Non-chronological writing is fascinating to me. I'm not a writer, but if I were, I have a feeling that I would mostly write linearly, because I wouldn't trust myself to bring the right momentum or feeling to a scene without the buildup of getting there, you know? I feel Iike I might get excited and write a nonlinear scene, but when I would get to it linearly, I would likely want to change it. 😅 Knowing myself, I'd probably keep the scenes I'm excited for as "treats" to motivate myself to get through the least exciting bits. Otherwise I'd never get it done.
I find that there are certain scenes that require a certain mood...for when I write. I also don't mind starting in the middle or the end because its on my mind and I need it off my mind to focus on anything productive. That's how I as a non-chronological order writer work, but since I got the bulk of what I've written more or less fleshed in,I have now pushed onto a linear path because the chronological order is there.
@@alexpaleale well, I'm a reader, so I watch a lot of booktubers. I love Kat's personality and find her analytical way of approaching writing very interesting. Plus, it's fun to watch people do things I have no talent or inclination for (especially artistic people) :P
"shorter book" "60-70k words" Me: *spits energy drink* ShOrT?! I've been struggling getting enough words together for my novella that has word count goal of 30k, Kat, I envy you!
Looking at all of writing vlogs from Kat, Jesse, and Christine, I realize that I'm really just a mix of all them while writing. I tend to write better while pantsing (Christine), I do outline and tend to want to not chronologically write (Kat), and I tend to make revisions and edits while I'm writing or in the middle of a draft (Jesse).
Whenever I have trouble with my story I always come back to these videos they just remind me what I love about writing and her enthusiasm is practically contagious!
i'm not a writer and the concept of writing half a chapter or like 30 words is so weird to me!! like i find it so difficult how is it even possible? how do you know the beginning of one chapter if you haven't finished the previous one? that's a talent to me because it means you know your book so well and the development that you don't have to wait. I definitely think i would not have been a planer, i don't think i could even separate the chapters..anyway hope you do great with this project and i can't wait to learn what genre it is!!!
Maybe watching this at 12:30 at night wasn’t the best of my ideas because this just motivated me so much to write!!! I already know during my lectures tomorrow I’m so going to be half writing notes and half writing book outline. Can’t wait for the next vlog!!!!! I believe in you!!!!!
nothing has made me this emotional about the act of writing itself in actual months tbh.SO HAPPY TO SEE YOUR EXCITEMENT AND I HOPE YOU KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING ANS LIVE YOUR BEST WRITING LIFE
Whenever I am feeling down about my writing, I come back and watch this video. Her excitement and love for Book always seems to rekindle the romance between me and my writing and I walk away from the video inspired all over again! 😭♥️
I'm SO HAPPY for you Kat. I subscribed to your channel only about 2-3 years ago, and I couldn't join you for your previous writing videos but now I can! YAY ^_^
KAAAAAAAT 😭😂❤ I LOOOOOOVE YOU. I 1000% support you on this journey. I can't wait to hear what this story is about! You're such an amazing influence on the writing community and we love you so much. Keep on keeping on. Let us know if you're sprinting on Twitter cause I'll write with you! 🤗😘
You are so right about how vlogging holds you accountable. I did that this year with my weight loss and it helped SO much. That’s why I’ve decided to do it now with my writing, too! Here’s hoping we both get accomplished what we want!
Seeing you so happy about a project and about writing a new story makes me so happy too! Even if this was a while ago, this is making me insanely motivated to write something. I don't have any set projects right now, but I want to have something. THANK YOU KAT!
Ah omg!!! Seeing you so passionate and happy about a new project makes me so happy and passionate too!! I look forward to the follow up writing vlogs and eventually the book 😘 Also YAAAAAS DAT ACCOUNTABILITY!!!! Teach me your ways!!! Also, those rainbow socks are beautiful and so are you!!! 😁❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
The puzzle is a perfect analogy. I understand people who do chronological order because what happens in the beginning affects what happens later, but sometimes I get a lot of ideas for something that happens later on, and then the trick is to find how we got from point A to point B.
I love seeing other writers’ processes and how they track stats so keep those graphs coming! I will jump ahead to scribble little ideas down here and there, but otherwise I write chronologically, and cannot wrap my head around how anyone can write so non-chronologically! It’s amazing how different people can do the same thing in entirely different ways. Looking forward to more writing vlogs!
I've just started re-writing my own book and DUDE super props to you writing a new book. I'm absolutely terrible at outlining but I feel you on wanting to jump into writing non-chronologically. I love seeing your stats because I've never heard of writing in blocks. The puzzle metaphor actually makes a lot of sense.
I feel you about finally feeling drawn towards a project when you haven't felt that way in a long time :) I'm going through the same thing right now, I was so much into my first two novels 3/4 years ago, and since then I haven't felt that way again, and a week ago I felt it coming back and it's so satisfying!
You go Kat. Run after your dreams. If you want to write a new book, then write a new book. I envy your tenacity. I now started working at PWC and I boy oh boy do I hate it.
I honestly can’t fathom the idea of jumping around to chapters without at least finishing one of them first! Writing chronologically is just the way I think as a writer, but if this method works for you, I encourage you to keep going! I loved this video a lot, by the way. So excited to see you bringing writing videos back to your channel. (I actually first discovered you a few years ago through your nanowrimo and factors of a great novel videos).
I am currently re-watching you as you go through the process of Book and the fact that you are like, "Oh! It'll just be a little book, nothing too long!" and stress that so much and then it turns into two full length books over the course of your writing process is just so funny to me.
