Peter Tagtren is always left out when it comes to death metal vocalist. He has the widest range of any singer I have ever heard and his growls are the most guttural I've ever heard. This list has some great singers but as far as death metal, Peter is hands down the best.
Crazy how underrated swallow the sun is bc the singer mikko kotamäki is probably one of the all around best metal singers. Screams, growls, clean vocals. Dude is insane.
Randy Blythe is #1 for me that guy is just insane and his voice is so distinct you can always tell it's him. I feel like Lamb of God cannot ever put out a bad song, they are all awesome!
I'll only do a top 3. The greatest growl I've ever heard is by Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom - a veteran band that unfortunately far too few people know. His low tone and volume are amazing and he has the clearest enunciation of any Death metal vocalist I've ever heard. Second and third place, frequently shifting around depending on my mood, are taken by Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt and Amorphis' Tomi Joutsen.
11 actual 'Death Metal' vocalists Joe from Broken Hope Luc from Gorguts Brett from Malevolent Creation Chris from Cannibal Corpse John from Obituary Glen from Deicide Will from Mortician Frank from Suffocation George from Cannibal Corpse Oli from Archspire Phlegeton from Wormed
Spot on with Chuck Billy. He had an iconic 80s thrash voice but was shocked to hear him morph into having one of the most powerful death metal vocal tones. He sounds so full and makes it seem effortless
She mentioned the ten vocalist I also admire too and yet there are bunch of other metal vocalists that are superb. I like when she said Nergal " The Nerg" , she made it sound awesome. That's a great hook of a nickname.
I don't think there's a single short clip you can play of Opeth's music that will do Mikael's voice justice. The demonic power he gives off is stunning. And his clean voice is amazing too, as Alissa said.
as i am scroling through the comments ... the lack of travis ryan is disturbing !! how in the frozen hell can he not be in everybodys top5 is beyond be tbh there is no one near him atm in that genre
2 months late.. but in no particular order - Martin Van Drunen | Asphyx - Karl Willets | Bolt Thrower - George Fisher | Cannibal Corpse - John Tardy | Obituary - Marc Grewe | Morgoth - Sauron | Decapitated - Johan Hegg | Amon Amarth - Chuck Schuldiner | Death - LG Petrov | Entombed - Will Ramos | Lorna Shore (yeah I know it's technically deathcore but close enough)
A vocalist I absolutely love is Seiki Kakuzaki from Intestine Baalism, his voice is suuuuper deep and also very booming, it is one of the most animalistic sounds I’ve heard and it establishes a presence in their music
For me Peter Tägtgren from hypocrisy is the best melodic death metal vocalist, and then David Vincent ex morbid angel’s vocalist, and number 3 George fisher from cannibal corpse.
Devin is just a master of all. Chuck Schuldiner, for obvious reasons of greatness and Jeff Walker from Carcass. Instantly recognisable and his voice is just fun to listen to.
My favorites are Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom because I love his voice and how it fits with the music they're playing and Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under because I can't stop listening to his extremely low, brutal guttaral vocal style
@@docphantom2224: There was an article I read about how Black Dahlia Murder was going to continue touring and making music after losing Trevor Strnad as their frontman. Because they went out of their way to mention modern bands, who aren't even famous, who decided to quit after losing their frontman but they don't even mention Bodom After Midnight...
Alexi's voice was on fire back in 99! As a Bodom fan you HAVE TO listen to the "Tokyo Warhearts" live album! He never came close to his voice afterwards
Should have title the video “favorite metal vocalists” to be fair. She clearly doesn’t even know 11 death metal vocalists, or she would have stuck to the premise.
I agree. It's obvious that she's well versed with the general singers in the metal community, mentioning a wide array of groups/singers, but it just seems that she doesn't know enough death metal singers to make a list. That said, it almost seems like she onlymentions groups/singers she's familiar with....
Ok first off this list……not bad. Some great choices but they’re not all Death Metal vocalists. So my top 11 DEATH metal vocalists are (In no particular order): 1. Barney- Napalm Death 2. Jeff Walker- carcass 3. Ola Lindgren/Jörgen Sandström- Grave 4. Tomas Lindberg- At The Gates 5. Mikael Åkerfeldt- Bloodbath 6. David Vincent- Morbid Angel 7. Phil Bozeman- Whitechapel 8. Bjorn Strid- Soilwork 9. Marco Aro- The Haunted 10. Dallas Toler Wade - Nile 11. Frank Mullen- Suffocation I know there are a ton more but those are my top 11
my personal favourites are phil anselmo and max cavalera, i started growling/screaming with slaugthered from pantera, i mastered it from scratch on a month
what do you expect from a list of " the greatest deathmetal vocalists " that starts with a woman . i have no problem with woman doing extreme vocals , it's just that men are on a different level , the way men perform the lows and highs is something i never yet got to see a woman does .
