen it yet, I would suggest watching the animated “Do The Evolution”, their brilliantly done video with biting social commentary.

Also did Daughter. I believe the only time ever on SNL when a band got 3 songs. Pearl Jam was just so huge during this time

He was younger in the Unplugged ('92 vs. '94). Their music was more 'angry' in their 2nd (Vs.) and 3rd (Vitalogy) albums. This so g was from the Vitalogy album.

I think you hit on something with the Neil Young comparison. PJ collaborated and toured with Neil Young around the time the Vitalogy album was release and there's a lot of Neil Young influence in that album, IMO.

You should watch them perform this at Wrigley Field in 2016. I think it's way better. His voice was and still is amazing. I believe they just finished a tour and there ars lots of videos on here of concerts in 2023.
