    Autism and ADHD are not "chronic diseases", but neurodevelopmental disorders/conditions, which people are born, grow up, and die with and which form a large part of our personality. Neurodevelopmental disorders are not diseases, for the same reason blindness, deafness, and paraplegia are not. They are disabilities.
    Furthermore, the term "Asperger Syndrome" is outdated and increasingly rejected by autistic community. The current term for it is "autism spectrum disorder with support level 1", or simply "level 1 autism".

    • @ChelleLlewes
      @ChelleLlewes Месяц назад

      And for some of us, autism is not even disabling, and yet, it is still classified as a disability, which makes it frustrating to try and get a proper diagnosis!

    • @robfbms
      @robfbms Месяц назад

      @@ChelleLlewes Autism spectrum is disabling in some way for every autistic people, since impairments such as struggling to socialize among non-autistic people and understand nonverbal communication are mandatory for the diagnosis of autism to be possible.
      Furthermore, autism is a disability not only biologically speaking, but also socially, since all autistic people has their impairments aggravated when faced with social barriers and ableism and when they do not have access to inclusive support.
      The classification of ASD as a disability cannot prevent autistics from getting a diagnosis, since the diagnosis is essential to improve the autistic's quality of life and enable their access to specialized therapies and disability rights. Physicians who refuse to diagnose autism under the pretext that it's supposedly not necessary or possible to diagnose disabilities are making a serious mistake and should be avoided.

      @@frenzyviz6296 Je n'ai pas d'objection moi non plus à utiliser le terme « syndrome Asperger »; j'avais 27 ans quand le psychiatre m'a diagnostiqué « Asperger ». Cependant, il y a deux ans il m'a dit qu'on n'employait plus ce terme et comme je posais des questions, je voyais qu'il semblait embarrassé et ne voulait pas trop s'attarder sur ce sujet. Je lui ai montré un livre sur la vie du docteur Hans Asperger et m'avait alors demandé de lui résumer. Malheureusement il est décédé en janvier 2024.

    • @actipton80
      @actipton80 22 дня назад

      I was diagnosed with High Functioning autism in the 80's and switched to Asperger's in the 90's. If I had it by itself, I don't think it would be disabling, but I have multiple eye problems, sensory integration dysfunction, and motor impairments that I can hide but still majorly impact me, all in addition to the autism. The Asperger people on this list are fortunate that they don't seem to have any comorbid conditions, but a lot of us do. I still prefer the term Asperger Syndrome, because that label doesn't depend on how other people perceive my support needs or how well I can blend in with non-autistic people.

      My youngest daughter was finally diagnosed with ADHD last year at 32 years old. When she was little there was no info about how girls present with ADHD. We just treated her like an extra high energy kid. We put her in dance, we worked with her energy etc. At 29 she had two BAs and Master Degree. She would never have been able to achieve this without ADHD. She' s a triple threat musical actress plus an amazing choreographer. She teaches at a university. The point is ADHD can be a gift! Oh, and no meds until she was diagnosed last year.