Yeah thats what i thought considering the title says “Death Metal”, but apparently…..its more Metal…..which i’m fine with, cuz i like it all…..just misleading.
David Vincent, Corpsegrinder, Chuck, Tardy, Benton, LG Petrov, Tomas Lindberg, Björn Strid, Bret Hoffmann and many others. The only woman that I would put in a 'best death metal vocalists' list is Simone Pluijmers
jesus fuck you kids bore me. Godflesh would be number one, Dead World, Skrew (members of Nin and Zombie), and Crawl. THAT is industrial metal, not some goth shit.
Max Cavalera, John Tardy, Chuck Schuldiner, L.G. Petrov, Jeff Walker, David Vincent, Johnny Hellund, Burton C. Bell, Marc Grewe, Barney Greenway, Dave Ingram, Karl from Bolt Thrower
Some candidates of mine, some based on particular points in time of certain studio releases Helmuth Lehner since 2014 John Tardy 1989-92 Chris Reifert David Vincent 1989 Steve Tucker 1998-2000 Chuck Schuldiner 1987-8 Mark Barney Greenway Glen Benton 1990 Nergal

Dave Ingram (Benediction/Echelon), Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower/Memoriam), LG Petrov RIP 🪦 (Entombed), Matti Karki (Dismember), Chris Barnes (SFU/Cannibal), Tucker (Morbid Angel) etc
My top 5 death metal vocalists would be as follows: 5: Joe Duplantier (Gojira) 4. George Fisher (Cannibal Corpse) 3. Chuck Schuldiner (Death) 2. Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) 1. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
Effing great list. Trevor is my number 1. Trevors highs, especially in nocturnal, are unreal. Sounds like his vocal cords should've just been shredded. I met him a few times at dirty club shows (my favorite, the Mohawk place shows in Buffalo were legendary) and he was extremely freindly, cool and down to earth. Sat with me and my bro at the bar and just shot the shit about metal.
I can agree on all of them, but u missed Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. I mean he isn’t singing death metal, but man, he is insane! He has the most brutal gutteral I’ve ever herd, amazing highs and pig squeals, and still could be an good pop singer with his clear voice lmfao… I mean, listen to a few Lorna shores and after this listen to will‘s cover of sleep token. This is insane
Gotta go with Chris Barnes from CC, Nillo from Insomnium, whoever does them for Mortician, guy from Dark Tranquillity, Tatiana from Jinjer (I know, not death metal, but still impressive), Steve Tucker from Morbid Angel is good too
Mitch lucker was not that great lol really good vocalist but I would not put him on the list of greatest extreme vocalists ever. I would like 12 years ago when I got into this type of music and never really heard any other vocalists before. Then I got into slam and underground death metal in general.
I would have to say Tatiana - Jinjer and Chad - Terror Universal - Best in my world. I like a lot of the mentioned folks here in this video.... Randy, Chuck, and Joe especially. Tatiana's vocals are the most beautiful, brutal and natural I have ever heard. I am 56 and been listening to metal since 1975. Now, Terror Universal has been labeled a Slipknot ripoff....but oh they are so much better at song writing. Make Them Bleed is in my Top 5 Metal albums ALL TIME. Love Slipknot's legendary live show. I have seen it many times...always good. I have not seen TU live. I highly doubt it's as good as SK but the writing and composition is magical to me. METAL 4EVER!
He might not have reached GOAT status yet, but Lorna Shore's Will Ramos is incredible too. Sounds just like the studio live, and the range and emotion he brings with him is incredible.
Good picks I personally agree with alot of them. My personal fav metal vocalists are Corey Taylor, Howard Jones, Tim from as I lay dying (I don't know how to spell his last name) Chino Moreno and Cory Brandon Putman from Norma jean.
Attila Chisar from Mayhem and Sunno))) He has insane range and is just a fantastic vocalist. In the whole extreme metal he is one of my top favourite by far.
