Watching these tournaments back in the 80s on ABC brings back a lot of memories. I got into bowling watching these great Bowlers. Still enjoy watching these old tournaments.
I couldn't agree more. I would watch with my Grandma (who bowled for 50 years and actually bowled a 300 game once) my Mom and my brothers. Great times, great memories!
you could make the argument for this being the most stacked final 5 ever. All 5 in the HOF, nearly 100 titles among them (over 20 majors), inflation adjusted combined earnings probably around 10 million dollars. crazy amount of success on this show.
You got that right. Just feels inviting and 'homey' to me. I absolutely worshipped the PBT growing up, and was an avid junior bowler, so watching all these old telecasts reminds me of sitting in our living room as a kid hanging on every shot!
Had the good fortune to receive some instruction by Ernie Schlegel, back in my junior league in the Bronx in the late 70's. He helped me make some corrections in my approach, and my average jumped up by 20 points at the end of the season. Never forgot that.
What a great and that is an understatement final match!! Ernie bowled great. Did you see him have to take a deep breath just before his approach on the last shot? Imagine the pressure. There was nothing like watching these great PBA pros and then right after watching the legendary Jim McKay on WWOS.
The highlight of 1980 PBA National showing Norm Myers losing shot, at 44:25 is a classic example of a “fast 8” leave. The 2 pin flying around the 4 and 7.
There was a Bowler from the Bronx [ Dewey Blair] i am only writing what i heard, Dewey Blair would Bowl Anyone/ Any time/ for Any amount/ Dewey Blair would not even throw practice shots!!! He would throw the ball when the match started and Legend has it that he would string so many strikes, that the match woyld be over sometimes by 8th frame and The game was over before the 10th Frane [ If anyone remembers Dewey Blair, leave a comment/ Ernie was tough in action, but Dewey Blair was Better!!!!!
This was one of the few remaining bowling centers that maintained a lacquer finish on the lanes after most centers had switched to urethane. Lacquer was petroleum-based and flammable while urethane was water-based and nonflammable.
Earl got his clock cleaned by many ( including 18 yr old Norm Duke ). However, it was the consistency that made him great, 40+ wins and 40+ 2nd compressed into 14 yrs. That's less than half the time it took others to attain the same numbers
Right. I mean, when youve made it to the championship match 15,745 times, its gonna seem like you've lost quite a bit....lol. 😉😂. You have to have been in that position alot to accrue those numbers. Count up Tom Bradys championship game and SB defeats...same thing. Anthony and Brady constantly resided in the championship games. Just unbelievable greatness.
Ernie bowled a 700 series here for natl championship finals, with his line he had to pack it in the pocket perfect and its hard to be perfect with everything on the line in last shot.
ahhh Saturdays back in the day.... nothing better! Wide World of Sports, Pro Bowlers Tour, and NCAA College football when college football was truly college football before going pro!
@1:21:27 this is why World Bowling changed their scoring, where it benefits the bowler on their 1st ball, i.e 9 spare is worth 3 pins more than 6 spare. And when the players have the same amount of strikes, they are rewarded for that fact.
So well said. It's painful to admit, but yes the 1st ball count in a 1st frame spare is the one irreconcilable deficiency of classic scoring. Unfortunately World Bowling scoring loses the essential feature of rewarding consecutive strikes, which in my opinion is a far greater deficiency. Perhaps classic scoring should have been augmented by a rule whereby in a 1st frame spare, the player's score at the end is reduced by an amount of 10 less the 1st ball count. So it would "wrap around" so to speak and fix everything.
I loved to watch the Earl Anthony Show. Because I amazed that I saw him in New Orleans But PBA tournament was at the Expressway Lanes in Gretna La. Also, He did not won I was disappointed that hurricane Katrina destroyed the building. It did not rebuilding. Owner did not interesting to rebuilding.
I met Ernie, fall of 66, at LaGuirdia Lanes, Astoria NY..My good friend Larry Festa, and the house "PRO" gene furgeson, shot a money match...Larry did not want to bowl, although he was the best in the howse..Ernie was from the local area, and bowled Lots of action then, Central, Garden City, Roxy in manhattan, and anywhere me and Larry and any time we could both make it... we would be there..Time passed, i went into the Navy, Larry got a pass for his 4F ear thingy, and by the time i got back, he was on tour with Ernie, and Cathy, AND in a station wagon across the country...with their new baby in tow..."tough life to chace your dreams right??" I still keep in touch with him, and my first words are"WHO is HE"Fucking captain midnight"", breaks me up .. Anyway guys and lady's... must put don this keyboard and do what i have done for 60+ years... Get out on the lanes... learn the patterns, and searching out the very BEST, to train you..
Ernie Schlegel comes so close to fouling I cant believe he doesn't. Actually in the 5th frame (1:13:10) it looks like he does foul, though the video quality is so bad and it happens so fast you can't tell. Also he is the most off balance pro bowler I have ever seen. Gotta give him props on that shirt though.
If the lineup had included Jeffrey Lebowski, this tourney would've been perfect. Robe, white russian, and Schenkel saying 'another double for the Dude'
When the PBA was classy. Now guys trash talk to each other, pound their chest, swearing, wearing their pajamas, and conditions setup for easy high games
6:47 all but the 10-pin! Man, I have such a sinking feeling when I leave a 10-pin! It's like total game derailment. Takes me about 5 frames to get over it :0
3:06 Dick Webber stated something about bad bowling.... hugh??? him??? NEVER!!! LMAO!!!!!! even the best of the best had some bad games in the early days. I wonder what he really means by a "bad" game. 230??? ROFL!!!!
Everyone calls ernie the weird one, but Dickinson wipes his nose with his oily towel then licks it. Lol We all got weird tendencies I guess, for years I shook my ass like a stripper just before taking my first step.
when this tournament was bowled there were 11 bowling centers in my city. now there are 2. The same can be said about factories with good paying jobs in the area, same fraction. Meanwhile, in China, i hear there are new bowling centers going up left and right. Coincidence? Go ahead, vote Democrat
factories starting going away in the 1960's. And companies stopped paying employees in the 80's. The greed is good Ronald Reagan years. Worst president in history, ruined this country. Glad he died not knowing he shit his pants.

I love these old bowling shows. A lot of people in the crowd and the bowlers can wear what they want.

This was my favorite day and time of the week... Just hearing the opening music brings back so many memories... Thank you!

Vintage Ernie Schlegel.. the inspiration for Bill Murray's Ernie McCracken character in King Pin.

2019 USBC outlaws Gary Dickinson's method of shooting the 10 pin -- look at his hand (only one finger tip in ball)

When the USA was fun and we weren’t bickering with each other over differences rather than celebrate what we have together.
The commercials are a pleasant surprise
Between Ernie and Weber, I've never seen great players pop up at the line.