Finally catching up on some RUclips and currently binging your writing vlogs!! It’s cool to see how excited you are! And I love seeing this process of writing a story!
So excited for you!!! I’m also having a similar scenario happening in my life right now. I want to be a writer and write stories and books, but always give up and never finish anything. Now, I’ve found a beautiful story that think about and am in the beginning stages of writing!!!
It’s so great to see you so pumped up in a video! And I’m so excited to hear all you have to have about writing in these vlogs and other videos! They inspire me to really set up a plan to work on my writing too :)
I have that problem too. Might be writing chapter 5 and suddenly getting an idea and starting to write chapter 10 🙈 Loved your video, gives me more inspiration to write! ❤
I love that you showed the process of you starting a book, I have been trying to get the courage too and so this really gives me confidence!! Also, I love that your wallpaper is Suga 💕💕💕
Hope your new project will be epic and make you feel the honeymoon for the longest period of time. Push through all those rough patches and come out stronger.
I really love your writing vlogs! I'm really happy for your that your first week went so well! It's really helping me get back into my writing habits. Your other recent writing videos really helped inspire me and push me into buckling down really work on my book and write every day--something I've never been able to make myself do before--and it was so amazing! I got out of the habit because something came up and messed up my daily schedule for over a week and I'm still trying to get back to that. It's hard because I was only doing my new daily routine of getting up early, eating healthier, and writing for a few weeks, but I'm determined! Especially seeing you still in the middle of the struggle with the first draft because it makes me want to see you succeed and then see myself succeed as well! (I say "then" because you'll definitely finish before me because I can't quite write 1000 words a day yet, but I was so close before!) Also, side note, I'm really into K Pop and K Dramas myself and like BTS and this guy I work with recently started listening to their music and came up to talk to me about it one day because he knew I liked K Pop. Within a week of discovering BTS he also changed his phone back ground to one of them--I believe it was also Suga--learned almost all their names, watched tons of videos of them, got his hands on pictures of them from their album that he kept in his phone case, and gotten a TATTOO of the flower from the Love Yourself album. I love that K Pop is spreading!
So happy for you! I can relate so much to this video because I have finally found the story that I want to tell and I love seeing how others organize and maintain a schedule! Looking forward to what comes of your writing!😁
Watching this series has become a great motivation for myself! We started new WIPs at the same time 😂 So, watching you get pumped up, gets me excited too! Your enthusiasm is contagious😊
It is so fun to come back to this video after watching your last one about querying book. Thank you so much for sharing this inspiring journey with us! And all the best for the future of book ♡
I'm a pantser...And a chronological writer. For me though I have later scenes i mind I can't write them before I have what comes before. CAUSE it's like how do I write these characters and situations as they are going to appear in future as the present when I have no idea how they got there. But for you who is an outliner and knows more of less each scene\chapter from beginning to end I can kind of see how you can jump around but I know I will never try. Your enthusiasm is uplifting and keeps me motivated to continue with my draft that is going on 2 years. I can't wait to see more of this project!
so excited for this writing series!! ive been working on a writing project of my own and i love seeing other writers techniques etc. i am sooo intrigued that you write out of order!! i may have to try this!!
Congratulations!! This is so exciting Kat! Part of me is hoping this book is about the two sisters linked by their tattoos after one dies, but any story that has you this excited to write must be great! I can't wait to hear more on your progress! :D
Best of luck. I've been tormented by the same story for years. I've tried starting other projects but this one just needs to be written. I'll not rest in peace until it has been placed on page. Thankfully its evolution is at a stage where it all makes sense. I just need to flesh out the characters.
I don’t know if you’ll see this... but I’m putting this out there. DRAFTING IS THE BEST! And I’m ashamed to admit that I have five complete first drafts (still haven’t been edited or reread). First of all: I'm glad to see you so excited and happy about this new project, so you go girl!! 👏🏼👏🏼 Second: I'm gonna need that Yoongi wallpaper 'cause 😍😍😍
Keep at it! I wish I was further along in drafting my book, but I can't figure out an inciting incident to kick things off. Can't wait to see more videos of your progress. So, as I said before, keep at it. You'll do great.
I don't have any story ideas at the moment (nor am I a writer) but seeing you so driven honestly makes me want to start something as well :D it's catching!!
kat, you look so freaking cute, especially with the small pigtails!!!!!! also i so admire your outlining skills. i cannot plan out my stories for the life of me
I’ve never understood non-chronological writing but after your puzzle analogy I totally get it. I’ve done quite a few 1000 piece puzzles and now I’m writing a book and I _totally get_ how those two things are analogous. You can’t just stick in one place in a big puzzle! It’s impossible. And I know I get inspiration for later parts of my story as I write it as well. Personally though, I just assume based on the kind of person I am that _my_ inspiration for things that are really far off, is probably just trashy wish fulfillment and won’t be viable by the time I actually get there. Lol.
YESSS girl I just started a new WIP too!!!!!!!! You have higher goals than I do ha, but I still feel burnt out from my last project. Hopefully soon I can ramp it up ;) Love this!
CONGRATS on starting a new book!! i hope this honeymoon stage lasts as long as possible 💜 but even if it fades, you gotta keep pushing!

I feel like working within the blocks but allowing yourself to jump around is SO smart-I always struggle with motivation in the middle!
Just swinging by to say I believe in you, and that you’re a writing force to behold. You’ve got this.
Yeah for weekly writing vlogs, what good news to start the day.