My personal favorite is Chuck Schuldiner. I think he is underrated as a vocalist. I just love the way he delivers his lyrics; most of the time i don't have to look up death lyrics because he sings them in a very decipherable way, despite the nature of death metal vocals being otherwise.

@@raimondsliepins4622 Listen to Bloodbath when Mikael was with them. His vocal is superb
1- Scott Reigel
2- Karl Willetts
3- Jan Chris de Koeijar
4- L.G Petrov
5 - Martin van Drunen
6- Karyn crisis
7- Dave Gregor
8- Corpsegrinder
9- John Tardy
10- Johan Hegg
11- Chuck....Chuck is probably in my top 5 actually!
Impeccable taste
@@deathmetaldownhiller7874 thanks...cheers 🍻

Scott Reigal, excellent pick. Brutality are my faves.
I forgot probably the greatest Ross Dolan
Peter Tagtren is always left out when it comes to death metal vocalist. He has the widest range of any singer I have ever heard and his growls are the most guttural I've ever heard. This list has some great singers but as far as death metal, Peter is hands down the best.
meh
1st 2 Hypocrisy albums ARE, GREAT 🤘 Everything AFTER that though? (boring AF) JMO of course... Peter's a great music producer obviously too.
I feel like Lamb of God cannot ever put out a bad song, they are all awesome!
randy is the king!
Absolutely!
he's not even death metal
Randy sounds like Yoda. I can't take him seriously. Also groove metal suuuuuucks.
@@beastrace81 then what is he? Blackmetal
I loved that she mentioned Angela. I haven't seen Arch Enemy, since Alissa became the singer. I really should.
see at BLACK METAL TEENS HEARING PINK FLOYD
I'll only do a top 3. The greatest growl I've ever heard is by Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom - a veteran band that unfortunately far too few people know. His low tone and volume are amazing and he has the clearest enunciation of any Death metal vocalist I've ever heard. Second and third place, frequently shifting around depending on my mood, are taken by Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt and Amorphis' Tomi Joutsen.
Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity)
😍😍😍
Respect. Love that she showed love to Philip H, and Chuck Billy.
Man Trevor was the best. Loved his range and his lyrics. I will forever miss that dude. RIP
Chuck Schuldiner
Phil Anselmo
John Tardy
Mikael Åkerfeldt
Nice, list of death metal vocalists that are not death metal vocalists
Yea but they use the same growls. that's enough.
Devin Townsend on Strapping Young Lad City album is the absolute benchmark for everything metal!
Devin Townsend is great .
Heavy Devy on the New Black and the cover of Zodiac from the Melvins was amazing.
City album is my go to for a straight up cathartic release of “hate the world” energy haha. Masterpiece from start to finish 👌🏻.
Phil is badass in Scour as well as Pantera. They are more extreme obviously
John Gallagher is my favorite DM vocalist
Scour is a fucking joke 🤣 can't be serious about it mate.😅😅
Scour are good, from what I've heard they would land more on the black metal side than death though
i Love that she included the great Chuck Billy x
Pure Death Metal Vocals
Angela Gossow 🔥🖤🤘
11 actual 'Death Metal' vocalists
Joe from Broken Hope
Luc from Gorguts
Brett from Malevolent Creation
Chris from Cannibal Corpse
John from Obituary
Glen from Deicide
Will from Mortician
Frank from Suffocation
George from Cannibal Corpse
Oli from Archspire
Phlegeton from Wormed
And if you call them out because they praise generic garbage, youre called an "elitest" as if thats supposed to be an insult
Thanks for this actual list I would have liked to have heard expanded on lol
Glenn Benton
Spot on with Chuck Billy. He had an iconic 80s thrash voice but was shocked to hear him morph into having one of the most powerful death metal vocal tones. He sounds so full and makes it seem effortless
She mentioned the ten vocalist I also admire too and yet there are bunch of other metal vocalists that are superb. I like when she said Nergal " The Nerg" , she made it sound awesome. That's a great hook of a nickname.
…ig she doesn’t listen to death metal? 🤷🏻♂️
I don't think there's a single short clip you can play of Opeth's music that will do Mikael's voice justice. The demonic power he gives off is stunning. And his clean voice is amazing too, as Alissa said.
mine are
1: Travis Ryan
2: George Corpsegrinder Fisher
3: John Gallagher
4: Chuck Schuldiner
5: Mikael Åkerfeldt
6: Joe Duplantier
as i am scroling through the comments ...
the lack of travis ryan is disturbing !!
how in the frozen hell can he not be in everybodys top5 is beyond be tbh

Hey everybody, so here's my list of my 11 Favourite Apples but I'm gonna bend the rules a bit, so here goes. My #1 Apple is an Orange.
