    I really quite like this one. I wish that the bracelet version had been out a few months ago though! Grrrrrr. Why did Seiko take a classic design and make it so bloody unattainable? Thank goodness for the Chinese pirates, eh? Cheers, Jody

      Keeping share holders happy? By making a limited edition 1.100 piece run of SLA037 at $6.300? Let's say they sold only 50.000 copies of a lower spec $500 version of this instead - the R&D would even cost a lot less on the cheaper version not to mention the machining/assembly per unit. You do the math!

      That's because they have such an extensive line that you'll always find other Seikos that are great. How they did the 62mas re-issue bugs me enough to almost swear them off, however. I might even have been willing to pay $4000 for one, but, they made sure that if you didn't jump in soon enough, they'd all be gone. How does that even qualify as a "re-issue"?? While these movements are great, they're not shouldn't be in watches costing $400 - $1000. Seiko's are now overpriced and I can get a better deal on Swiss Autos on the grey market. @@scottsj4625 indeed they are increasing their price and whether it justifies or not, it will be up to individual to decide.
      throughout horology journey of mine that span 2 decades, I dont have much exp with seikos, I kicked off with an omega, subsequently rolexs, pan... and others so on so forth. I only came across seiko just few years ago when I had my first 6r15 ~ not impressed, not overly disappointed either as with couple of hundred dollars, I cant compliant. but it looks like seiko is increasing the price substantially but with pretty much the same quality, to me that is disappointing.
      and interestingly I acquired a 5626 9040 a year ago, cost wee little more than my 6r15, and man it's old but I was blown away by its quality from movement (cosc) to dial, hands, finely polished applied indices and the case design and level of polishing... I mean I started wondering, seiko absolutely has (or had) the ability to make watches as good as any swiss better rivals... they chose not to do that. and given the amount I paid for this brilliant piece, it just put the 6r15 cocktail time to shame. my only compliant (personal preference )to this watch is it's a dress watch which I dont get to enjoy it very often....pity.
      so it comes back to the question, why couldn't seiko continues making watches like that... I can only explain this that seiko is trying make more profit. unfortunately in a way like giving 50% of effort and asking for a 200% return.

I don't change the batteries but the one she got me when I turned 16 was a digital watch ahead of its time. It has 5 lines of text. This is 1981. I say maybe find a seiko 62mas dial to swap out the San Martin one. it probably won't be cheap being a genuine seiko part
    But, you'd still be in a very comfortable price range to play the part a little more authentically.

    The only difference between San Martin and the plethora of other ali express, NH35 equipped Seiko homages from what looks like the same factory seems to be the superior bracelets and straps. For the price difference though, I would personally just go with one of the cheaper NH35 specials, buy an aftermarket seiko bracelet from somewhere like geckota and use the money saved for a nice dial mod, they are all pretty much identical regardless.

    Another GREAT JOMW video! How do you find all these gems?? I 100% agree with you. Your marketing model makes MUCH more sense than whoever is driving the Seiko company now-a-days. Seiko could have made the $4000 SLA017 for the collectors & investors to have their fun with. THEN made a working man (diving man?) version for the rest of us regular joes. I am not knocking the San Martin - they clearly stepped in where Seiko feared to tread. They saw a niche and filled it. Sounds & looks like San Martin did a good job as well. But it would have had that certain extra appeal if it was actually made by the original maker & had Seiko on the dial. I guess we are all just shaking our heads over Seiko missing this particular boat.

    Beware of San Martin! i bought the Datejust homage and received it with the dial completely misaligned, they refused to send me the free return ticket promised and wanted me to pay 45 euros to return it. Aliexpress didnt help either because according to them, the seller was communicating even though they didnt help. Very disappointed by the watch and this awful experience.

    I'm glad someone said that about Seiko! I love my SKX, but it could've been so much better. For the same price of my now scratched up hardlex 009, I'd definitely prefer this San Martin domed sapphire--with a better movement. Seiko's got a little too much puff in their chest methinks... I like that these Chinese homage companies are picking models that are either insanely hard/expensive to find or in colors Seiko doesn't offer, but still putting Seiko movements in them. There's already an SKX one out there with the rare bullet markers, so I'm sure we'll now see more on that front a la the classic Turtle homages.

    I really cannot find a better overall all-around diver than the seiko srpb51 samurai, IMO has great quality, reliable movement good finishing, original and functional aesthetic, is not a homage, looks modern yet not out of elegance, has a great bezel action, has ceramic bezel mods available for aftermarket, and so on. To me it's the best diver watch under 1K

    I would prefer companies like San Martin to offer a graphic logo rather than a written one. Let's face it the Chinese do not understand how naff the names are that they choose but we the buyers do and the more expensive the watch the more self-conscious a bad name can make the wearer. A blank space does not work for me so any kind of logo type set up would do.

    • @possumsam2189

      @@emdeka94 Depends. The brands you are referring to are atypical microbrands (Carnival/Reef Tiger etc.).
      They are NOT Watchmakers (More like assemblers & rebranders but I digress) or were mass-manufactured in a factory in Shenzhen/Guangzhou.
      In a sense, they are trying to sell a product and something as frivolous as branding is a bonus not a necessity.
      Shanghai/Zuanshi, Tianjin Seagull, Beijing & other historical Chinese brands have always consistently announced their country of origin with pride.
      And they are the ones with actual heritage that re-defined Made-in-China in my book.

    • @possumsam2189
      @possumsam2189 5 лет назад

      The Chinese do understand the names, which is why they chose the most inoffensive ones like 'Binger', 'Carnival' or 'CIGA Design' etc.
      Tbh, because Chinese watches are inherently 'foreign', any name they chose would be ridiculed either way or already under patent.

    Thanks for the video. It has a lot of good information in it. Not bad for 200 dollars if it does not fall apart on you. I get nervous with microbrands and never heard of this one. Who knows what the SKS series will go for now that they discontinued it. I have not seen the new Seiko 5 line up or real prices. 4000 dollars is just nuts for a Seiko. I think you can get a nice Grand Seiko USED for that kind of price and a much better watch. or you could get just about any Modern Tudor, Omega, and the list goes on and on. Not sure why Seiko keeps raising prices.

      Scott SJ They’re moving “ upmarket “ ,-on the advice of a consultant group who told them they need to go upmarket to compete with smart watches. Smart watches are threatening to do to traditional watches what quartz did to the Swiss.

    • @scottsj4625
      @scottsj4625 5 лет назад

      @@gregsolovieff6711 Smartwatches? Well, the problem with smartwatches is they go out of date. They are already on the 4th generation of the apple watch and who knows how many generations of iPhones and Ipads they have made. A decent watch will last a long time. I think they are just trying to make a larger profit margin. The SKX and Seiko 5 share the same old outdated movement that can't hack or wind it. As far as competing with the swiss that is what the President of Seiko said, they want to complete with the swiss watches with their Grand Seiko watches. The advantage of decent smartwatches is they can track your steps, take your pulse maybe calorie intake. It seems more of a health product to me.
