    I think finding the best water source coming out of the ground high in the mountain is best ( not foolproof ) but better than trusting a filter with poor water in the first place . Thanks for your video this makes sense .

    Those images we see in books about filtering may be from times when things were cleaner in general, maybe 80 + years ago,, and just reprinted again and again, thanks for this valuable information relating to 2019.

      Well its still going strong in some material, so I`m not sure. But it is a good filter for filtering. But not for purifying.

    Greetings from a retired microbiologist and ex-member of the UK Royal Army Medical Corps Reserves. I am with you in everything you say apart from "capsules of bacterias"**. I do not understand this unless you mean colonies of bacteria inside organic material e.g. rotting meat, or bacterial spores.
    I'd also add that primary filtration through tightly woven sacking (see Millbank bag - weighs less than 1Kg) would significantly speed up the process and increase yield.
    I was particularly impressed that you cited a minimum of 121ºC for 15 mins in a pressure vessel (=autoclave @ 1 atmosphere) to actually sterilise instead of just boiling @100ºC.
    ** Your English is 99.999% better than my Norwegian, but singular 'bacterium' is Latin. The Latin plural is bacteria not bacterias. Maybe my Latin is better than yours!! 😬 . Sent with respect, not as a nasty keyboard warrior.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  5 лет назад +3

      No worries at all my friend.
      First of all, my English is not to good, but usually I make myself understood. When diving into more technical and biological terms, it is harder to find the right words.
      About capsules of bacteria, it just came out together with capsulated viruses like in spores. I used to work as an designer and engineer making decontamination systems for human vaste from hospital quarantine rooms. And I remember one of the main specialists from the hospital was talking about these spores with viruses that would be a challenge to kill, even with sterilizing. I agree with you, I have not heard of any capsulated bacteria. I mean there are usually larger colonies in organic material like small dissolved pieces of feces from humans or animals, rotten organics like meat etc. And if they are in the water for boiling, there can be a chance not all of them get killed. Depending of the piece of organic materiel and more.
      The main point with this video is to inform that a filter like this will not produce purified drinking water as some claims.
      I`m glad you commented, and made this clear. :)

    Good to see you back, my boreal brother.
    I was often in Norway, and drank a lot of water out of the open (no filter or anything).
    But it's good that you give this information for people from the lowlands or and more polluted areas.

      I tend to drink right from a stream if it is in the highland and I know its not a farm or any houses further up. Still it can be a dead animal or a moose pooping in the stream up ahead ;) Never got sick yet.

    I bought a sawyer filter, so I'm pleased you think it is good too. The instructions state that it will not deal with viruses as they can be so small, but that they are unlikely to be encountered in the wild generally. Very interesting channel, thanks.

    Hey guys he is correct about what he says. You can tell he’s military and we all have been trained to utilize different techniques to purify water. But if you do not compact you DIY filtration properly then the risk of disease is common. Boiling water with certain bacteria can withstand high temperatures. I am a African American and grew up eating chitterlings. Certain parasites can with stain rheumatic fever where the internal temps can reach 120 degrees. We cook them for a minimal of 3 hours to kill the little buggers. People say to boil your water for 10 minutes when it should be at least 15 to 20 minutes!!!! When we had E-coli scares the state surgeon general made the public boil water for twenty minutes to kill all the nasty little bugs. People have become careless with cleaning water and gotten to complacent with the straws. Do not disagree with a lot he’s telling you. There was an experiment in my childhood encyclopedia that we performed using fish tanks and other materials, with a water pump. The experiment yielded clean drinkable water. But the process was based off a water recycling center. The old process with certain types of rocks that help in the process of exposing bacteria to sunlight and if added a chlorination process as well. But stuck with same process he’s doing in the plastic bottle. And yield bacteria free water. But the process was not exactly the same as the bottle but very close. There are other factors that you can use. But certain rocks help in the sterilization process. You guys just don’t remember the old ways to stay safe. And trusting people out there who mimic others that will get you killed trying get 15 minutes of bullshit

    Very important video, man - the bottle filter is basically a mechanical filter and if the water is for drinking it really needs to be boiled.
    I will drink directly from springs and used to drink from rivers and streams but now I tend not to drink directly from streams or rivers due to the amount of toxins in the environment.