My number 1 apple is a dog
precisely what happened here. this list makes absolutely no sense. Devin?? really????
I got to #4 and begun to wonder if she knows what death metal is....
2 months late.. but in no particular order
- Martin Van Drunen | Asphyx
- Karl Willets | Bolt Thrower
- George Fisher | Cannibal Corpse
- John Tardy | Obituary
- Marc Grewe | Morgoth
- Sauron | Decapitated
- Johan Hegg | Amon Amarth
- Chuck Schuldiner | Death
- LG Petrov | Entombed
- Will Ramos | Lorna Shore (yeah I know it's technically deathcore but close enough)
A vocalist I absolutely love is Seiki Kakuzaki from Intestine Baalism, his voice is suuuuper deep and also very booming, it is one of the most animalistic sounds I’ve heard and it establishes a presence in their music
Finally someone in this comment section with some sense and a decent knowledge of the genre
Besides Chuck Tardy from Obituary is a major beast as well ( both of them inspired Angela Gossow)
Thanks for mentioning an actual death metal vocalist lol Intestine Baalism is insanely underrated.
Finally someone with good taste
For me Peter Tägtgren from hypocrisy is the best melodic death metal vocalist, and then David Vincent ex morbid angel’s vocalist, and number 3 George fisher from cannibal corpse.
YES!! Randy is so fucking underrated, great to hear some love for him. LoG is my favourite band of all time.
Devin is just a master of all. Chuck Schuldiner, for obvious reasons of greatness and Jeff Walker from Carcass. Instantly recognisable and his voice is just fun to listen to.
Wouldn't be surprised if she listed Dio or Lemmy at this point
🤣🤣
So only a few actual Death Metal Vocalists… gotcha👌
My favorites are Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom because I love his voice and how it fits with the music they're playing and Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under because I can't stop listening to his extremely low, brutal guttaral vocal style
Alexi gets no love for his vocals and Bodom is always overlooked. It's just a damn shame.
@@Charles_Anthony true i never hear anybody talk about children of bodom even though they are just as famous as other bands
@@docphantom2224: There was an article I read about how Black Dahlia Murder was going to continue touring and making music after losing Trevor Strnad as their frontman. Interesting news and it would have been a great article if they never mentioned other bands who weren't able to continue after losing their frontman. Why, I hear you ask? Because they went out of their way to mention modern bands, who aren't even famous, who decided to quit after losing their frontman but they don't even mention Bodom After Midnight...
Alexi's voice was on fire back in 99! As a Bodom fan you HAVE TO listen to the "Tokyo Warhearts" live album! He never came close to his voice afterwards
@@freshzinnoh, i havent listened to tokio warhearts yet, only stockholm knockout. But ill check it out
The list now would be 1)Will Ramos LornaShore... 2)Alex Terrible SlaughterToprevail....3)Tatiana of Jinjer
So my top 11 DEATH metal vocalists are (In no particular order):
1. Barney- Napalm Death
2. Jeff Walker- carcass
3. Ola Lindgren/Jörgen Sandström- Grave
4. Tomas Lindberg- At The Gates
5. Mikael Åkerfeldt- Bloodbath
6. David Vincent- Morbid Angel
7. Phil Bozeman- Whitechapel
8. Bjorn Strid- Soilwork
9. Marco Aro- The Haunted
10. Dallas Toler Wade - Nile
11. Frank Mullen- Suffocation
I know there are a ton more but those are my top 11
Barney is amazing…the whole band is amazing really…decades of excellent extreme music
Devin is the best. His vocals on Deadhead (live) are on a different level.
my personal favourites are phil anselmo and max cavalera, i started growling/screaming with slaugthered from pantera, i mastered it from scratch on a month
Matti Way, hands down my favorite Death Metal vocalist. Gave Abominable Putridity so much guttural life!
Great list! Love that most are my favorite metal vocalists regardless of the style
How the hell does a list like this exist without including George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, Frank Mullen and Martin Van Drunen? Mind-boggling.
