    the blacks didn't dry as dark as I wanted. First time painting with oils, I would do some things differently if I did this painting again but the oil paints were pretty dope. just a bit thicc and unruly

    When I was in high school (a year or 25 ago), I used to torment my art teacher by somehow working some dark theme into every assignment, just because I knew it unnerved her. Our last assignment of the year was to draw or paint our version of Utopia. Then she looked at me and said, "Okay, Tim. Let's see you turn this into something morbid!". Challenge accepted. So I drew a city, complete with a highway sign that read, " Utopia: A Nice Place To Live". And then proceeded to draw buildings on fire, planes dropping bombs, a mushroom cloud in the background, and bodies impaled on spikes, among other emblems of serenity. In the end, I put a lot of work into it and it was actually pretty decent. As much as it pained my art teacher, she gave me an A. After all, I had done exactly what she asked.

      I really enjoy your paintings though, in all seriousness. I can draw a little (the dragon in my thumbnail pic is mine), but I can't paint to save my life, so I'm a great admirer of those who can. Looking forward to your next creation :-)

      You joke, but every time I've seen that man paint a man-made object the story he comes up with is DARK. "And here's a nice little cabin, maybe hunting cabin. And maybe it's looking a little run down. Perhaps the owner one day was checking his traps and drowned in the lake over here." And over here is a happy little tree...

    I am NO artist, but i've seen enough Bob Ross episodes to know if you wanted a black canvas, you should've started with black jesso and let it dry. This would allow other colors to show up on top of it. Also looks like you're using a dry canvas-- Bob always started with a liquid clear or liquid white primed canvas. He would talk about the struggles of using a dry canvas-- now i know what he meant! I dig the ASMR aspect though.

    Would you definitely recommend oils over acrylics?
    I like water-based acrylics because, overall, they're highly non-toxic. You start working with oils and eventually you're going to run into petroleum distillates. (Yada yada cancer in the State of California, and all that.)
    But acrylics can be VERY difficult to work with; and it's really tough to achieve Bob Ross-levels of realism.

    • @TaylorASMR
      @TaylorASMR  5 лет назад +4

      Chiron of Pelion this was my first painting I have done with oils so I don’t have enough experience with them to choose one over the other, but I think I might like acrylics more. Unless you need more drying time and then I would recommend oils

    • @claireevans7929
      @claireevans7929 5 лет назад

      I like to work with acrylics and if ur having trouble with realism I would try the brand ARTEZA because they are not as flat and dull as other brands of acrylic, I prefer the glossy type as well

    40:31 thanks for the close-up: only here I started to get the 3D-effect of the details in the buildings, and that the scratches at the ground-level actually delineated the ground, making the rest of the buildings have a reflection on the ground, as if the ground was covered in liquid. And a little later my heart broke when you closed that fiery gap. - I so wished you had let that alleyway into the fire open, as a kind of “Fluchtpunkt” (- what’s the english word for the point in a painting where all the perspectives are leading to in the distance?) - Also: thinking how Australia burned this year, while this painting is from 2018 and actually has rain-sounds in the background gave me an eerie feeling...

    I'm sure someone already offered this tip but in case no one has.... oil paintings do dry a lot slower than acrylics. It can take few days to dry which is why oil paints are fantastic for blending your colors on the canvas. There's a nice little medium you can mix with your oil paints to speed up the drying time and allow you to come back and add more layers and glazing to your painting. It takes about a day to dry up your oil paint and not have the colors blend and muck up and you get some ugly brown and grey combinations. It also helps to thin out your paint too and not make the oil paints so thick when you are trying to work with thinner paint. I use Winsor and Newtons Liquin: www.winsornewton.com/na/shop/oils-mediums-varnishes-and-solvents/oil-colour/mediums/liquin-original-2-53-us-fl-oz-75ml-bottle-3221751 You don't need a whole lot. If you use a lot your oil paints are so thin and the more you try to paint on the more you take off. So for a painting session I generally pour out a dollop the size of a quarter and mix just a bit to a little bit of the oil paint. If I need it to be more thinner then I mix a bit more. In a three hour painting session I don't usually end up using it all. So a little goes a long way. If I haven't finished my painting and come back to it another day I also lay a thin layer of the Liquin over what I've painted. It makes the new paint you're layering on top to go on smoother. I'm by NO MEANS ANY EXPERT, I'm a novice and I've picked up a few things along the way and on and off again take painting classes at an art center that's open to public for classes. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy your painting ASMR videos. The sounds of painting are so soothing and I like to see what you create. You dive in and create, and I lack that in me. I'm always over thinking and instead of just painting I spend more time planning out what I want to paint and hence, don't do enough painting. Okay, enough of my "book length" comment. Happy painting!
