My wife and I have had our Decathlon jackets for a couple of years. 100% worth it. We have had several other jackets, none of them lasted. Decathlon jackets are not the lightest but, they are solid and warm.
I bought the Decathlon, on your recommendation, before I hiked the Alum Cave Trail up to Mt. Le Conte, and Mrytle Point. Boy am I glad. It was forty degrees up there with high winds. That Decathlon puffer was a life saver. Thanks for your help, Dan. Happy Thanksgiving.
I bought the Decathlon jacket over the summer on your recommendation and I think for the money I could use that other $300 on some other great hiking gear. I understand the Decathlon is 5-6 oz. heavier, but I'm willing to carry that weight for something I'll only use part of the year vs something like a backpack or tent I can use all year long. Compared to other puffy jackets for the hiking use case, and for the money it's hard to beat the Decathlon... I'll keep it.
Hey Dan, take a look at the Mont-Bell EX Light Down Anorak. Full featured with adjustable hood, elastic cuffs, waist he, pocket for hands. 3 oz of 900 goose down fill @ 7.6 oz. Regular price $399, bought sale for $263. In future, suggest you mention the fill weight when comparing jackets.
Senchi designs Polartech Alpha 60/90/120 hoodies are worth looking at. Yes you need to wear it with a shell when it's windy but they are very good warmth to weight
And also much beater with moisture. They are pretty much breathable due to underlying mesh structure and dry almost instantly. No problems with losing all warmth when wet compared to down. Alpha 60 hoodie and leggings have become my go to for active hiking warmth.
Very funny coincidence. I bought the MT100 3 days ago. In Europe, the hooded version goes around 70€ and the non-hooded around 50€. Even though it is only 15D fabric, it feels more durable than you would expect from it at that price point. It even has YKK zippers. Check it out highly recommendable. Weighs around 280 g PS. I'm not kidding, cut off ridicules the Tags. They alone weigh 6g
Down jackets are really only useful when you are static. Most are too warm to use as an active layer and become useless when wet either from weather or sweat. Enlightened Equipment’s synthetic Torrid pullover is the answer. A medium weighs around 8.5oz but you can use it as an active layer and for static use. I no longer bring along a fleece or Alpha Direct garment. Just the Torrid and a rain jacket so I’ve saved weight by bringing less clothes. The Torrid has been great for 3 season use and it still works when wet.
As do I. I had problems with black diamond quality around the year 2000 or so . I stopped purchasing their products. There are just too many options...such as montbell.
If I ever get around to buying another down puffy, I'll get the Decathlon. Thanks for throwing some shots of our trip in the video! Happy Thanksgiving!
Did you try the zipper again after putting the jacket on? From the video clip of it catching while you’re wearing it, I wonder if it’s getting caught because there’s tension on the jacket along the upper part of the zipper. It looks a tad snug there. I think the zipper is having trouble overcoming the tension.
This is right on time for me, just in the last couple of days I'm looking to find a lightweight jacket I can wear to work (and sometimes I walk) and stuff it down in a stuff sack because I have nowhere to put my things there. Thank you!! This would be good for everything, being in a cold house, hiking, everything.
Looks like a good option for a pullover style hoodie. Personally, I don't like pullover style hoodies for a puffy. I like pullover alpha midlayer hoodie. Puffy I really like just a full zip no-hood jacket just for sitting around camp in mostly. I VERY VERY rarely bust out the puffy layer while actually hiking, because it is overkill when you are moving with your body heat in my experience. Also, don't want to get it wet, so it mainly stays in my pack until camp on mostly all of my trips. In the rare case you would want to wear the puffy actively, the pullover is a PITA, and the hood is annoying to me. This is usually in really cold weather when I stop for a break or for lunch or dinner and I just want to quickly throw on another layer to keep core temp up. A full zip regular jacket seems to work much better for that to quickly throw on and take off.
If you’ve never tried one on, throw on a Rab puffy. My apologies in advance. You’ll change out every puffy you own. The mythic alpine fits this category, within a couple oz. Fully featured. If you’re looking to feel like you just zipped yourself into Ativan try the positron.
I actually bought some weeks ago the MT500F Feather for 45€ with the deal and some coupons. For the amount of warmth it provides (-5 when moving) and its size its just unbeatable
Thanks for sharing new products. I always enjoy new products and your thoughts on them. There is always a better product.....have a look at the Montbell Plasma 1000 Jacket. 4.9 OZ, Full zip, 2 pockets with 7-denier Ballistic Airlight nylon ripstop outer. Unfortunately it comes at an even higher price but is serving me well for almost 2 years now. It has no hood but I like it that way.