Because tastes are different
Because she is not you, it's that simple
what do you expect from a list of " the greatest deathmetal vocalists " that starts with a woman .
i have no problem with woman doing extreme vocals , it's just that men are on a different level , the way men perform the lows and highs is something i never yet got to see a woman does .
Yeah thats what i thought considering the title says “Death Metal”, but apparently…..its more Metal…..which i’m fine with, cuz i like it all…..just misleading.
Because its not a death metal list the title is misleading
You forgot Max Cavalera, come on Sepultura, soulfly, Cavelera conspiracy. The dude is a super heavy weight. Got to include him
Why not just call it her favourite metal singers?
David Vincent, Corpsegrinder, Chuck, Tardy, Benton, LG Petrov, Tomas Lindberg, Björn Strid, Bret Hoffmann and many others. The only woman that I would put in a 'best death metal vocalists' list is Simone Pluijmers
Would love to see a industrial metal list :) Fear Factory would be somewhere on my list.
+ oomph, ministry, rammstein
fear factory. ministry. sybreed. marilyn manson.
jesus fuck you kids bore me. Godflesh would be number one, Dead World, Skrew (members of Nin and Zombie), and Crawl. THAT is industrial metal, not some goth shit.
Godflesh!
Max Cavalera, John Tardy, Chuck Schuldiner, L.G. Petrov, Jeff Walker, David Vincent, Johnny Hellund, Burton C. Bell, Marc Grewe, Barney Greenway, Dave Ingram, Karl from Bolt Thrower
My pick would be Riley McShane from Allegaeon.
My favorite vocalist is Paul McCartney, he is criminally the most underated grindcore vocalist!
Who was number 12 Taylor Swift? 🙄
Some candidates of mine, some based on particular points in time of certain studio releases
Helmuth Lehner since 2014
John Tardy 1989-92
Chris Reifert
David Vincent 1989
Steve Tucker 1998-2000
Chuck Schuldiner 1987-8
Mark Barney Greenway
Glen Benton 1990
Nergal

4. George Fisher (Cannibal Corpse)
3. Chuck Schuldiner (Death)
2. Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom)
1. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
I was at that show in Toronto few months ago 😍 so amazing with napalm death and behemoth
Simon Olsen from Danish band Baest is an amazing singer. His growls are so amazing.
That's a great list! Would love to have more of this with others singers :)
Devin is in a league of his own
Gotta go with Chris Barnes from CC, Nillo from Insomnium, whoever does them for Mortician, guy from Dark Tranquillity, Tatiana from Jinjer (I know, not death metal, but still impressive), Steve Tucker from Morbid Angel is good too
I’d DEFINITELY add Mitch Lucker and Will Ramos in mine. Great list tho!! I absolutely love all of them!
Not death metal infact none of this list is except Trevor from BDM rip
I agree!
Mitch lucker was not that great lol really good vocalist but I would not put him on the list of greatest extreme vocalists ever. I would like 12 years ago when I got into this type of music and never really heard any other vocalists before. Then I got into slam and underground death metal in general.
@@krusenator123 i would in mine ;)

I mean, I'll name my favorite pop singers and put Jens Kidman on my list. Will I make sense? no. But neither she did. So whatever.
Mikael Åkerfeldt, Peter Tägtgren, Aaron Stainthorpe, Thomas A.G. Jensen, Dan Swanö, Mikael Stanne, Nergal, Darren White, Nick Holmes,
I would have to say Tatiana - Jinjer and Chad - Terror Universal - Best in my world.
Anders Friden from In Flames is who got me into screaming. Probably my favorite scream.
Chuck Schuldiner: Am I Joke To You?
Jeff Walker, Dan Swano, LG Petrov
He might not have reached GOAT status yet, but Lorna Shore's Will Ramos is incredible too. Sounds just like the studio live, and the range and emotion he brings with him is incredible.
Lorna Shore is deathcore. Ramos doesn't belong in the discussion.
Good picks I personally agree with alot of them. My personal fav metal vocalists are Corey Taylor, Howard Jones, Tim from as I lay dying (I don't know how to spell his last name) Chino Moreno and Cory Brandon Putman from Norma jean.
Would've been better titled "favorite extreme metal vocalists". Not much death metal here
Attila Chisar from Mayhem and Sunno))) He has insane range and is just a fantastic vocalist. In the whole extreme metal he is one of my top favourite by far.
