Gotta admit, Witchfinder General is one hell of job title.

Reminds me of the job I just left. So much gossip there. I was literally accused at least once a month of not finishing this paperwork, or turning in that paperwork. So much so, that I made copies of everything with my signature on it. Why did they try to make me leave? Because they thought I should just "suck it up buttercup" and put up with slandering and being treated like I'm incompetent. They didn't like the fact that I found a way to protect myself.

@@Mercmad Actually other way around. There were witch triles off and on from the 1500s. This particular round was in the 1630-50. The Salem trials happened in 1692-93.

This happened during Charles I reign, however James I was actually quite a successful King and had managed to keep a lid on the religious turmoil which was sweeping Europe at this point with the start of the 30 years war.

@@user-bl6vb3vk5qIn fact King James I had returned from Denmark to Scotland, he had travelled there regarding his marriage to Anne of Denmark. Yes he did write a book called Demonology. King James I was very much like other European Protestant rulers of the period as far as witchcraft is concerned, I don't believe he should be singled out for particular criticism. Circa 50,000 Witches were executed after trial in Europe, mostly in Germany and other Protestant regions.

Whilst Hopkins and Stearne were evidently avaricious and demented religious zealots, the type which are common place in all societies and seen by the behavior during the Covid Pandemic, reporting people for imagined infringements of illegal laws for an imaginary disease, or Nazi Germany, Cambodia under Pol Pot etc. We should always remember that many of those hanged for witchcraft did believe they had real powers for good or bad and we do ourselves a disservice if we do not recognize this. A moaning blond with a nose ring pouting about injustice is no replacement for historical research, reading and study. Sadly a large majority of people seem to think it is.