I have super mixed feelings on down jackets. They suck unless you're not moving. If I move, I sweat, and I living in a rainy state, so it's not useful outside most of the year. I do own a GW for my backpacking kit, but I find I like my alpaca fleece more. I know synthetic has no rain or moisture issues, so when I need to replace it, I'm leaning in that direction.
Dan: How would you compare the WARMTH of this jacket to the other's mentioned in your review, and also to the Mobell Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Parka. Also, I thought you loved that jacket, so was wondering why its not mentioned in this video. Thanks for yet another interesting and well done vid!
The Montbell is a much warmer jacket! I didn’t include it because it was not as similar to this one. The montbell is much loftier and can go in much cooler weather in my opinion. It’s just extremely expensive.
@@DanBecker Thanks. Yes, Montbell is expensive. I cursed you as I pushed the buy button after watching your review back then! ;-) But I have long since forgiven you, and have no regrets. For 3-season camping in NH I carry a puffy to be my warmest layer, just in case needed, and I think the Montbell's level of warmth suits that role well. I'm not sure what role the Black Diamond Deploy Hoodie would play, as it seems too light to cover possible cold conditions, but too warm for a normal mid layer. Maybe you could do a video on how you'd work this into an overall layering system to cover varying ranges of expected temps. Thanks again!
We need some kind of warmth per oz metric. I sold my UL puffy jacket as it was never warm enough when I needed it. Now I carry one that is 3oz heavier but MUCH warmer especially if it is windy.
People that are just starting out in backpacking would be crazy not to get your program it makes it simple to get started and save you a lot of money I wish I had something like that when I started backpacking I think Dan did a great job on this
4d nylon is tissue paper. this thing will rip wide open on literally anything. its great for people setting records that just need a literal sleeping eating jacket but it is not meant to be used even in a pinch for activity
On fill power.... it doesn't tell you much about how warm the jacket will be. It tells you how much insulation you are getting PER OUNCE of down. But a 700 jacket can easily be as warm or even warmer than an 800, 900, or even 1000 fill power jacket, depending on how much insulation there is and how the jacket is contructed. If the baffles are sewn all the way through, you'll lose heat at every seam. If the cuffs, or neck, or waist can't seal well to the body and let air out or in, you'll lose heat. The ONLY thing fill power tells you is how LIGHT the jacket is likely to be compared to another jacket with the same amount of down.... except even that is complicated by contruction. Zippers have a weight penalty, as do pockets, snaps, shock cord (bungee drawcords), etc. Don't be overly impressed by a fill power number. Try the jacket. Check independent reviews. Do the research. A good puffy jacket is not cheap and it's worth putting in some time to make sure you are getting your money's worth and aren't overpaying for performance that just isn't there.
For all these reasons, I'd still say go with the Ghost Whisperer if you are looking for something like this. only 1.5 oz difference, and the GW has been the hands down best performer best rated down puffy after YEARS of user reviews. It's SUPER well tested and is considered the best warmth to weight ratio jacket, but is also WELL KNOWN to be durable enough to handle reasonable backpacking.
Black Diamond Deploy Hoody isn’t really new but that and the Rab Mythic G are both my favorite ultralight jackets/hoodies. They are really warm. I would pair it with Rab Vital windbreaker or Black Diamond Distance windbreaker.
It is an anorak, not a jacket. Anorak is an Inuit word. Anoraks pull over your head, jackets can fully unzip or unbutton. By losing half the front zipper, and all the strings, they made it lighter. And since it isn't knit, we can't call it a sweater.
The ghost whisperer 2 is highly overrated for warmth. I relied on internet discussion to take that into 40-45F weather and froze my @ss off. Now I thoroughly test gear myself prior to risking my life on it.
The price is high but find a 200g Jacket (mine is exact 200g cause do not want a hood) for less which you can take lower? I use mine without a midlayer down to 45F. At nearly £400... Black Diamond are smoking crack. Stunts like that are the kind of thing that makes me instantly disregard them completely. Even if they had a product that was good value I simply refuse to support a company that is happy to rip customers off... 1000FP down or not! A 4D ripstop nylon....I hope the wind doesn't tear it. Thanks for finding that light of a jacket, but I won't be spending that much on the jacket. FYI for black Friday the Decathlon MT100 is only $70
1000 fill is less moisture/oil/dirt resistant than 800 fill. The higher the fill power, the less resistant. They use low fill power on Everest for this reason.