      @@harrymills2770 I suppose that in a natural ecosystem everything is everywhere so that doesn't surprise me. Worst experience I had drinking water from a stream was from a beautiful clear stream way up in the hills in an ancient forest - as I was lying on a flat rock drinking from a pool I noticed a smell of death and looked up to see a disintegrating sheep caught up in a fallen tree which had been washed there during a recent flood. Between where I was drinking and the sheep the floor of the stream was littered with maggots which had dropped out of the sheep but the water tasted fine and didn't give me any problems, lol

    I'm a food scientist, but not a survival expert. So, I may know only enough to be dangerous. But my understanding is that you need "activated" carbon. In a survival situation you first burry the hot coals for a day or two to finish burning and then cool in absence of air. Second you still boil the water for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria and inactivate viruses. You have to let the water cool fully after boiling, then filter it.

    I spent 3 months in the woods last Winter. I experimented with several filtration methods. The first system I used was the Berkey ceramic filter and it performed poorly or I should say it did not perform at all. I used a t-shirt pre-filter over the top container and filled it. I waited 24 hours and the yield was about two and a half cups. I think the reason why it did not filter was because the cold temperatures affected the size of the pores in the ceramic.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  5 лет назад

      Interesting, I dont know to much about that. I know some of these filters can brake without you knowing it, like the Sawyer, if it freeze it can crack inside, and then let particles pass thru. And its no way to tell.

    Well spoken. Shit in - Shit out. Important to beware of. So much circular reproduction on YT. If ideas are being reproduced a certain number of times, and by the "right" people, it becomes a truth, no matter if the idea is good or bad. A lot of the knowledge regarding outdoor life is just reproduced anecdotal information.

    There have been a discussion about UV light from the sun and if that is enough to kill organisms. I have found documents from UNICEF /WHO that say it will, and its a proven method used in disaster areas. Check following page: www.sodis.ch and you will also find info about it on UNICEF pages.

      @@tracker5849 As far as I know the steripen will work great. It has a UV-light in the spot-on area. The nice thing is tht they send you a new one when its out. May not be very simple in a crisis, but still, it will purify a lot of water before it runs out.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  5 лет назад

      Yes UV-light kill organismes in the water. There have been a discussion here in the comment field about UV light from the sun and that it will not be effective. I have done more research and found it will be effective. Even the UNICEF and WHO has a program for doing this for household clean water in areas where its hard to get clean water other ways. They say to keep PET bottles in the house for this. When needed fill them with clear water(filtered if needed) and put them up on a slanted roof towards the sun for a periode. They say 6-24h. I have learned that 12 hours in direct sunlight will do. In cloudy weather up to 48 hours. The thing is, as soon as you open a bottle, it will be subject for re-decontamination. But as long as you not open more than you are going to use, its not an issue.

      To clarify. There is 3 types of UV light. UVA, UAB, UVC. UV light that kills almost everything(bacteria, viruses even humans) UVC this type of light is filtered in the upper parts of earth atmosphere. UVA and UVB reaches surface but is not that great in killing.

    The books if they say makes pure water is bad advert, but 99% say it makes it safer to drink then drinking the still water you use. Another point in a bug out or survival situation using any sort of filter you can make is going to help. If your in a situation you need to survive nearly 100% of people dont carry the special equipment needed in there backpack. My point is the only use for these filters is to SURVIVE the best you can. Stop being dismissive of peoples help in anyway. If your dumb and you are using a bush filter for fun your just an idiot. Please note that the filter and tablets your advertising are not 100% they just make it safer than what it would be.
