- Evisu was formally born in Osaka, Japan in 1991 although the research and planning necessary to reproduce the perfect pair of vintage jeans had been going on for several years prior to this.The founder, and still the owner, of Evisu is Hidehiko Yamane. Yamane-san was trained as a tailor but his love for vintage jeans and his disappointment with the mass-produced modern versions led him firstly, to the vintage clothing import business and then, revolutionarily, to start putting together the elements required reproducing vintage-style jeans. This required the gathering together of all the various bits of machinery, none of which had been produced for at least 40 years, which are required to make authentic vintage jeans.
The initial production line allowed about 14 pairs of jeans a day to be produced and each of them was lovingly hand-painted with the now famous seagull logo by Yamane-san himself. Evisu (also written as Evis or Ebisu) is the name of the Japanese Buddhist god of money who is usually portrayed with a fish and fishing rod. This name was selected for the new venture as money and fishing are two of Yamane-san's five favourite things (the others being beer, women and golf - in no particular order).Although initially Evisu was more a labour of love than a commercial venture, Evisu jeans captured the imagination of the detail-obsessed, Japanese fashion crowd, spurring a revival of interest in vintage denim which has now spread around the world. In the early nineties Yamane-san introduced a tailoring line, followed by a fishing range and a golf range. In 1999 he introduced a ladies fashion line called Evisu Donna to complete the development of Evisu as a full-fashion range going far beyond a jeans brand. Evisu now has 25 shops in Japan. In 1994 Yamane-san was visited by Peter Caplowe who became an immediate convert to the Evisu ethos. They formed a partnership to develop Evisu outside Japan that now spans the globe, selling in 400 of the world's best boutiques and department stores. Despite this phenomenal growth Evisu still remains true to its artisan roots with a fanatical devotion to quality and authenticity while maintaining those two other vital ingredients of the Evisu magic potion - humor and irreverence.

I’m so glad to finally learn about evisu... even in raw denim communities the name goes under the radar. There are so many amazing denim brands at this point from all over the world making repros, handwoven, or specialty raw denim, so really there is much less need for evisu.

I still own 2 pair. One from the Heritage line with the painted red tab (Levi's gimmick) which is awesome but I don't wear them anymore because they're HUGE! And one pair of Nakame Minami, signed by designer Kanji at Amsterdam fashionweek, which I'm starting to wear regularly again... They're both over 10 years old and beautiful. Nice to see this vid!

I live in Amsterdam and when im wearing one of my EVISU jeans a lot of people recognise the brand. In the 0's everybody in Amsterdam was wearing it, it was the Gucci/Balenciaga etc of that era.

Palace x Evisu collab coming out this week may help. I was explaining to my friend about Evisu & shared this vid w/ him. I used to really love the brand. One of my favourite pairs of jeans is a selvedge pair of Evisu jeans. It’d be good to see it come back. For the money though there r other brands that I’d prefer now.

Just copped some japanese raw denim from fear of god. Fell in love with the fabric. Now I got the bedazzled Evisu denim jacket from.the website on the way and a couple shirts. Paying my dues brotha. Evisu is a loud, but cool brand, with a cool story.
When it came to Evisu, Red Monkey, LRG and Tru Religion, Evizu most definitely took the #1 spot in my book...

I remember Evisu was pretty present in Germany at the end of the 90ies/ beginning of the new millenium. Unfortunately I had no money to get myself anything from Evisu back then. But I always loved their design language.
yeah they make a more affordable line now but its limited. Also if your ever on ebay they got tons of pairs that are really cheap. So hopefully the brand stays non hyped for now and prices are low

You didn't mention the South Korean fake Evisu. In South Korea, Evisu counterfeits have been legitimately sold in "Evisu" stores because a Korean counterfeit maker got the license before Evisu in Japan. So, all the "Evisu" stores in Korea sell fake Evisu products that are in a way authentic.

I don't know if it's the same news program, but the link is below. In the footage, Mr. Yamane roughly says, "If you want to copy us and make high quality jeans, then go ahead and do it, we'll compete with you. But stealing the logo only...and selling poor quality jeans, that is a no-no."

hey bro, i wanna say Japan Evisu is totally different from Internaltional EVISU no matter in terms of quality ,design, and figure. You can also say that they are two totally different product. One (JP) is genuine denim , the other one is fashionable things just like HM , Uniqlo ....
Moreover, i wanna say you can buy the Japanese EVISU denim from one website called "denimio". it is really not that hard to get one EVISU
One of the most obvious feature to check out whether your EVISU is from Japan or not is the small red flag at the back of the pocket
one more thing , the stores outside Japan have no relations with Yamane. He had sold the right to use "EVISU" brand outside of JP for one group (i forgot the name) . As a result, if there will be EVISU store in US in the future, it is still not the authentic EVISU in my point of view.

But I gave a general comparison towards the end of this video of international website compared to the Japan stores. As far as I know Ed Hardy is still big in Asia as well. There are far less people walking around in Asia though with Ed Hardy clothin on but they still have physical stores in Hong Kong and China from last time I visited. Also they just did a collab with ASSC that was actually decent. check it out if you got time and thanks for watching!
